I wonder if there had been better TV build these house shows would have drawn better leading to a WM8 main event?

The WWF's attempt at Hogan vs. Flair not drawing well was probably more a sign of the times rather than the build. A few weeks ago, I happen to stumble upon some of the 1992 house show attendance numbers. I am going to hazard a guess the reason why the 1992 numbers look absolutely atrocious is they started to atrophy sometime in 1991 or maybe earlier. Hogan vs. Flair sometime in 1987-89 probably would have done amazing business even in markets that wouldn't recognize Flair as a big star. Late 1991...not so much.

Wonder which promotions’ fans will be crying more on social media about two wrestlers in different companies posting video of them together with their respective titles.

Those AI generated posts on FB about wrestling lately are so freaking bad.

Also, the post Gulf War recession probably had an impact on people having the spending money to afford going to major wrestling shows.

Also, launching those matches on the West Coast was so odd to me. I went to their MSG match and thought it was a decent crowd. Really, they should've started in Baltimore and moved it down the Carolinas down to Georgia first (or started on the South and moved it North)

Chicago also had a good crowd. I went to WWF and WCW shows all throughout college, but this was the time that I had to bring my friends.

But then most fans would have Booed Hogan and Cheered Flair.

True but once Vince sees the revenue he would take in, I don't think he'd care

Jesus Hulk was so god damn roided out he began to lose his butt crack. Totally explains the push up gag with his ankles in No Holds Barred after all these years.

Not only the recession but the WWF's exploitation of the war caused a lot of casual viewers to turn away, then add on American Gladiators becoming a huge hit and depending on the market Superstars had to run head to head with Gladiators or got bumped to a less desirable time slot.

the ref appeared to be the most reluctant person to actually touch the ground

also gotta note that Cactus Jack's sunset flip onto the floor was really one of the stupidest bumps that he did regularly.. I'm kinda amazed Mick is as good as he appears to be online considering all the stuff he was doing regularly 25/30 years ago

I was working at Marvel during the Hogan/Flair series. Even with free comics that recession had me cut back my monthly MSG shows. Welll... in hindsight that had more to do with visits to Show World*

*if you aren't from the greater NY Tri-State area, I do not expect you to know what Show World was... but I'm sure you can figure it out

Without looking it up.  I’m going with what podcast lore would refer to as a “Shoe Show”.

NY Post, which is actually good with media scoops, is reporting that Joe Tessitore will be joining the WWE announcing team later this summer, but will also remain with ESPN.

Article suggests he will be paired with Barrett and Graves.

Nick Khan was his agent at point, so such a deal makes sense.

I mean he is a huge name in ESPN so there is that.  Although I don't recall him being actually good when calling sports.  Maybe I am getting him confused with someone.   Lately the history of 3rd man outside of the wrestling bubble hasn't been that great.  Well except Pat McAfee but he was a huge wrestling mark anyway

The worse thing about this is that it allows Graves to be more like his older heel character.  Frankly he was too busy to do his shtick and it was very refreshing

I think my biggest wrestling dream match right now that can't happen is Bryan Danielson vs. Gunther. Bryan Danielson's chest goes red quick when chopped by Roderick Strong and Eddie Kingston, it would be something else vs. Gunther.

Mount Rushmore choppers: Kenta Kobashi, Gunther, Ric Flair and Roderick Strong.

Speaking of Bryan Danielson, Roderick Strong and chops. I always remember this from Danielson vs. Strong at ROH Vendetta 2005, the best Danielson/Strong match:

Bryan Danielson chops Roderick Strong to boos.

Danielson: "What? You were cheering for his chops."

Fan: "Your chops suck!"

Laughter.

Bryan Danielson: "Fuck off!"

More laughter.

when Gunther was Walter and Danielson had a buzz cut.

In all the years he's been doing PBP for boxing (currently for Top Rank and before that the last iteration of Friday Night Fights replacing Bob Papa), I've never been that fond of Tess for some reason. Maybe it's just his voice. Ironically, the guys I would have above him on the boxing PBP list already had stints in WWE in Todd Grisham and Mauro Ranallo. Problem is that list is only 3 or 4 guys. So he's either second to last or last. I can only think of one legendary call he had with boxing and that was Darnell Wilson's KO of Emmanuel Nwodo. That was his Jim Ross KotR 98 "As God as my witness, he's broken in half!" call. That was SEVENTEEN years ago.

He's okay calling college football. Nothing mind blowing.

I will say though in terms of being a company man, Tess is your guy.

I never had an issue with him calling FNF, I quite liked the pairing of him and Atlas. No idea how that work would translate to WWE unless he's secretly a fan.

Never been able to stand Mauro calling anything. He always has his volume turned up to 11 so its where do you go?

Holy shit Gunther vs Danielson would be grotesque.
