My wrestling hot take: the need to explain to others why you do or don't like wrestler X, a certain style, whatever promotion, et cetera, is absolutely ridiculous.

Bobby Heenan was an overrated announcer. The partisan heel schtick was lame even as a kid, and while not as overtly gross as Lawler or Zbyszko, he had plenty of racist/sexist jokes that are cringe-inducing on re-watch. I'd even argue that while Lawler was overall worse, he could sell a big angle/moment a lot better. Heenan's best work was the early NWO era that forced him into being more of a tweener and Dusty being so wild that he had to be the straight man at times. I'm not really sure what he brought to the table except early childhood memories.

Bobby Heenan thought a lot of himself and seemed to be able to dish it out fine but struggle taking it. I mean I think only 1 person ever got their feelings hurt over Tony freaking Schiavone, especially back then. His books were trash.

But overrated he was not. Personal stuff aside he was a GOAT heel announcer and he was what made the 1992 Royal Rumble great. Not that it wasn’t already good, but he made it great because he was great.

But then we wouldn’t have a message board!  🤣. I do see your point, though!

To me it almost feels like FTR is afraid to show too much personality. There are times when they seem to really be having fun, then they remember that "oh wait. This is serious business." Then they cycle back into their pretentious tag spots and formulaic matches. I like when they show some personality with the Outrunners, or when they can brawl a little more like the S&O rivalry or with the Briscoes. They're very, very good. I wish they'd let their personalities out a little more.

I'm a little embarrassed it took me a few times to see that S&O = Santana and Ortiz. IMO the Outrunners stuff seems a bit too contrived but the Briscoes stuff was money. And I thought the promos with Santana and Ortiz after Cash's cut were a bit overwrought.

Smart Mark Video should be eligible for the WON HOF. I think a lot about the early-mid 2000s is very different without them and that would extend to our modern landscape.

This is such an appropriate idea that I can’t believe I didn’t think of. I wasn’t a regular customer of theirs but as somebody who discovered this side of the stratosphere in the 90s I agree that honest tape trading and marketing needs to be acknowledged.

Hulk Hogan has continued to validate everything Jesse said about him in the 80's

Sir, this is the "Hot Takes" thread, not the "100% correct statements of facts" thread.

Jeff Jarrett has never been remotely interesting in any on-screen persona.

Jeff Jarrett is the best terrible wrestler of all time.  He's Kirk Cousins.

His early Memphis he was a tremendous babyface. The Lawler/Jarrett v. Moonfogs feud was good stuff and it rested on Jeff being a sympathetic babyface. Why Vince saw Jeff and thought he'd be a strutting country music heel I will never understand

Jeff Jarret had 1 of the best dropkicks ever that’s overshadowed by 1 or 2 that were better, and the fact that you forgot how big he was. Very impressive for a guy his size. Besides that he was uninteresting and even a little pathetic later in his career. Just a little because he was human. I wouldn’t call him a PoS or anything. He’s only been remembered around here for surprising Vince with the hold up.

I am glad to hear that you recently came out of the coma you have been in since shortly before this year's Owen Hart Invitational Tournament.

I liked shit-stirrer '97 Jarrett as a persona, and I thought "dad just trying to raise his kids after his wife passed" Jarrett was hugely sympathetic.

He's a much better babyface than heel, though, and he spent an awful lot of his career heeling.

His return to WCW in 1999 damned near ruined him, though.

My big feeling on Jarrett is that he was fine, middle of the road, in his prime relative to his peers. But his peers are gone and he has a number of skills that very few people currently wrestling tap into in the same way so it makes him stand out in modern times. Dustin is the same way (but Dustin was generally much better than Jarrett so it's even more so).

They made comparison on BTS last week about newsletter resentment of the similar pushes of JJ and Dustin at around the same time.

nah.  It's Justin Credible.

Justin Credible is perfectly poised at the tipping point where if he gets any better at the craft of wrestling he paradoxically becomes a less effective wrestler.

I don't think Justin Credible is anywhere close to the best terrible wrestler.  He's a good terrible wrestler, but not anywhere close to the greatest.

I cannot in good conscience call anyone capable of getting a real good match out of Jack Victory at an ECW house show in 2000 a terrible wrestler.

Oh man. Double J Double MMA was tremendous television, and I'm enjoying "locker room conscience" Jarrettt in his current run.
