2015 VIDEO GAME CATCH-ALL THREAD

I beat Demons Souls and got pretty far in Dark Souls before my old fatty PS3 died and I thought normal difficulty was fine. It is kind of similar to those games in that there is little in the way of tutorials or hand holding, basically you have to figure out how items work, enemies react, etc. There were parts that were frustrating at first but once you figure out certain game mechanics everything clicks. It was a tough game, I died plenty of times but it never felt cheap to me. There was a patch that put in a novice difficulty mode but I never used it so I can't say how much easier it makes the game.

This is spot on. It's extremely challenging but it's a rewarding challenge in the end, one that's exhilarating and constantly asking you to get out of sticky situations with just enough tools to pull it off. When I die, it's often because I screwed up and I learn from the mistake. Pretty much exactly what I would want from this type of game. It's a visceral survival horror thriller and that primordial feel of the hunt is exactly the stuff an Alien game should play up.

The main thing I need to do other than stop hiding in fucking lockers like a bitch (thanks, Neil!) is use the various distraction bombs better. I have them, so why not use them when I'm 1 on 1 with that slimy bitch?

FTL is 2 bucks on Amazon right now.  If you don't own it you really, really should.

Anybody have opinions of Infamous: Second Son?  It's only $20 and I'd like something to pad out my PS4 library.

So, I finally got murdered by the xenomorph in Alien Isolation and once I popped that gruesome cherry, I've found it much easier to work around the alien. Kotaku's tip guide for the game sums that up rather nicely:

Make Peace With Your Death

If you play Alien: Isolation, you're going to die. A lot. Get used to it. The first time you take on the alien, it can be helpful to simply walk out in front of it, make a loud noise, and let it kill you. Get that first one out of your system.

I'm playing on PC and leaning back in lockers when it comes in close contact with me. I think the game said to click RMB when leaning back in a locker to hold your breath. Tried it twice, twice I was ripped out of the locker and murdered in the face. Seems like that's a bit of an issue as the alien may have either heard me (the second time it just walked straight into the room and yanked open the locker door) or knows my tendency (doubtful as I hadn't been killed before this last save). The tip I'm reading is to just hide under desks rather than use lockers. Will give that a try - but I wanted to avoid it after seeing footage of the alien snatching suckers out from under desks a few times.

It really is tremendous. Does your laptop not come close to the minimum requirements? While it is a super gorgeous game, I would think you could probably play it on a low resolution with the options turned all the way down on most modernish PCs because it's usually only one character on the screen at a time (usually the alien staring you in the face with its mouth open, lol). I was going to say something about its availability on 360/PS3 but those machines are still in the $150-250 range... Greasy!

I just checked out the minimum requirements and they're 1GB of VRAM and 4GB of RAM. That's actually pretty hefty. Shyit.

Thing with my laptop is mainly the integrated graphics card is an anchor for the new wave AAA games, but those cards are not as terrible as some people think. Decent baseline thought process is that if it's a PS3-era game like Skyrim or Left for Dead 2 I can run it, but PS4-powered stuff is almost certainly beyond me. Beyond that if a game doesn't specifically state "this won't run on an integrated card" I have been good to go every time. (This is a 2010 laptop so since consoles are basically shitty laptops that look way cooler that's about right.)

Well, that and I played Skyrim for like 1000 hours and eventually I fucked up my fan once already. Working on a second now.

Just as big a problem for me is my current shitty internet plan. That DL size is totally beyond my current capabilities. These new 35 GB games are not happening for me. Which is probably one reason I've steered into a lot of lo-res/throwback games the last year. Thankfully there's a lot of really good ones floatin' around.

Speaking of which Duke Nukem 3D is the only thing in the current Humble Bundle I can find any motivation for. We'll see how long that nostalgia lasts post-install but for now the will to kick ass and chew gum is strong.

I know you're not big into consoles but have you pondered saving up for a PS4/XBONE? That way you could get discs instead of downloads and still play AAA games made in the past three or four years. Mind you, in hindsight I probably should've held off on my PS4 purchase until this past November (when actual deals were available) or later this year when there's a shitstorm of great games on the way. It's been pretty barren for great exclusive titles. Most of the games I've played thoroughly, I could've done so on me pc.

