  1. Re: Mandy released! Poor woman. Feel so bad for her for losing her job like that. It feels like I should do something to help. Was there some kind of website, or did I understand correctly? Maybe subscribing to that would help her out during this difficult time. Just so I could say I did something.

  3. Caught some stuff last night. Caught the rest this morning. Match 5 of 9, Bock vs Jumbo, AJPW, 7/13/78: The armwork in the first ten minutes of this one is just all time great. Previous matches between them were more clinical and academic and "title match" but here he's doing top wristlocks and double wristlocks it's just so, so mean. It takes the full ten minutes for Jumbo to start to get an advantage and power over the top and Bock just grabs the hair or lays in a knee to the gut (he hadn't had to previously) after all that work and struggle. Finally something clicks in Jumbo's pre-grumpy brain and he steps around on an arm pulling wristlock and rakes Bock's face with his boot to take over. You can see him level up mid match. Bock's still able to keep the advantage due to the hurt arm though (Jumbo selling after he hits elbows) and Bock presses it in the corner, but it's just not enough of a lever and Jumbo comes back. Bock's able to block the belly to back though and hits one of his own. Exciting stuff. He followed it with a pile driver but went back to the well and Jumbo comes back. By this point, it's sort of clear that Bock has to do something extra to really keep Jumbo down and he tries, going up for a second rope knee drop, something he's learned from Stevens over the years, but never does himself. He misses (of course) and Jumbo starts on the leg, going for a figure four. Bock survives, but is selling big. He's good enough at almost every point to find a way back whether it's an eyepoke or punching from underneath and he manages to start the King of the Mountain and even post Jumbo on the outside. He's still desperate though and gets backdropped when he tries a pile driver on the floor. The match really opens up after that, with Jumbo hitting a knee lift so high that the announcers call it a leg lariat. He starts on the back after this, but Bock wins a punch exchange. I love the balance between a competent champion and a desperate cheater with Bockwinkel. He was always credible. Always dangerous. But backed against a wall, he'd do anything to survive. It makes it mean all the more a little later on when Jumbo is able to fire up and win a punch exchange and hit a stalling turning pile driver of his own. As the match rolls into the last five minutes, Jumbo leans more and more on Bock's back (With Bock doing some amazing full body selling draped into the ropes), getting the crab and ultimately going for the cobra twist. Bock tries to turn it and crashes into the ref. This leads to a phantom fall after the belly to back and another ref bump as Bock nails him when Jumbo moves. There's a figure four afterwards (and maybe they should have not moved onto the back and stayed with the leg if that was going to be the phantom win #2?) but the ref calls for the dq and Jumbo is despondent. This was some really good stuff. If last one they were equals, this one you got the sense that Jumbo had Bock's number and furthermore, that he was going to get him next time. Jungle Boy vs Cage was fun and JB is definitely in a giant killer mode right now. I know it'll take some more time for "Big Bill" to sound right but they're not there yet. Obviously the great stuff here is the tease for Hook/JB vs The Firm. I honestly hope it lasts a bit and we get something like Hook/JB vs the Acclaimed for the titles at some point. I loved the chaos of the HOB squash. It really had the feel of early Shield vs Wyatts stuff. It feels apparent that they'll be going for the 6-man titles at some point which is good as they'll serve as bases to ground things a bit, but I'd love a two month BCC vs House of Black program instead. The Mist wasn't black enough. QT's reactions were great. I was hoping for some more progression towards something with Kingston and Ortiz though. Kingston vs any of these guys would be very interesting. Andretti looked loads better against Dante (I think it was Dante) a couple of months ago. His stuff just wasn't hitting hard at all. Looked very floaty, but who cares right? It was the moment. I still haven't caught Jericho vs Claudio yet, but is the Ocho counting new? We couldn't see Jericho's face the first time it happened, when they were counting along to his clotheslines in the corner but that's usually the sort of reaction that makes Jericho grin like an idiot and break character. I like that they had him win with an actual move, or series of moves instead of just a roll up because there was a bunch of that on the show. Tay vs Ruby mainly wanted me see Athena vs Tay where they just forearm each other all match. Some slick stuff here to go along with the brutality. I loved Tay's judo throw late in the match. What a great cut off to a babyface comeback. I really like the way that MJF shifted his act slightly now that he's champ. I'd like there to be a bit more illusion of force to the hand on the ropes for the abdominal stretch, for instance, but I really liked the idea of it. There was so much of "playing the hits" from Flair or Dibiase or whoever else here, but no one else in AEW is really doing anything even close to it. I especially loved the bit where he ran into the crowd and really seemed to be messing with people. That got him chants, but it was still good, and it'll be great when it leads to a babyface running after him. It wasn't the smoothest match in the world, but for the most part, that felt like struggle. Oh and the Page promo about not knowing his kid's name was so AEW since you had Evil Uno trying to emote behind him. Just Evil Uno. Just in his goofy mask and his unique frame. So AEW. Good stuff upcoming. Taped for elevation was a Bunny/Emi tag, an Ortiz/Eddie tag (vs Shinno), Athena vs Vertvixen, Trustbusters vs Takeshita/Top Flight/Matt Hardy/Ethan Page (which sounds super entertaining on paper), and Claudio/Yuta vs Workhorsemen. I'm excited for the Best Friends to team with Dustin. Sammy vs Mox was ok last time and should be fun and violent. Skye has a chance to step up against Britt. Obviously we've got Shida vs Hayter and FTR coming off of a couple of losses and ready to destroy the Gunn Club.

