NXT SEASON 8 THREAD

RIPPA

Recommended Posts

No one ever called The Rock or Cena Olympic-level wrestlers and they obviously did okay for themselves.

But they just know how to do all of those little things in matches that keep fans involved consistently -- Cena yelling when hitting a move in his comeback, The Rock's huge dramatic pause before delivering The People's Elbow, The Rock's little hitch to signal The Rock Bottom's coming, etc.

I sort of think Titus in a lot of ways has a good comparison in Mark Henry. Mark's also a ridiculously talented athlete (dude dunked in celebrity dunk contests, on top of his superhuman strenth) and has an obvious charisma. But it took Mark a really long time to get it all together and now he's an all-time great worker. Mark explained what took him so long to get there in one of those radio interviews -- it was a combination of a bad attitude, not taking the profession seriously as he was partying a lot, etc. But then he figured out what really worked for him, with his trash talk and tweaking his in-ring style a bit.

I thought the match against Sami was good. I think it was Titus's best match ever. But it wasn't some sneaky MOTYC, which Sami's a specialist at giving. It was a really solid, but completely forgettable match.

I just really want Titus to become something huge. I really enjoy watching him work. A lot of that is because it's interesting to break him down compared to the best bigman workers right now in Henry and Cesaro. His flaws are really interesting, because really hardcore wrestling fans can clearly see what he needs, and I think it's pretty natural for us to rot for a guy to get that all together.

Honestly, I like Titus too, and want him to be better.  The only thing he REALLY needs to fix, and it would make the biggest difference in the world, is to look more sure of himself out there.  His execution is fine, but you see these moments where he really seems unsure what to do next.  That comes with experience, but if he can figure that out, he can at least be a solid hand.

It really stood out in this match, because I think he was trying to play the 'I can't keep this scrappy fucker down and it's frustrating' angle, but it comes off as him looking really depressed and down on himself all the time.

Wow was that crowd tired. As for Itami, it seemed to me that he got his bell rung. That, or he was working like he was hurt and it just looked awkward. Only reason why I think it was a work was because Albert or whoever kept referring to how Itami got his bell  rung.

Maybe I'm way out of touch, but Enzo and Cass are horrible. Maybe the hot girl will make them tolerable. I see them getting booed out of the building when they cut their first promo. They don't look cool, they don't act cool, they can't wrestle.

The Rock has been calling people made up baby words since 1997 and still walks on water. They're probably going to be fine.

That was a terrible job by the ref not realizing Kenta was out on his feet. Then he gets double legged after the match and his head bounces off the mat again. That was an ugly scene. Any main roster crowd that would boo Enzo and Cass could fuck off. If just one of those two improve enough in ring to get by in tags they'll be money. Enzo is already a pretty good face in peril. I'd like to see Cass add some muscle, but I could see him being a good hot tag down the road.

If Becky is going to be a metal chick can she at least get some decent music? Really good match between her and Sasha(who imo is the best all around act of any woman in WWE). Titus/Zayn was better than I thought it would be. Titus needs 6 months to a year working with Henry and Big Show. He gets a little lost here and there, but he looks like he's really trying out there.

They're not trying to be cool. They're goofs, and they know it.

I have a theory that some wrestlers become popular because they are acting naturally, which is to say that what they are doing as workers working a gimmick is what comes naturally to them. "Your gimmick should be a part of you magnified" is a not just a tired trope, but a truism in most situations. I think that audiences really like to see people being themselves, coolness or propriety or social conventions or even morality be damned. This realness can be just a part of what makes a wrestler over. Example: Ric Flair - it wasn't merely his ring skills (work and moves), winningness or cool factor that got him over but the fact that you were seeing (part of? like a hologram, each part contains the whole) who he really was, unabashed unashamed unapologetic. It would have been harder to suppress this naturalness, and thereby be even falser, but most people feel that life makes them do that every day. To see a human unfettered and able to really "be themselves" loudly exuberantly and even getting paid for it, makes us happy vicariously. Another example, even moreso: Jimmy "Boogie Woogie Man" Valiant. He had even less of the other factors of RF, but had the naturalness I am talking about as well as the charisma, and also the common man underdog thang going on (mercy!). Even a heel gets over by this, like Capt. Lou Albano. It's not just the extroverted outsiders - even calmer workers get accolades for "being themselves" even if it is exaggerated for the big stage: John Cena, Dory Funk Jr., Billy Robinson. Part it is our striving for "realness" and authenticity in out pop culture and heroes, a fool's quest to be sure. Wrestling is a perfect venue for to showcase these folks. How great was it when you saw The Rock emerge from under the restraints of unnatural gimmicks to let his own personality take over? Eventually that became a performance as well, but that's another pontification.

