August 2023 Wrestling Discussion

I feel like “called up too soon”’ only works as an excuse for so long. Yeah, that might explain why your initial run flopped, but after you’ve spent YEARS working a full-time main roster schedule, during which you’ve had the opportunity to work with and learn from the greatest collection of talent on Earth, if you still stink, it’s just a “you” problem. You just don’t get wrestling and you never will.

Look, I have plenty o’ problems with the WWE product, but the roster ain’t one of them. For the last 10 years, no one has stockpiled more world class talent than them.

Just look through Lacey’s cagematch page and check out the absolutely insane list of people she had the opportunity to work with during her WWE/NXT career. Extended house show loops with Becky, Bayley, Natalya, Kairi, Io, Dakota…Opportunities against Asuka, Athena, Charlotte…I’m leaving plenty of other big names off the list for brevity’s sake.

I can’t think of a better education on how to be a female US TV worker in 2023.

She flunked out.

New wrestling crossword!

Some news on these: I'm switching from putting up one crossword per month, to putting up one crossword every 3 weeks. So that's good news if you like them! (but it's bad news if you greatly despise them)

You are such a king for making these, but I'm scared of ever even trying them. But I see people making insane times on these things, and I'm in awe of them as well! Great job guys!

I look forward to the crossword puzzles every single month and while I don't even touch some of the times posted, I really enjoy having to look stuff up because some of it is stuff i wouldn't have even stumbled onto.  Can't wait for more frequency for them

Appreciate it! (Also I encourage Shartnado to at least take a look at them. I'm always trying to get the click count up)

It took me 21:40, I am sure you can beat that.

Also, @S.K.o.S. misspelled Nova.

One of the big talking points for why Vince blackballed Savage was that he took the Slim Jim's advertising deal with him to WCW.

Watching Superstars in early 95 and the ads, now featuring Nash and Bam Bam, if anything have increased.

Also makes me wonder what they'd have done with him creatively had he returned as rumoured around Survivor Series 96. There doesn't seem to be anything obvious.

If it was $750,000 or whatever the figure is for the deal, I am guessing it was on a money front and not just on the number of ads (with the people replacing Macho Man thrown in so they won't lose the deal altogether). I mean WCW was willing to put the shit on the ringposts, and they also had a good number of Slim Jim ads. Vince HATES in ring advertising.

I mean in my 1994 rewatch, they clearly are not hurting on the sponsor front (lack of blue chip sponsors maybe). I think compared to previous years, I think it's a paltry sum of money. The Domino's thing for SummerSlam that year was big but WWF (according to Bruce) went all out to make sure they appeased Domino's as much as they could. I believe they did the same thing with Taco Bell for Royal Rumble 1997. So IMO, they were getting sponsors but unless it was a show or wrestler pitchman specific deal, it wasn't big enough on the bottom line side.

I mean looking at AEW or WWE now, in order to get the big lump sum, you have to do a specific tie-in.

It’s wild to me that Gun Interactive paid $100k to AEW to promote that video game. It’s not like they’re some huge company or anything. The last game they published that was successful was like, 6 years ago.

TV ads are bought months in advance, so the Nash/Bam Bam ads were likely just quick shot replacement ads to compensate for the fact that Slim Jim had already bought the time but that the WWF didn't want ads with a rival company's wrestler on their programming. The real question would be if they ran anywhere other than WWF programming; I'd guess they didn't.

If Bret’s return had fallen through, I think a 1996 Savage would have been useful slotted in against Michaels and/or Austin.

I also think a 1998 Savage coming in as a heel to be Vince’s corporate champion against Austin would have been fun.

It would have gotten in the way of the Rock being in that role, though.

Savage having WWE-style wandering brawls in 1998 is probably great for his late-stage career, though. I bet he has at least a couple bangers in that role, whereas I'm not sure he has a classic WCW wandering brawl from his time there.

I think he probably settles into the upper-midcard and usurps Jarrett's "staunch misogynist" gimmick. He's probably feuding with Val Venis because Val shot a porno with Gorgeous George or something like that.

That match he had on one of the PPVs with Crush that was NHB or something? I remember renting the show as a kid and thinking it was really cool. Wonder if it holds up.

The match from Mania X? No, that was awful. Plus, the finish was not only goofy and implausible, but screwed up.

IMO I dunno if Savage was still physically up to it in 1998. By 1998, he's coming hard on other people with his elbow cause his hip is fucked up. I think the matches with DDP in 97 are sort of the last vestiges of Macho Man.

I do think though there is some correlation that is likely just a big coincidence that in early 1998 when the NWO friction started and they start billing Randy up as the most dangerous man in wrestling. Obviously, you have Shamrock on the other channel using a similar moniker but you also have the rise of SCSA. That whole thing started like a month or so before Austin becomes WWF champion for the first time. If you find a time machine and get ICW/Memphis era psycho Macho Man vs. Steve Austin in 1998, that's a license to print money.

I need to double-check this - I'm in spring of '98 now - but Savage is still moving okay in early '98. That Savage could do it. IIRC, once the calendar ticks over to 1999, it's like the guy was super-washed all at once.

That Crush match at WM X isn't any good, but for whatever reason, it holds a special place in my heart. That finish is also incredibly dumb; it reminds me of the Foley/Rock Halftime Heat finish with the forklift in terms of utter silliness.

Savage is out for about a year with the knee injury (that he worked for several weeks before they did the beatdown injury angle in the Savage/DDP Nitro cage match) and then shows back up on all the PEDs. So you're probably around the time he gets hurt, but he was laboring or not doing much in certain matches before that.

Now that said, the man is in his mid 40s and a good portion of his career (especially early on) involved a lot of physicality and required a ton of agility. You cannot be the same guy you were in your late 20s/early 30s at that time when you're 45 or 46.

I liked that WM X match, but it has the terrible legacy of setting the precedent of WWE Texas death matches not ending when one guy is beaten until unconscious, but instead defeated by being ensnared in a Rube Goldberg machine set up by their opponent