I thought Alberta had super fast, cheap internet? I must be crazy.

I thought hard about buying one just for GTA V but at the end of the day the dollars to common sense ratio just doesn't add up anymore. I need a real job that pays more money than your kids can count.

Alberta has good internet if you live in Edmonton or Calgary but if you live "35 minutes from Vegreville on the Bumblefuck Ranch" you get into some weird options.

Having said that I should really switch over to Xplornet and actually be able to download a giant file without weeping. Actually having to track bandwidth useage has become, other than no cash, my most aggravating first world problem.

That all makes perfect sense.

Best moment of my Isolation playthrough just happened: Three jabronis are conversing how they're just waiting for somebody to save them. I guess one either hears me shuffling around in the room next to me or sees me through the glass. Two of them enter the room to find me, waving guns about acting all hard n shit. Then I hear loud footsteps from the other direction, as the door at the other end of the room opens (just as I find cover under a hospital bed) and the alien takes out both of them RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME! It gets even better as the third guy who stayed behind was later heard making some noises in the distance, I hear the alien jump into the vents behind me and I watch on the tracker as one very fast blip speeds towards the stationary blip and as they meet up a gun is fired, an alien screams, and a man screams. lololol.

Destiny is the other title i'm playing, working my way through it online with a friend of mine. Gotta say i'm a little underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong, its a good game, it looks great and plays great but for something that was supposed to be this epic title with hours upon hours of playtime it sure does feel like it will be over quickly. Its not bad, just not what i was expecting.

Totally agree. I was pretty into Destiny when I first got it (though that might have had as much to do with the fact that I got the white Destiny bundle and, well, it was the only game I had), and it's fun and everything. But they should have put a sticker on it that says "We put absolutely zero thought into the single-player portion of this game."

I still don't like the multi-player as much as say, Mass Effect 3, either. Probably because ME3 is co-op rather than competitive and I don't necessarily have the time to invest into Destiny's multi-player to get to the point where I'm not just cannon fodder.

If you were playing on X-Box One, you could have record that for all our viewing pleasure, haha.

The side story game, Infamous: First Light will be free later today. Personally I adore Second Son, but the freebie might give you an idea of whether it's for you or not

I forgot about that.  I played it a bit last night and enjoyed it.  I'll probably end up picking up Second Son as well.

And I really, really like The Swapper.  Maybe my favorite puzzle platformer since Braid.

X-Box owners are using their console to watch porn more than Playstation owners.

Important study here: www.polygon.com/2015/1/7/7510259/which-console-owners-are-browsing-the-most-porn

Probably because the PS4 browser can't play flash movies, so the tube sites are useless.

Footage of Playstation Now in action from CES:

They show Bioshock Infinite and Street Fighter 4.  Both look good to me and seem to play well.

A few questions I have about the subscription that haven't really been answered by Sony:

1) Does your DLC carry over based on your account? I know I have the BioShock Infinite Season Pass (for example) so would I then be able to access it instantly?

2) What about games with shut down multiplayer servers (Overlord II)? Even if i wanted to play games like that and Platinum the game through PSNow, I can't due to shutdown servers. When games begin to shut down multiplayer servers, will I be able to host my own private server through PSNow account or am I SOL?

3) If I am playing a game with multiplayer through PS Now, I highly suspect it will almost unplayable due to lag (basically you are connecting through PSN to PS Now and to the multiplayer server unless it's one and the same). Games that use other services (like Origin) may have a tougher time. I can't imagine SFIV or KZ3 matches holding very well through the service. Any ideas what Sony plan to do to help players with that?

4) Judging by most online only games or online heavy games recently, is Sony even prepared for the volume of people connecting to their service? They could barely handle a bunch of douchebag kids over Christmas doing a DDOS attack.

My best guesses:

1) I seriously doubt it.

2) You are SOL.

3) Lag is supposedly not an issue.

4) I imagine there will be initial hiccups and then the problem disappears quickly.
