2015 VIDEO GAME CATCH-ALL THREAD

Elite:Dangerous is a space sim game released last month that is a psuedo remake of a classic game (Elite) where you're a space pilot, almost like a space sim sandbox, you can be a miner, a trader (taking goods from one system to another for profit), an explorer (someone actually went all the way to the galactic Rim to explore) a pirate, a bounty hunter, etcetera. You can play in an offline mode, where the only people you'll interact with are NPC's, but played online, you can be ambushed by your fellow players.. it's rather forgiving of death (you lose your ship, but can buy it back for a reduced price, etcetera).

And it's... hella graphical. Super graphical.I mean, this was one of the games the Occulus Rift was MADE for.

Here's a video of it.

GOOD NEWS!  The PS4 will finally get an app for streaming media off your PC.

BAD NEWS!  It requires a subscription.

I don't really understand the need for this on PS4.  If you want something on TV, there's tons of other way to do that.  Chromecast, Amazon stick, etc. do the job fine.  And there's normally excellent free ways to do that.  But I had Plex for a time and is a great service, just not sure it's worth a subscription just for PS4.

Well, it's partly because that stuff was built into the PS3, so this is a feature that was removed from the newer system. And it's also partly that maybe you don't want to buy yet another device to do something that the device you already have could easily do.

So...has anyone played Dying Light? I'm curious to see if it's good or not. Not like I need a new game since I'm addicted to Destiny, got back into MLB: The Show and have Alien Isolation collecting dust.

I bought Dying Light during Gamestop's "We Dun Fucked Up On The Season Pass" sale they had on Tuesday.

I'm not quite sure where to post this, but Monty Oum, the animator at RoosterTeeth, has been hospitalized and it don't sound good. Burnie Burns posted this:

It is with great regret that I must inform you that our co-worker and our dear friend, Monty Oum, has had a medical emergency. He is currently hospitalized in critical care and it is not known if he will recover. He is receiving the best medical care possible and is surrounded by both family and friends who love him very much. While we wanted you to know as soon as possible, we also have the utmost respect for Monty's privacy and we hope you will understand and share in that respect.

Monty is a tremendous talent who has accomplished so much in his young life. He has an amazing creative ability and the drive to put it to use. That is a rare combination and we are proud to have shared in it. We expect that this news will be shocking to most of you and very difficult to process. It has been for many of us as well. Our hearts are with Monty, his wife Sheena and his brothers & sisters. They will need your good thoughts, your prayers, whatever kindness you have to offer.

A fund has been been established to assist Monty's family with his medical expenses. If you wish to show your support in that fashion, please visit http://www.gofundme.com/MontyandSheena.

We love you, Monty.

Monty Oum has passed away

Our friend, inspiration and co-worker Monty Oum passed away yesterday afternoon at 4:34 PM surrounded by people who loved him very much. Ten days ago Monty suffered a severe allergic reaction during a simple medical procedure that left him in a coma. Although he fought bravely, his body was not able to recover. During his time in the hospital he was well cared for and never in pain at any time.

Monty is survived by his wife Sheena, his father Mony, his brothers Woody, Sey, Chivy and Neat, and his sisters Thea and Theary, as well as a countless number of fans and friends. We were so proud to be a part of his life and we will miss him greatly.

Your generosity during the hours after the public statement on Friday will help his family deal with the costs of his care and his passing. You made an incredible difference during a difficult time and we cannot thank you enough.

As for honoring Monty, we will do that in our own way. In lieu of flowers or gifts, we ask that you simply do something creative. Use your imagination to make the world a better place in any way that you can. If you know Monty like we do, then you know he would certainly be doing that if he were able to.

Monty was 33 years old.

We love you, Monty.

I'm playing Saint's Row 2. The default button set up means that if you want to do drive-by killings, you either need to park the car before opening fire, or have two right thumbs. Luckily, option 2 button set-up is the same as GTA.

This game is so old that it doesn't have trophies. So it's basically in between GTA San Andreas and GTA4 technology wise - I know the franchise goes a bit wierd in later games, but this really is just a GTA clone in many ways. And it's taking shots - there's an early Casino Heist mission where the geeky guy comes up with an elaborate plan to rob the Casino by doing exactly what CJ does in San Andreas, but then they decide it'd be easier to walk in the front door and shoot everyone. So they do that.

This game seems to be very sure on what gun it wants me to use on what mission. And it's bloody annoying.

I loved SR2, liked SR3 and 4. If I were to go back to 2 now in 2015, I'd probably get fed up with it quickly, but I liked the story better (esp as a prelude to the Red Faction series) and the wider variety of wacky side games, the generally larger city and the broader feeling of freedom (and the fact that each gang had its own entire arc that was a good 6-8 hrs of gameplay unto itself, instead of so much of the "story" being "do the first mission or two of each minigame type.")  SR1 isn't last-last gen, it was a 360 exclusive that came out in the first year of the console though. I've never played it.