  4. A lot of credit for Andretti should really go to QT Marshall. The match they had on Dark was QT giving the brightest amount of shine to a relative unknown who previously lost a few matches. The fact it was in DC at the time (close to where he regularly is at MCW) helped give the crowd more incentive to give a damn about him. But it really not only made me think "Hmm...maybe one day..." with Action but also cemented my take that QT is the MVP of Dark/Elevation. It wouldn't surprise me if Jericho was looking for an opponent and QT got in his ear. And while the finish was a total "Wait, what?!" moment it also was beautifully done as it built off the organic build in interest from the crown. Andretti's not always going to have two aces helping him so I hope he can consistently bring the goods. But if he can then he's got a helluva future. Speaking of MCW he's going to be on their show on the 30th that has no outside talent appearing. So he's going to make some serious bank off the merch table. Also, there's a thought creeping in my head that thinks back to when Jungle Boy went against Jericho. It might have been too soon then. But if JB had this type of win instead of the close-but-not-quite result I can imagine how much sooner his stock would have risen.

  5. Thursday Reflections: Watching the International Feed and a few things stick out. WHAT WAS UP WITH THE HEAT?!? It was like they had a free buffet and gave everyone ten bucks to come into the building. That was amazing. I lived in Texas from age three to age five. My sister was born there. One of my first memories is being scared of Dusty Rhodes yelling through the TV screen and hiding behind the seat cushions. So yeah, there is a tradition of wrestling in Texas. The heat in the Jericho match was fucking PREPOSTEROUS during the picture in picture of the Jericho/Andretti match. I'm guessing Jericho experienced that during Wrestlemania or something, but he had to be delighted. I love that he knew he had to actually put him over clean to get him over since Bandido, Dalton Castle and Tomohiro Ishii were already known commodities so he could give them enough to take them to the next level and still go over, but he had to go 100 percent with Andretti. I'm thinking Ruby Soho/ Tay Melo is my match of the week so far, I'll have to rewatch Gia Scott/ Masha Slamovich. They showed ONE moment of daylight in that match- when Soho was doing the running kicks in the corner. Other than that, that was fucking BattlARTS level of STIFF. Tay Melo was SO FUCKNG GREAT during picture in picture, yelling at Ruby and the crowd and being as much of a HEAT MACHINE as Sammy. When Tay rips up the fan's Ruby sign, Tony Schiavonne is fucking hilarious being outraged that Tay destroyed something A FAN MADE WITH LOVE! and Taz is even funnier not being impressed. "Just make more of an effort." I am excited to see who Ruby gets to tag with against Tay and Anna JAS. That was a fucking great episode of professional wrestling. EDIT: I was thinking that Tay should just yell in Portuguese to make it feel more natural- like when Asuka yells in Japanese.

