MJF was replaced by a body double in August and the real MJF never turned face.

The women's booking has been a little Riverdale lately, might as well lean into it.

Bryan Keith sighting!

Strong suspicion Joe wins the title Saturday. I think taking the ROH titles tonight was part of getting everything off of him so he can get surgery. It also makes Joe look like a goof if he relinquishes a belt to focus on another one and doesn't succeed. I would say we pause all the devil stuff until MJF & Cole come back. But now two of them have the ROH tag belts and that's a long time to run with masked dudes without unmasking them.

Also see Edge winning the TNT title but getting 'Edge money in the banked' by whoever wins the pre show battle royal. Gets the belt off of Christian in a satisfying manor. Gets Edge on your title lineage. Gets the belt off of Edge in a way that protects him and shifts the focus off of him being a midcard champion.

So, are we saying a time traveling heel went back in the past to stop his past self from the ramifications of a babyface turn?

Tony watched Lightyear?

either that, or Tony is cloning his superstars in order to create an endless supply of Adam Coles to get around the injury thing

I feel like if anyone liked Sammy Guevara they'd be complaining about him being the worst booked man in wrestling, but it is happening to him so people mostly shrug their shoulders.

it's possible Sammy hasn't officially been the worst booked man in wrestling for long enough for it to sink in..

I don't know who these people are that think Sammy Guevara should be a babyface, but I guess he's trapped on Jericho Island forever.

I don't mind a portion of the product being dedicated to storylines that are a bit more New Yorkish, but I wonder how much of AEW's perceived "off year" has to do with MJF's title reign. Even the good stuff like when Cole was in one piece. I don't pose the question as a hater, I'm just concerned that there's always gonna be a dissonance between it and the rest of the card, even when it's more "alright" than "awful" like tonight. It'll be interesting to see if there's a vibe shift after he drops the belt.

Yeah, alright, I'll buy. It's also a character-appropriate way to do it that puts over Edge's legacy while slyly admitting that the fanbase doesn't really want to see an Edge reign where he goes over a bunch of homegrowns in singles matches.

Thought the opener was really awesome and Kingston/Bryan was of course excellent. Loved the focus on those two matches to kick off each hour and both getting 20+

Another abrupt turn for Sammy but found the overall segment fun/pretty good. Almost thought we were getting a multi-team match for the titles and could sneak in a Sting/Darby reign but an 8 man tag instead.

Loved Skye's Super Code Blue and the post-match chaos ruled. Worlds End came together quick for a good looking card.

Main event starting at the very end of the show was interesting. Sad we couldn't get any unmasking and to see the Better Than You Bay Bay reign come to an end like that. Now I just wanna see the Devil's Masked Men go unidentified on a long run as champs.

I really hope Samoa Joe beats MJF for the AEW World Championship. It's the right call.

This was clearly not the original plan but unfortunately they had to come up with something after Kenny Omega suffered a near fatal illness and this was the best fallback option available.

I thought so at first, but now I'm leaning toward doing something like Flair and Funk at WrestleWar. MJF can overcome the odds to beat Joe. They can do the big reveal beat down MJF and "end his career." MJF goes off and gets his surgery. In the meantime there's a few ways to occupy whoever the Devil winds up being, Adam Page is right there to start him off. MJF comes back for the revenge match at Revolution.

Sammy Guevara has turned more times than The Big Show.

I don't have high hopes for the Devil payoff. These angles rarely end well.

Not happy about Swerve Strickland not going to the finals. I'm glad Kingston got a win back over Danielson, but the way they went with this felt counter-intuitive to booking.

My other issue is they are now pivoting back to Swerve Strickland vs. Keith Lee, a feud and matchup they abandoned for the entire year and completely moved away from. Now they are going back to it? Why? They wouldn't book it at Double or Nothing or all throughout the summer. They moved Keith Lee into a half-assed feud with Shane Taylor. This is the epitome of bad creative.

I'm never, ever going to cheer for Sammy, regardless of alignment. He's just so unlikable!

I called the tournament final! Eddie's got to finish the job now! I'm real curious to see what that belt is going to look like, also.

So Joe isn't the devil but he's working with them or at least has a vested interest in them.

Now that QTV is gone, Harley is safe but WHAT ABOUT NICKY BOY and Solo? We did see Cole Karter backstage.

Also loved seeing that SNAKEMAN was the voice of reason between Adam Copeland and Christian.

Is Kyle O'Reilly cleared?  I wouldn't mind ReDragon being revealed as ROH tag champs, if anything to keep pressure on breaking Cole/MJF eventually?

The other masked man, now a new ROH tag champ, sure as hell reminded me of O'Reilly. The other one I couldn't get a handle on, but yeah, there could be something Fishy about him, for sure!

@Lawful Metal I thought FTR accepted the challenge on Collision, after the Garcia v Brody King match! Maybe they just forgot the graphic? Let's hope so!

Give us FTR vs HOB, dammit!

also, slight change of heart for Joe from "I will protect you to prevent you from making excuses" to "I will beat you down 3 days before the match"

I really liked seeing Joe back on track as a killing machine but agree that the story they did tonight really should have been told over the course of 2-3 weeks, probably starting with the fakeout tag match weeks ago that never happened because MJF was down in back. Definitely a little weird rhythmically, but I didn't hate it.

This was a really good installment, loved the triple threat - I'm a little bummed Swerve didn't go over but Kingston/Mox is gonna be awesome on PPV (plus we get that Swerve/Lee match we've been waiting on for ~2 years since they dropped the tag titles). The historical stuff in the video package for both on the upcoming countdown show ought to be pretty sweet. That Kingston/Danielson match was friggin nuts, man. I still can't believe shit like this is on cable every week.

Say what you will about the use of tourneys as a booking crutch or whatever, but the CC has definitely been a nice recalibration of things IMO. Very much hoping we do this every year. It's a nice companion to the Owen Hart being in May/June too, so you've got one every sixish months.

Slightly off topic: Thinking of these both as mini-KOTRs, if the PPV calendar continues expanding in '24, I hope AEW can find a way to increase the importance of the Casino Battle Royale to make it into more of a Rumble-level match. You've already got the Face of the Revolution Ladder Match as the MITB analogue, and Blood and Guts certainly has the juice (no pun intended) to be a standalone PPV event of its own like War Games. The Royal Rampage they do every year to take advantage of the two rings is dope as hell and one of the highlights of the year IMO - maybe if B&G becomes a PPV, that could open the show.

They had 'The Faceless' become tag-team champions in Progress in black masks way back when - that segued into The Origin, who tbh were actually overlooked as top-tier heels because of the Jimmy Havoc run. GYV, Nathan Cruz and f'n Mastiff, Khan pays for 'Turn The Page'...and it would probably actually work better than whatever they actually have planned!
