I always liked the rip-off of Ravishing by Bonnie Tyler that Hogan used.

If you are going by timeline of release, the Bonnie Tyler song is the rip-off. Hulk Hogan's Rock N Wrestling debuted in September 1985 with this as the theme song, and The Wrestling Album with this listed as "Hulk's Theme" (which I don't think he ever actually ended up using as in-ring entrance music, I think on TV they had already switched "Real American" over to him after Windham/Rotundo used it once or twice) came out in November 1985. The Bonnie Tyler album featuring "Ravishing" didn't come out until June 1986.

Though technically, it's more of a case of "self-plagiarism" than "ripoff", since Jim Steinman (of Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell fame) wrote "Hulk's Theme" for the Wrestling Album and then recycled it for "Ravishing" when he was producing Bonnie Tyler's record.

Speaking of Hulk's themes, why in the hell didn't they overdub "Eye of the Tiger" with "Real American" for the VHS release of Wrestlemania I? The music they dubbed in over EOTT sounds like it's straight out of a 70s John Holmes film.

There was also a period where Ciampa was coming out without music in NXT within the last few years, or is that not an acceptable answer for an "Old School" thread?

I'm really spotty on keeping up with NXT, was there a reason he was doing so?

I think the proper question is who popularized it and made it common.  Hogan's "Eye of the Tiger" changed everything.  It was perfect for him and others followed.  Except a lot of them used that same song and it didn't fit at all.

I always thought it was the Freebirds who really popularized it, though others used it before them.

I know the music videos in wrestling was a Memphis thing that spread to World Class and then UWF.

Crowds were vociferously booing him so they leaned into it.

IRS had "music". It was just someone typing and hitting the keys on an adding machine.

There's an entire odd subset of WWF/E theme songs that aren't actually music. My favourite is this:

Makes me laugh, it's so stupid.

I'm not convinced he had any. A search comes up with the theme they used for him in video games (the typewritter) but I don't think that was ever used on any TV show or PPV. He only came out to Ted's theme either as a part of Money Inc. or the Million Dollar Corporation.

I'm fairly certain IRS used the type writer "theme" when he did squash matches on Superstars and RAW. I'll have to see if there are any examples on the Network.

When did a victorious wrestler's theme music being played after the match become the norm? I'm guessing Hogan in the WWF but when? IIRC it didn't happen at WM1 but did at WM2.

Hulk definitely used it in Fall 85. It was at Wrestling Classic and at a Toronto MLG house show against Savage that’s on YouTube. It was brief.

My first experience of Tom Pritchard is my current watch of Smokey Mountain, but was he alway doing an obvious Roddy Piper imitation in promos?

Yes.

What's even funnier is watching Bruce for it when he was in Global.

He also claimed to be a Marine but wasn't.

You joke but I worked with a conservative radio host who was so proud of "exposing" Sarge's stolen valor.  He took that shit as a point of pride.  What a goof that guy was.

Now and then I read that Abdullah the Butcher used something called the 'Python sleeper' as a finish back in the day. Now I'm familiar with the Sudanese Meat Cleaver and I could swear I even saw him use a stunner once in the early 90s in All Japan, but never have I seen him use a sleeperhold. Does anyone know, for example, if it was a basic old school sleeper or something like a cobra clutch or something else entirely?

He used a diamond cutter/ace crusher at least once on tape, in a squash over Kikuchi of all people. It ruled. I don't recall seeing the sleeper.

Yeah, I was pretty sure it was Kikuchi or Ogawa. Glad I didn't imagine that whole Stone Cold Abby moment.

Having a Sunday chat about what if Hogan has a Karrion Kross and wins the belt at Mania V but has to forfeit the belt due to injury.

What would you do? Do you rush the Warrior title win a year early? Go back to Macho King for an extended run? You have upper-level babyfaces like Snake, Hacksaw, Beefcake and Dusty. Do you gamble on them?

Does Vince just put the belt on fucking Zeus?

I can kind of see a world where Vince goes with Beefcake for obvious reasons.

I think it all depends on how long Hogan would be out, if it’s less than 3 months they keep the belt on him but have a heel injury him to explain why he isn’t on house shows. If Hulk’s out 3 to 6 months they put the belt back on Savage and Hulk wins it back at Survivor Series. If The Hulkster is out 6 months to a year Savage still gets the belt and drops it to Warrior at WMVI while Hogan has his comeback match in the co-main. I think Savage gets the belt since he’s the strongest heel they have and the upper level babyfaces challenging for the belt might put buts in the seats.

Also they wouldn’t have Hulk come out and vacate the title, there would be an angle.

These sound about right. I think it if it's anything longer than 3 months, they just find a way to stick it back on Savage and have Savage claim that he was the one who hurt Hulk. Savage was doing gangbusters business as champ after his heel turn so no reason to not ride that train if Hogan's out.

And here's another curveball to throw into that mix. Say Hogan's out for extended period of time and they put the belt back on Savage. I remember hearing about a random Savage/Bad News Brown post-Savage heel turn match where the crowd got behind BNB. If Hulk is out for a year, what about turning BNB face to take on a crazy heel Macho Man? Ass kicking Bad News Brown vs. Crazy Paranoid Savage for the title is a program I'd have watched all day every day in 1989.

imagine the luxury of not only having Macho Man Randy Savage as your Plan B but oh just hire away Dusty Rhodes if you need Plan C.

not even a need to rush Warrior, gamble on Jake's sobriety, or experiment with Bruti or Duggan.

Savage makes the most sense since he's the only top heel (Andre being physically shot and Dibiase having cooled off since 88).  Now, we know Rude, Hennig or even the freshly turned Martel probably could've been just fine as a top heel but it would've been sudden to hotshot any of them up the card and you can easily see why they'd conclude there was no need to.
