2015 RING OF HONOR DISCUSSION THREAD

Recommended Posts

So...guess what it's time for? ROH TV REVIEW HATE IT SUCKAS.

Opening tag was meh.Way too spotty for my tastes. Maria still looks like a porn star. This makes me uncomfortable. But the. Again she was in WWE so te difference between Porn Star and Mid-2000's Diva isn't much. Don't ever put her on commentary again.

Six man was meh. There were three tags before anyone even locked up and I rage quit. Actually I didn't. My first reaction was "Hey, Caprice Coleman! I used to love him in Wildside." Then Prince Nana was on commentary and it made me happy because Nana is awesome. This was okay. It was mostly a showcase for Moose and I felt he performed well. Cheeseburger is not bad but God damn man...get a better name. I actually think there would be money in a Moose-Cheeseburger feud. The only other thing I have to ask...because they mentioned this on commentary...is Silas Young's gimmick that he's homophobic? They mentioned how he's a real man. And that he didn't like people like Dalton Castle. I assumed I was just reading too much into it but I'm not sure on recent story lines so I'm not sure if they actually have gone that route.

I have to say, I think BJ Whitmer is awesome. His delivery was fucking fantastic. And hell it got me I treated in Steve Corino so it must have worked.

Main event was okay. ACH and Fish put on a good match.

The only other thing I have to say is this. I liked Terminal 5 as a TV filming spot. I know some people might yell about production values. But it gives it a "Underground" type feel. Like studio wrestling but in modern day.

Anyways. This show was way better than some of the other episodes I've watched.

The ratings for the show haven't been that good and given the way the TV is set up it really shouldn't be.  The network doesn't do much advertising of it and the show is treated like Destination America is an after thought.

Watched this week's ROH

-First match was pretty boring.  I don't understand why Michael Bennett does so many spears when they look pretty shitty.  Seriously, why do so many guys do spears when like 4 of them haven't sucked in history (Goldberg, Big Show, Reigns, Monty Brown, I think, had a good one, too).  This was not very interesting.

-The 6 man was actually, against all odds, pretty entertaining, especially in light of the fact I got increasingly annoyed with the first four introductions: "Aw man, Caprice Coleman kinda bores me...aw Brutal Bob sucks...Ugh, Silas Young...Oh no Cheeseburger's the worst!"  But Castle and Moose are both pretty fun (Though, going back to my previous thought, Moose's spear kinda sucked) and Castle's dead-lift German of Moose was really amazing.  With how popular he is right now, I don't think it would be a terrible idea to have Castle be the one to take the TV title off of Lethal.

-God, do I dislike BJ Whitmer.  Then you get my interest by promising Kolby Korino in a gauntlet match against a series of fat and fatter guys, then have angry dad Steve Corino storm the ring and the match doesn't happen.  Then you further irritate me by replacing Steve Corino (Who kinda sucks on commentary) with Nigel McGuinness (Who really sucks on commentary).

-Main event did nothing for me.  Found it pretty tedious, in all honesty.  In fact, without scrolling up the last couple posts, I honestly can't remember who Bobby Fish wrestled.  Oh wait, it was ACH and, for some reason, they thought the best match structure was to have ACH take it to the mat.  His high spots are good, but I'm still not that big of a fan of him.  Bobby Fish is a guy with an awesome look, decent charisma, but his matches do nothing for me whatsoever.

-Lastly, it's really awkward that they tape these shows before the PPV, but run these shows after the PPV has aired and acknowledge it ("Make sure to order the replay!") but not speak to anything that happened on the show.  It means your last show of the cycle, that airs on the same night as the PPV, is usually just a throwaway show, and when you only have, on average, four TV shows in a month to build angles, you can't really afford to throw one away.

I have to wonder for those that are praising the 60 minute match if they saw it on iPPV or live.  I can honestly say it was exhausting live.  If they trimmed it down to a 35-40 minute match at most they would have had an outstanding match.  I don't know what happened here because 60 minute matches were very common years ago.  And people were into the idea of long matches in ROH's early years too.  Not sure where things went wrong from then to now, but it just didn't work here.  I'm cool with taking time to let things sink in, but you have to do more in between to make me care.  I'm a big fan of both (Lethal more than Roddy) but they just didn't accomplish what they hoped to do.

The whole KRD angle sure died a quick death. Why not have Sabin come out with The Addiction at least? They played it up as this big angle (showing the damn video for what felt like forever) and then it just went away. Even if they kept Sabin in a non in-ring capacity it'd be fine.

Moose is billed at 6'5" and 295, so he's probably legit 6'3 250 but still, there must be witchcraft at work as it's the only logical explanation for how someone that big can have a spear that shitty.

I thought Terminal 5 looked very cool and "ROH's tapings look bush league" has gone from legit complaint to dumb talking point.  Their lighting has gotten worlds better and their HD looks pretty swell.  Meltzer saying no American fans will go for any wrestling that doesn't look like WWE is a pretty pointless argument, too, since only WWE can afford to look like WWE anyway.  Besides, the way WWE looks is pretty bland and played out.  I wish WWE would switch it up and shoot in different looking places, but that's KD for ya.

I thought Terminal 5 looked really good as well.  ROH is the best wrestling show in America right now.  When it comes to wrestling, they are way ahead of WWE main roster stuff and much better than NXT.  They have greatly improved thier production, and it seems like all the iPPV problems are in their past.

Wrestling is, was, and always will be a niche product except for the one time every 15 years when it bubbles up to the mainstream.  Chasing people who don't like it and would only care about it if it looked like WWE's bright and shiny big top production is a losing proposition anyway.  WWE is chasing off its own fans in droves with its bland offering.

And come on.  I've seen some bush league-looking venues.  My favorite company only runs shows in a Reseda American Legion post, with 80s stereo speakers on the wall and a disco ball on the ceiling.  ROH does not look bush league.

I was thinking the same thing today while I was listening to Taz's Podcast from monday and he brought up how the WWE is aways seeking to gap the casual fans but the booking says otherwise. Either way Im glad to see ROH doing well, I bet if ROH was on Destination America only the ratings on that channell would be way higher because it would be first run instead of a week behind. I really would like to know what the ratings are combined with the DA numbers. Even and their lowest on DA their numbers have to be bigger than TNA Impact

I wonder why they can't just air the next episode instead of running the current one for the billionth time.  Is it a deal with Sinclair?  I'm sure it's an obvious answer, but if they had first run of the new episode that might help.

That's not what Destination America paid for.  They're paying to air episodes on their network after they air on Sinclair affiliates.