  6. Just watched Dynamite today because I'm home with my sick kid. I missed last night because it was the Survivor finale and Survivor is my favorite, even above pro wrestling. Anyways, some thoughts: 1) The Death Triangle vs. The Elite stuff is fine. I wasn't paying as much attention because I had to go make my kid toast but it's fun in terms of "sick moves, bro" stuff and I liked the ending of Nick Jackson trying to make his comeback but not being able to because of the hammer. I like that it set up the gimmick of the next match in the series. I'm mixed on TK revealing the final two gimmicks because while everyone is assuming it goes seven, I still want some illusion of disbelief. 2) The Jericho/Andretti match was a perfect match. Like, absolutely perfect professional wrestling. It felt like a match where Roger Federer loses in five-sets in the first round at Arthur Ashe to some teenager who plays the match of his life. Absolute MOTYC. It's kind of like the awesome Mox/Yuta bloodbath in that it told a perfect story. 3) I really loved Ruby vs. Conti, too. I think this was a fantastic carry job by Ruby in terms of how to actually tell a story in a wrestling ring. I've said it many times before but I think Ruby is an incredible worker. She knows her limitations and how to turn them into strengths. She never played sports as a kid and has no athletic background. But she was a drama kid and into punk, which is so performative. She had to try and find her athleticism when she started wrestling and that's so fucking insane to contemplate. But she sticks to what she knows she can do and makes everything look snug, she plays to the crowd like no other, and she is an all-time great at reacting (as Mr. Regal calls it on his podcast) to whatever her opponent is doing to her. Conti's more athletic and her stuff looks hurty (and probably is since she's sloppy.) Conti has good timing at doing the vicious stuff and cheap shots that any good heel does. She needs a lot of help with her expressions and acting -- she did the whole "OH MY GOD HOW DID SHE KICK OUT!!!" face a few times in the match. If she only used that face once for Ruby's final kick-out before the ending, it would have had a lot more impact and would have really made it to a new level for me. Ruby made the match by generating as much sympathy as showing babyface fire. It felt a little bit like one of the OC bangers in that the match was laid out really well and Ruby's incredible character work made it shine. 4) Great Hangman promo. As someone who is in his 40s and still e-feds (I'm doing a "Sunset Boulevard" gimmick with a faded old Sheri Martel-type manager returning and corrupting a young jobber to do her bidding) -- I can attest that promo was the single most e-fed thing I have seen in AEW, and there are so many e-fed things in AEW (like the existence of Darby Allin.) Hangman talking about forgetting his kid while his masked friend emotes in the background is absolute e-fed. I feel like I wrote that. 5) Man, that main event was fucking perfection. A+. Straight up Starcarde 1997 shit with MJF doing all kinds of old-school heel stuff but without it feeling like a cover band. Ricky Starks was a great Sting at the first Clash of Champions. Dragon coming out looking for revenge was Dusty Rhodes. Another MOTYC. There were so many great things in this match. For all of his warts as a character, MJF is a fantastic throwback heel. He's watched every Flair/Tully/DiBiase classic but makes it his own. It's a great differentiator because everyone else of the past two decades of wrestling has completely different influences. But that was a fantastic performance by Ricky Starks, too. Wonderful babyface. As far as the booking of the match: I think that was absolutely perfect. MJF won in the most cheap bullshit way possible He now moves on to Dragon. Sting didn't win at his first big shot at the title. He didn't lose since it was a time limit draw with split judges. But Starks should be the person who dethrones MJF next year. He needs a great second feud. Would love him versus Jericho or Sami but looks like they're going another direction. Amazing show.

  7. I'm completely amazed at Jericho totally making Andretti in 10 minutes. He a) lost b) clean c) to the kid's finisher. Didn't even do the shitty kickout at 3.01 seconds... he sold the crap out of it. More vets should look at how he handled his business as a shining example of how to elevate a kid. MJF really flashed his wrestling bonafides with that nasty stretch sequence near the finish. Glorious stuff. That said, they could've done better by Starks with that finish... he got chumped. Not a good look. Re Danielson, this shouldn't be about the title at all and he should mention that. Tell MJF that he wouldn't take any satisfaction from winning that Burberry monstrosity... he just wants to torture MJF to within an inch of his life for what he did to Regal, and screw the title. Put the absolute fear of God in the man.

