Rain on Saturday in Washington, no? At least that's what our local weather forecast said. Calgary looks like Beijing today with all the wildfire smoke blowing our way. Rough on the lungs.

MAYBE rain on Sunday for us. That's a big change since my original post. I sure as heck hope they're right.

The forecast has gone from a 60% chance of rain on Sunday to 0% on Saturday and 20% on Sunday. Nothing over a 20% chance in the next 15 days. :(

I know this is probably inappropriate given what happened today but I just saw tomorrow front page of the New York Daily News and how someone can't take every single person responsible for the front page take them out back and just beat them with an inch of their lives is beyond me.

Oh for fuck's sake! Yeah, after reading your post I went to find the front page because I expected maybe a tasteless headline, instead it was pictures I didn't wanna see (I haven't watched the video and probably never will). I agree, fuck the Daily News.

[uK papers] Same images were on the front cover of the Sun, the Star and the Mail yesterday. The Express, Mirror, Independent and Guardian went with the smiling selfie instead. Didn't see a Times.[/uK papers]

Holy shit... My step-sons still live in Seattle and they were saying it was pretty dry, but gave no indication it was that bad. We west-siders are used to hearing about weather extremes on the other side of the Cascades, y'know, you guys actually have seasons and stuff, have summer (July & August) and the rainy season (the other ten months). 100 degrees in Spokane or Tri-Cities is nothing unusual, but 110 is pretty damn extreme. Good luck, bro!

Guys, can ya say some words to whoever and ask for some rain for my beautiful state of Washington?  The entire state is basically on fire, or impacted by fire.  We had a baseball game canceled last Friday night here in Spokane because smoke was so thick that it was like standing next to a campfire with the wind blowing right into your face.  We've had ridiculous heat all summer - it was 110 degrees one day in June and has approached that a few times since - and no rain.  Seattle got 0.90" of rain - total - for all of May, June & July.  Spokane has had basically nothing since June 1.  We've had entire towns evacuated.  The DNR put out a call for volunteers to help with fighting fires last week.  We're flying in crews from Australia.  They're using jumbo jets to dump water on the fires.  And there's no relief in sight - just a single day (40% chance!) of "showers" possibly coming in the next 15 days here in Spokane.

So, yeah, say a few words if you get the chance.  We basically live in a forest here with trees all around that could go up at any time.  My friend's neighbor was SHOOTING OFF FIREWORKS this past weekend.  So, yeah, it's all just a little bit scary, even with no fires actually near my home.

Here's a great story on what's going on here in Washington.

3 of our Dragon Con group dropped out, effectively doubling the hotel price for the rest of us a week before the con (I'm now on the hook for nearly $500 instead of $225 (we had hoped to have 10 people in 2 rooms, now we have 6--meaning we can't all fit in one room but there aren't enough to make two affordable), though thankfully my friends with better jobs than mine are letting me pay the difference later).

A shitty cap to a shitty week with depression trying to eat me and being basically told that I can never get promoted at my job, because no one can be considered for a "detail" (temporary promotion) required to get a legit promotion without being certified on one type of case that our office handles, and nobody hired in the last five years will be trained on it because little enough of the work comes in that it's no longer cost-effective to train new people.

Our wedding weekend has been nothing but a comedy of errors and a great deal of tumult.

1) My wife had $200 and her driver's license stolen from the venue as we were decorating on Friday night. We are now stressed out and worried about just being able to board our cruise on Monday.

2) We misplaced our marriage license, so I am going to have to scramble to get another copy when we return which is a very fixable problem.

3) We paid for 100 guests after increasing it from 50 and had maybe 50 show up to the wedding. We paid an additional $800 for the 100 guests and will probably not see that money prorated back to us.

4) We forgot to get our cake top back from the venue, so my bride drove back 45 minutes to get it. On the way back home she got popped by a state trooper in a speed trap for a $250 ticket. Getting popped by a cop that camps out at speed traps like that is the absolute worst.

All in all this weekend has been a negative swing of $1250 and there is a real possibility we will not be able to board a cruise tomorrow.

