RazorbladeKiss87 Posted November 21, 2024 Posted November 21, 2024 Kikutaro does comedy right. Works his shtick and does just enough traditional wrestling to make sure there's a contrast. 1
Octopus Posted November 21, 2024 Posted November 21, 2024 Kikutaro Vs Colt Cabana at F1rst Wrestling in 2019 was awesome.
Octopus Posted November 21, 2024 Posted November 21, 2024 I like when a heel is in a dress shirt and then they take repetitive flat-back bumps from a fiery series of punches and their nice dress shirt is no longer tucked in and they roll out of the ring and look completely disheveled while the hero poses, taunts, and aggressively yells at the bad guy before the end of the show. 5

If they would have played it straight when Ron Simmons stood in the ring with Vince and asked why there had never been a black heavyweight champion, they could have built him into a top star, but they didn't and we got a gang war. 7

WCW is what got me started on wrestling and I'd say the biggest factors were The Giant, La Parka and Disco Inferno for those first few weeks. They're great characters! Disco's natural development from goofy no-threat comedy heel to fiery fighting babyface over the course of two years might just be my favorite character development in the whole Nitro Era, though. Go back and watch him beat Saturn for the TV title. The crowd is fully behind him. Fucking DISCO got over like that, and then they didn't know what to do with him and basically hard reset his character back to what it was in early 1996. Booking malpractice on a smaller scale, but malpractice nonetheless. 3
Octopus Posted November 22, 2024 Posted November 22, 2024 Idk if this counts but in videos where people dip food into a sauce and they clearly way over dip for dramatic effect and the amount is much more than their mouthful I find extremely disingenuous and in fact pretty insulting. 1 2

I totally agree with this. I need some comedy in my wrestling here and there. If I wanted to watch nothing but serious combat, I'd stick to 90's All Japan or something. Even the 80s NWA stuff had some absurd promos mixed in with the wrestling. Yano and Stalker Ichikawa are probably my favorite examples of this, but I didn't see their stuff on a weekly basis like I did with Santino's WWE run where it got tiring. If the rumor about Bryan's pitch for Danhausen was shot down, then I can only shake my head. It would have been the perfect use for him.

Farooq’s gimmick was shit from the start…putting the scary black guy with the hot white woman was the same dogwhistle trash WCW did with Doom when their gimmick started. Not to mention his gear. 1

Not to mention his gear. I meant specifically after Wrestlemania 13, where he called Vince out for never having a black heavyweight champion. The weird technicolor gladiator gear he started with was fucking horrible. 7 hours ago, Ramo2653 said: If I wanted to watch nothing but serious combat, I'd stick to 90's All Japan or something. odessasteps Posted November 23, 2024 Posted November 23, 2024 I was going to say that AJPW had a designated comedy match on almost every show. .

Kikutaro tried to rip me off at his merch table at this show (I paid him for both a signed picture and a dvd of his, he only gave me one before I corrected him), still one of my most treasured indie wrestling memories. (It could have easily been a language barrier issue, I choose to go with the funnier interpretation). 1

J.H. Posted November 23, 2024 Posted November 23, 2024 (edited) I had a really great merch table experience at an ROH show in 05. Dragon Gate guys were there and I bought a DG towel and without even asking Dragon Kid, Genki Horiguchi and Ryo Saito grabbed it and began signing it. The ROH guy tried stopping them, wanting to charge me for each signature, but they insisted and I was so grateful. I left that show one smiling motherfucker James Edited November 24, 2024 by J.H. 4

Ace Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 Hiroshi Tanahashi should drop the plan of the 1 year retirement tour and call it quits at on 1/4/25. It hurts to watch him move nowadays.

Idk if I 100% agree, but I do think his overall contributions to the business outside of an onscreen character are negligible, and vastly overrated, and his "angry old man" podcast gimmick shits on the little bit he did for the business. 5