  8. One thing about Ruby is that I love how she works the headscissors slam into the turnbuckles into her matches. It's a very obtuse spot that takes complex set up since it involves her opponent being in a specific position and maybe doing something that they wouldn't normally do. In some ways it's very much a "powerbomb Kidman" type of spot, but she thoughtfully sets it up in interesting and believable ways with a lot of variety.

  9. Some people from a FB wrestling fans group I’m in was there and the chant was 100% legit and he also says his group kind of got it started. They were in the fourth row on hard camera, one had the “Ruby So-ho-ho” sign. Think they’re just a bunch of garage punk folks who love pro wrestling.

  12. Crazy day today. Looks like I have finally arrived at my down-time, though. So: Kip Sabian vs Tony Deppen and Kingston & Ortiz vs Slim J & Jeeves K of The Trustbusters were both REALLY GOOD and VERY FUN Dark matches this week! Winter has already arrived here in Kansai. It was 6 degrees Celsius outside while Dynamite was going on. 13 years ago, that would not really have seemed cold to me. I get a little more Japanese every year and a little less Canadian. I bet that Kenny Omega can relate to that. It's one reason why I am inclined to like the guy. LOVED the crowd today, obviously. The Elite needing to overcome the odds and win three straight is EXACTLY how I would have booked it. But (as has been said) now that the seventh match has been announced as a ladder match, it would be INSANE for Death Triangle to win match # 5 or 6. HOWEVER we just saw today that AEW is DOWN WITH THE INSANITY. So anything is possible. Holy fuck do I ever hate seeing Jeff Jarrett in AEW. Not a big fan of seeing big Cass in AEW, either. Maybe I need a whole post over in the Navel Gazing thread to get into why? Jungle Boy vs Brian Cage, Hook and Jungle Boy teaming up, Mox,Claudio and Wheeler? Those are things I LOVE to see in AEW. My suggestion for JBJP & Hook's team name and theme song: I miss singing along with Malakai's old entrance theme, GRZNFLRGNTROOST. Am I stoked for Hayter vs Shida? Yes. Yes indeed I am. I honestly legit joked that Action was going to pull the upset. Good HEAVENS! I popped like a madman when it happened. That was GREAT. Jericho is GREAT. ANYTHING can happen. Crowd was SO HAWT for all that, too. Oh boy was that FUN! Nice HEATED brawl between Tay and Ruby! Great promo from Hanger! DUSTIN WITH BESSFRENS!! SO MUCH GOOD WRESTLING COMING UP! MJF totally looks like a dude who takes tons of PEDs but doesn't really train heavy. Which is a PERFECT look for a cowardly heel. And hats off to him for not holding back in that role. Bryan chasing him off at the end was pertmuch CLASSIC pro wrestling.

  15. You know how a band will put out a concept album just to prove that they can play anything? I think that’s Chris Jericho’s 2022. The dude has had practically every match type possible this year and has knocked it out of the park. Traveling champion stuff? Brawls? Hoss fights? Tags? Garbage marches? And now jobber upsets. And all bangers.

  18. Loved this show, and I agree with everyone here using the word 'chaotic' - in the best possible way, of course. Really dig the Andretti signing - this isn't the right word, but he's going to make a wonderful 'replacement' for Dante Martin in the men's singles division now that Darius has returned (and hopefully for a good, long time this go 'round). And how unselfish of Jericho, man. Love it. Lots of people mentioning Scott Hall here in the context of Razor/Kid on Raw, but to me, it felt like a real full-circle moment from when Hall changed the finish to a Nitro match with Jericho in '97, and put him over without permission from Bischoff. I loved this entire show, other than the presence of Jeff Jarrett. I feel awful saying it because he's in great shape, can still talk, can still go, etc... but seeing him out there is a painful reminder of WCW's death, and TNA's... TNAness. For those of you who are familiar with TV Tropes: whenever I see Jarrett on TV, I feel like Ted McGinley just walked on to the set of my favorite sitcom. MJF vs Danielson should be a good one, and I predict Danielson will lead him to his best match yet. I have a feeling both men are going to be highly motivated to put on a banger here, MJF as the new champ in his second defense, and Danielson wanting to outdo his peers in Punk, Cody, Mox etc. who have all had great ones with Friedman. Didn't love the ending with Starks losing to a nut shot and skulduggery -- did they give Jarrett the pencil? -- but I think if he follows it up next week with a big win, and a "Max, I didn't forget... Sleep with one eye open' promo, he'll be ok (even if they don't get back to him vs MJF until, idk, let's say summer).

