RIPPA Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 I remember this from when I worked at Borders and it still gives me a chuckle now. When any place that has to organize movies can't decide what genre to put a movie under. My library has really struggled with Silver Linings Playbook and Focus recently. The absolute best is when they put the blu ray in one section (say Comedy) but the regular version in a different section (say Drama)
Brian Fowler Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 I once found DC's Identity Crisis in the comedy section at Barnes and Noble. Right in there with Garfield and Peanuts 1
(BP) Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 I remember a lot of video stores having "Special Interest" sections that were about 8 feet of workout tapes, wrestling PPVs, foreign films, and Foxy Boxing. There'd be Body By Jake next to Starrcade next to The 400 Blows. It was usually right next to where the partition for the porn room started.
odessasteps Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 Having 1 copy of a book at borders often led to hilarious shelving errors. A personal favorite was religion books ending up in fiction.

I don't remember who it was, but I distinctly remember a comedy bit about going into a video store looking for 400 Blows and being told they don't carry porn at Blockbuster. "It's not porn!" "Oh, okay. Martial arts." Um, anyway. GF and I saw Ratchet & Clank yesterday. It's all right but not special in the way the games are. The difference between what you can get away with in a PG movie and an E10 game is stark, though. Totally worth the $5 matinee tickets we bought, would've been disappointed if I'd paid $12 for an evening show in town. I'm completely incapable of evaluating a kids' movie by "kid" standards, so I'll be no help there. Bonus points to whoever at Sony or Insomniac insisted that Ratchet, Clank, Nefarius and Qwark keep their video game voices instead of being recast with celebs, though.
caley Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 I recently watched (for the first time) Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and was stunned by how much better either film is than the 2015 version. Like, more faithful to the comic books, better-paced, better action set pieces, just all-around better films. About the only thing the new one had over those ones is special effects and they weren't THAT much better, in all honesty. I do love that they decided to have a completely unnecessary Jessica Alba strips naked but doesn't turn invisible in both movies (That were supposedly both added after they cast her). Michael Chiklis is such a better Thing than Jamie Bell, it's not even in the same universe. 1
Curt McGirt Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Conan the Barbarian is still one of the funniest, wildest, most OTT films of all time. John Milius, like many, is a nut and a genius at the same time, and I love him for it.
Roman Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 I watched Tombstone again last night. Man, that is such a fun movie. Val Kilmer was great. 4

But really the only surprise is that your library actually has enough Blurays to need separate genre sections. The entire Bluray selection at my local lenders takes up a grand total of one or two shelves apiece.
Spritenaut 32 Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 People still use libraries? I live in a good-sized college town and we're down to one good-sized public library that appears to function mostly as a place for homeless to go during the day.

Rippa apparently has the most amazing library in the country from the sound of the things he gets from there. We're slowly starting to phase out DVDs and only buy new movies on Blu-Ray, so ours has grown to a full row but yea - we're not even organized enough to have DVD's separated into genres and we have a whole room dedicated to them.
RIPPA Posted May 6, 2016 Author Posted May 6, 2016 Well to be fair - I live in the 2nd richest county in America (by some metric) so they actual have thrown some money towards the library I am in the sweet spot as their are like 8 branches in the county - only 2 are good - and I live equally distant to both of them. So yeah - there is like two banks full of blu-rays (and I used to borrow 360 and PS3 games their too) Most of the folks there are using it for the internet or the kids activities But I get more current movies from there at a quicker rate than Netflix
Curt McGirt Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 I'm with Rippa in that I'm equidistant to two college town libraries with equally enormous DVD, CD, etc. collections that are very well-stocked. But since I live outside the city limits now and my cards have expired I might as well be another homeless person.
zev Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 3 high quality libraries in my county. You can request titles from any of the branches and they'll deliver them to the branch of your choice. This weekend it's 99 Homes, Hateful Eight, and a documentary on The Police for my viewing.
The Comedian Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 Burlington County, NJ has a fine library system. I recently went to the main branch for the first time in years and didn't recognize it from the new auditorium and snack bar section they'd added. 1

I haven't been to the library since I was a little kid, but I just moved back to the area and bought a house, so I'll have to check it out.
Raziel Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 Meanwhile, Mercer County's has like, 5 DVD's and a bunch of VHS.

Craig H Posted May 8, 2016 Posted May 8, 2016 We have 10 or more libraries here and a few of them are really great. We go on a weekly basis. I love libraries.
Jingus Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 Because I live in fucking Texas, aka "Ayn Rand's wet-dream paradise of the government not giving you a single goddamn thing", my library access is pretty limited. We've got one here in my town, but it's so tiny (literally one room inside a strip mall on the town square) that I don't even bother going there, it's so small that it's just pathetic and depressing. In the next town over there's a much bigger and better one... which only allows people from outside that town to become members if they pay a hefty membership fee, even if you live in the same county. They justify said fee by saying "hey, you've got libraries in your own towns, you don't NEED to come here" when most of the local small-town libraries are similar to the glorified closet that I just mentioned. The only one I bother patronizing is one in the next county, where some kindly saint bent the rules and let me join up even though technically I shouldn't be allowed to go there. Back to movies: on the Things I'm Glad I Missed In The 90s, boy howdy is fucking Disturbing Behavior now very high on the list. It's like the douchebags who made the What You Did Last Summer movies decided to do a Stepford Wives remake, only it's actually much much worse than that (still-shitty) actual Stepford Wives remake. The first scene alone is some of the worst bullshit I've ever seen, when a guy murders a girl by breaking her neck while she's in the middle of blowing him. And it gets worse from there, and I don't even have the energy to go into all the ways it sucks, but godDAMN does it suck.
caley Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 I watched Daddy's Home last night which was 100% better than I was expecting and repeatedly stolen by Hannibal Burress in a tiny role and, for pro wrestling lovers, there's an amazing John Cena cameo right at the end of the movie

It was waaaaaaaaay too crude for the way it was marketed and not nearly funny enough. I was really disappointed - I had pretty high expectations.
Elsalvajeloco Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 I thought it was okay, but mainly because it had Hannibal Burress and was only like 80 minutes long and some change.