Kindle's kind of fucking suck. And Amazon has the worst customer service department. Turning my goddamn Kindle Fire off and on over and over again isn't fixing the fucking problem of it turning itself off and on when it's at 95% power and I'm trying to read for more than 5 minutes at a time. Neither is telling me my Kindle is out of warranty and that the only thing you're willing to do to replace your shitty product is to offer me something that costs twice as much as what I currently have.

Quick update on house stuff:

Tore up inside walls. Got rid of insulation. Found termite damage (knew about that. We've been dealing with it. It's not major). Found animal droppings (fun surprise but no huge worry). Insulation was miscolored. Wood was not heavily. Area under carpet was damaged enough we need new carpet down there. Fine. No crack in the cinderblock part of the foundation.

Got an engineer to come. $300. Fine. He said there were no major structural issues and the foundation was not in that bad shape after all, that the crack wasn't nearly as big a deal as it seemed, and that the biggest problem by far was the water. What we needed to do was redirect it. He thought we could dig out the garden patch/dirt on the side that had been leveled out over the years and redirect it to the side of the house on our own and dig down and put on the black rubber stuff, or the stuff you roll on like wall paper. If we stopped the pressure of the water and did a reasonable job putting the black stuff on, it should be fine.

I found this sort of daunting anyway because we suck at this stuff so decided to call in a waterproofing specialist for an estimate. The big issue is that we have to have the basement finished too. We were thinking of selling/upsizing/having another kid maybe as we've gained equity in the house (though everything around us has gone up too). So getting the house in good enough condition to sell is a potential plan (Staying here forever and not having another kid is another). But we'd need money for the down payment and some of that which we have saved will definitely get eaten up by the basement remodeling we need to do. That, however, will at least increase the value of the house a little. So the estimate was over $5000 for digging out, redirecting, putting a pipe in, getting rid of the concrete pad we have in front of the door down there, putting the stuff on the foundation, refilling.

So we're going to have to work that out on our own. I'll get a second estimate just to be sure, but I doubt it'll be much different. Definitely happy that the engineer and the waterproofer both thought we could do okay just by redirecting the water since that could have added 0s to the end of all of this, but we can't cover both that and the basement remodel so we'll have to figure this all out.

Had a very poor evaluation at work last week, like a "do your job better or you're fired" talk, so I know that feel bro.

This escalated today.  Planning to resign tomorrow before I get fired.  Sad face.  I know a few people here have come through brief periods of unemployment recently, hoping I can do the same.

I'll keep this short, because if I go into detail, this post will turn into a 5 paragraph story and I just don't want to do that.

So, long story short - August 31st, that night, my mom intentionally overdosed on Baclofen, a muscle relaxer prescibed for her Multiple Sclerosis. Some 5 or 6 hours later, she's been without oxygen to her brain for far too long. She ended up in the ER, then moved to the ICU, where a day later she had seizures every few hours, and was in a coma more or less. For about a week. For the first few days after it happened, it seemed really dark and gloomy. Then the seizures stopped, and it was just a wait and see scenario, which might be more uncomfortable than anything because you just. don't. know. Well, she's been awake for about 5 days now, and I can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Of course, it's a long road to recovery from here, but at least my mother is awake now and talking and laughing.

New Neighbors:

  • Put their cat in the shared basement during the day. It is aggressive and hisses and spits at me and my wife when we're near it. Sometimes it sits on the stairs to the basement. When I try to inch past it, it claws at my legs. Wife won't get near it so now I do all the laundry.
  • They also put their cat out in the back yard all night. It does the same thing there. It really hates my dog (a wheaten terrier) and will hiss and spit at Ollie, so now he won't go in the back if he sees it. Because he's timid.

For the cat, take a water bottle with you every time you go to the basement and spritz the cat in the face.

It turns out this just angers the cat, who has gotten increasingly aggressive. As in, if it's in the backyard, and I start walking into the backyard from upstairs, it runs at me hissing and spitting. Sick of this shit.