  23. Will she blade? WILL SHE? Tay IS hardcore. But first, number four of seven! Oh no! Nick Jackson is injured! BRANDON! BRANDON! CUTLER! Omega is wrestling for SEVEN! This is awesome. PENTA hits the GNARLIEST PILEDRIVER of the week so far! GREAT nearfall by Omega. NICK RETURNS! He's wrestling on one leg! HAMMER TIME! NICK TAPS! Death Triangle is 2/3rds EVIL! WEAPONS MATCH! NO DQ! So fun! Nick should have stayed out and Omega should have killed all three of Death Triangle. Tonight's match was set up next week's match, which is fine. Oh no! They are setting up the Acclaimed versus Jeff Jarratt and Jay Lethal! I guess they can't wrestle FTR every week. YES! BAN THE GIANT SWING! IT IS BARBARIC! IT's Brian Cage versus Jungle Boy Jack Perry! Now that Cage has the trios title, he can put over everyone in singles matches. Brian Cage IS Dax Harwood! GREAT Vertical Suplex off the second rope by Brian Cage! In picture in picture, Brian Cage beats on Jack Perry to get the crowd behind his struggle to escape the Kanyon-influenced offence of Brian Cage! The crowd is molten for Perry! Cage is cutting off Perry with a truly hellish Lariat! Cage taps while Prince Nana distracts the ref! Brian Cage is gonna win! Perry reverses it for the roll-up! Oh man, Lee Moriarty versus Jack Perry will be thoroughly awesome. BIG BILL! It's HOOK! Okay, this is a wad of fun! Wait! Waitwaitwait! Blackpool Combat Club versus Hangman and the DARK ORDER? AWESOME. House of Black takes on the Factory! The Factory are destroyed by House of Black! Skye Blue SPEAKS! Blue versus Britt Baker will be perfectly fine. HEY! It's Action Andretti! I assume Jericho will make him look so good that he gets signed. AND HE'S DOING IT AGAIN! Jericho is a fucking Best Bout Machine. The heat is fucking amazing. Action with the Lariats! Man, Jericho is fucking awesome. So many GREAT fucking NEARFALLS. WHAT THE FUCK! WHAAT THE FUCK! ACTION ANDRETTI GETS THE PIN! Chris Jericho is the greatest wrestler in the history of wrestling. This is the what? fourth guy he's MADE on TV this year. SO. FUCKING. AWESOME. That was great. Dallas is the wrestling capital of the world, it seems. FTR versus the Ass Boys will COMPLETELY fucking rule. Tay Melo is wearing red. Hmmmmmm. I don't know if she is blading. Oh man, this match is fucking great! Ruby Soho is totally fucking laying it in. Tay is built for brawling. This is great. GOTCH STYLE PILEDRIVER by Tay FOR TWO! Ruby Soho kicks her in the face! Destination Unknown! That was fucking great. POSTMATCH! Anna JAS breaks Ruby's face! I was hoping Willow Nightingale would make the save. It's the main event! I can't believe that this will be the THIRD best match of the night- behind Soho/Melo and FRICKIN JERICHO/ACTION ANDRETTI! This match is good though. Basic solid wrestling. MJF is awesome doing the Old School Abdominal Stretch with added extra CHEATING! Nice Lariat by Starks. GREAT NEARFALL on the Tiger Driver! GREAT NEARFALL on the Powerbomb to the knee by MJF! GREAT Arm Submissions by MJF. LOWBLOW FOR THE WIN! That was fucking great. That was a VERY Heavyweight Championship styled match. Postmatch! AMERICAN DRAGON! AEW RULES THE ENTIRE MOTHERUFCKING FUCKING MOITHREFUCKING WORLD!

  24. I am in awe of that Jericho match. Perfect pro wrestling. Masterful. He might have changed my Mox vote for WOTY. OCHOOOO! Good meaty story telling across the boards on this episode. AEW has shed its Punk skin. I heard somewhere somebody saying something along the lines of sprucing up the Dynamite set for a bigger show. Nah. Save that for the PPV. Let just Dynamite also be big. The weekly shows need to be important. All the time. More. Title matches on tv fucking rules.

