Because not using the hyphen means using a word that can mean two opposite things. If you write "Adam Page resigns!" I have no idea if you mean he signed a new contract or quit. I think what's happening is a combination of a red light source somewhere to Shane's left and either HDR or some kind of filter on the picture.