Anyway, Enzo & Cass have that "damn the torpedoes this is who I am" vibe. It comes from a performer who is doing it for themselves but is presenting it to you. Zayn has this as well. Now there is nothing wrong with a good "artificial" gimmick, like The Vaudevillians (dig them), and that is a difficult skill in itself. Demolition were great and well remembered, but the difference between them and The Road Warriors includes this pet theory. Some people don't care for this Naturalness, they just want to see extraordinary moves or spots or matches, or have other priorities. For me, when I see someone and I say "man, this guy couldn't have been anything BUT a wrestler" it blows my mind. These ultrapersonalities disrupt the Natural Order - they often have to be booked around, not for or with.

More examples: Dusty Rhodes, Abdullah The Butcher, Super Porky, Jerry Lawler, Dick Murdoch, Jim Duggan, Killer Karl Kox, Bad News Barrett. Negative examples (but still over like rover): Randy Orton, Junkyard Dog, Raven, Hulk Hogan. They seem always never really inhabited their gimmick or it was secondary to their charisma. Did you ever see someone with an accessory that's too "big" for them? When the hat/tattoo/jewelry is wearing the person and not the other way around? Sometimes (Raven) the skill of acting the gimmick brings so much attention to the acting part rather than the gimmick part. Think about how sometimes great actors merely bring praise and attention to their acting skills rather than to the roles they are playing.

Fun show overall. Corbin got his little squash in, while the new Wolves/MCMG hybrid team shined brightly against the champs, and holy shit is Carmella ever hot. Her match was short and should've been given her character. Blue Pants getting the Price is Right theme sung to her got a chuckle out of me, as did Renee calling her Kitty Pryde. Charlotte-Becky was very good, with a snappy pace. Everything about this show makes me wish WWE as a whole was booked like it since everything means something. There are three titles and they're all important. There's a clear lower/mid/main event setup, but it feels like everyone can realistically face everyone else. Kidd-Zayn was really good, but a bit short. They still had great chemistry though, and after last week's iffy show, this was a notable step up from that.

I loved that running vertical counter in the Lucha Dragons match. Someone should use that as a sometimes-signature spot that gets nearfalls in big matches on the big show.

I kinda get why Enzo and Cass might be grating to some people, but maaaaan I love them. Also I love Renee for her "This girl looks like Kitty Pryde!" comment when Blue Pants was on her way to the ring.

Also also, Tyson Kidd saying that he'd be ready for a match with Zayn, but first he had to make some calls and check on his cats was the best. Even the crowd chanting "Oui!" when the Legionnaires exploded made me chuckle. This show actually has funny comedy.

Also, that short segment with the Becky Lynch heel turn tease was fantastic and got my hopes up.

Mojo Rawley needs a refreshing, so I'm glad to see that they're going to do that.

I can't say enough about how fantastic Kidd is now in NXT, he has revitilized his character and has taken the MVP spot from Zayn.

Both him and Zayn are filling out the role that Christian had in WWECW; mainstay and posterchild for the main event.

When the time finally comes, the WWE has a potential merch monster on their hands with Enzo/Big Cass. "You can't teach that!!" Shirts, "SAWFT" T-shirts, "Bada Boom, realest guys in the room" shirts, fake Enzo hairdo hats, et al...