  26. Just rewatched the Andretti-Jericho match, this is the type of shit that makes me love pro wrestling. They teased the upset masterfully a couple of times near the end but you could tell everyone was waiting for the eventual Judas Effect out of nowhere that ends so many Jericho matches. I love when you’re watching a guy having arguably the best moment of his life on camera, such a feel good moment.

  28. Right! I love that spot. Not that I have any athletic ability, but a head-scissors seems like someone who had to learn how to use their body in an athletic endeavor late in the game can master. But the added flourish of it headed into the corner and figuring out with her opponent how to make it work within the confines of a wrestling match makes it something really special.

  29. Agreed that Ricky should've probably taken one more move after the low blow for a better finish, especially since he came back with a spear right after he took the same kick last week. Otherwise, it was a good match with MJF milking all kinds of old-school heel tropes, and Ricky delivering a firey babyface performance. The finishing stretch picked up, but didn't go into overkill mode which MJF shouldn't be doing in his first tv defense anyway. Tay/Ruby, Jericho/Andretti, HOB squash, and Hangman's promo were all very good as well. The trios series match was fine, but I think they missed an opportunity with announcing the triple overkill stipulation. Next week's match being a 3-minute affair where the Elite snatch the hammer and use it to get a quick win would make more sense putting over Nick's kayfabe injury, and giving him time to heal before the next two gimmick matches. Even better if they hit Fenix with it, leading to him willingly and maliciously using it to win the final match to get some real storyline mileage out of this series and giving DT a heel segment to their title reign.

  30. Man they’ve got to find a way to leverage some Time Warner synergies to get Hook and Jungle Boy into some tween female programming. Talk about an act tailor made for the Tiger Beat demo. Like get them into The Descendants 7 or presenting a Teen Choice Award to BTS or something. It’s a license to print money.

  31. Super fun show that started pretty good and seemed to keep getting better. Jericho/Andretti of course the highlight and he seemed the perfect guy to do that with. I was blown away by the QT match from October linked above and super impressed, at the time thinking he may have earned something more then. I love how there was no followup and he hadn't appeared since, so this felt organic tonight. Awesome crowd reaction and a really well done "123 Kid moment". Very cool to see him immediately signed after that and I look forward to what he does next. Well deserved. Hangman's promo was badass, real good stuff. Was really looking forward to Ruby/Tay and thought they delivered the goods as well. Solid main event with a big fight feel despite the obvious outcome. Finish felt a little weak but hopefully Starks bounces back. Nice transition back to MJF/Bryan now. Good looking early lineups for the next shows as it feels like the next 6 weeks or so have all got some major events.

  39. What a great show in front of a molten crowd! Ruby Soho and Tay try to kill each other, Action Andretti who looks like he's a distant relative to the lads in Top Flight gets a gigantic win, and MJF retains his title through shitcannery and keeps Ricky Starks looking strong only to have to flee for his life from Bryan Danielson. The mind boggles as to how MJF will weasel out a victory when he defends against American Dragon. I think I can live MJF's Reign of Terror if it is going to consist of ridiculous trash talk punctuated by interludes of yellow-backed hilarity. I hate his business exposing promos, but he is genuinely great when it comes to bringing humor to the role of the chicken shit heel. Penta is on board with the cheating and Death Triangle is up 3-1 over The Elite. Bring on the plunder and the international objects. This shit is going to be in an exploding barbwire ring before it's all over. Let's hope Khan hires a better demolitions guy for the big finish.

  41. You gotta love Jericho's looks of shock and misery. He's so good at it. I only caught about half of this one but Tay/Ruby brought it, Andretti/Jericho brought it, and the main brought it. Tay is such a good shitbird heel now and Ruby going Saito Suplex crazy like Eddie was great. "Let's Go Jobber" with Mr. Jobber busting out the split legged moonsault and the ARABIAN MOONSAULT to win himself a job was awesome. And then Maxwell, superworker at making people look like chumps, eked out a win against a very game Ricky. Oh and Hangman cut a money promo! Good good stuff.
