Part of the problem is that AEW is run by a matchmaker instead of a booker. This criticism is not about “story” so much as it is about build and payoff. I am pretty sure that the management does not think about holding back to mean more in key moments. A blood feud match built around the hidden subtext of Greg bumping like a madman to make his injured friend Dustin look great. The sideways bump into the car, the roof-to-roof elbow drop, and the powerbomb into the windshield were all ugly and slightly-awkward in the best way. And Chuck bladed his arm! When I think of the signature AEW gimmick match, it's that, Blood & Guts, Anarchy in the Arena and the Texas Death Match. Yeah but he's gonna slot into that Kommander-esque "guy in multimans" spot and lose more than he wins, so that ppv title match likely ain't in the cards. It should be as he's awesome but being the opponent in a name guy's showcase return match likely is about the best spot he's gonna get in the foreseeable future. Also I'm gonna be the dissenting voice and say that Claudio/Swerve was only okay and it was because they strung it out a bit too long given what was an unbuilt foregone conclusion match. About two minutes before the finish the crowd was quiet and you felt the energy in the room drop, they took things one trip around the block too much and missed the peak. It's a shame as both "standing on Claudio's shoulders" spots were swell (I saw him do that live with I think Sydal almost 20 years ago in ROH live and it blew my mind) but hey, them's the breaks sometimes. You'd think they'd have remembered how to mic the damn place after all that experience. But yeah. I had to split by the time the Mox/Hobbs injury match started up and I don't think I want to return to that. Collision will be duly watched however. I never wanted that team to break up, but if it has to be done, at least we're getting killer matches out of it. (And look, the Bucks are gonna run outta challengers eventually, especially with the division being split somewhat thin with guys also doing Trios division stuff - the 2025 reunion hug will hit). I guess my only criticism, similarly to the Santana/Ortiz 'blowoff' a while back, is that I wish it were on Dynamite so it was seen by a wider audience (or even just opened Collision right after Swerve's promo - I think a bloody parking lot brawl like that would've surely snagged some remaining NBA eyeballs, or had heads turning in whatever bar left TNT on, or however you want to put it.) 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If this wasn’t the highlight of the week it was Don Callis admiring Barretta’s work from the monitors. Yes! The Women’s Division had a pretty good week. Mina and Toni v Jay were both terrific fun. So great to see Toni figuring out how to balance the character. Jay’s getting consistent and quietly preparing herself for the next level for when it arrives. Deonna v Thunder was perhaps the strongest of all. Deonna embracing her natural heel feels so right. Good Deonna/Thunder twitter promos that nobody will see. I really liked Willow’s celebration. I forgive her for the camera miscue and focus on her very good mic work. Things are slowly starting to feel right with Mercedes heeling. The Casino Gauntlet provided some fun with all the Ospreay combinations. So into Ospreay v Roddy. I loved the Ospreay/Callis/Fletcher promo following. Don Callis is the quintessential example of making the most of your minutes. I loved him reprimanding Ospreay for not using the Tiger Driver and Fletcher for losing. So great! Big week for Swerve v Fletcher/Claudio. The Claudio match in particular – a bit unfortunate it got no build prior the show. Jericho/Bill promo provided the lifting of a great weight. Heel Jericho is totally acceptable and sometimes kinda awesome, babyface Jericho never. I sense this could be big for Bill. Sad night for Hobbs v Mox. A bit unfortunate that they couldn’t find some time to promote the returns of Rush and Fenix, but pleased to have both back in the fold. Fenix v Mortos was sensational. Mortos is currently one of the best in the world. The presentation may be too goofy to get behind with a push, but it won’t get in the way of him having weekly TV classics. Nice debut from the Grizzled Young Veterans v Acclaimed. Bowens/Caster have looked a lot better in tags over the past couple weeks. Great to see Billy back on the floor. Garcia/Shibata v Taylor/Moriarty was excellent minus the ridiculously lengthy double teaming. Glad Nigel called it out. I really wish they’d let Daddy Magic join Collision regularly. Schiavone’s best as part of a trio. Let’s get STP a couple wins, no? Shibata seems to be getting some buzz for his Siri promos. Khan/Perry/Bucks angle was very amusing to me. As was Tony bluntly suggesting ‘WWE is the Harvey Weinstein of pro wrestling’ and wearing the neckbrace all around on TV. And quietly on top of all that we got a very fun Top Flight/Andretti v BCG bout. So relieved to have proper defending Trios champions again. White’s incredible talents have really lifted the Asses whom looked great here. Loved the Gunns playing fans spot. Andretti is another quietly ascending star in the making. So consistent. There’s still a need for selling more of the sizzle, but the video packages are becoming consistent. The Switcher and Camera Operators could use to improve. So many hits. So few misses (that aren’t amusing). I’m having a little too much fun to care about the ups and downs of the money metrics. I sense we’ll be okay without my worry about it. Fully agree, but I'll extend a little grace this week - I'm sure the Turner folks are spread thin lately with NBA and NHL playoff assignments. (I guess that makes Daily's kinda like the WCW Disney Nitros when Turner crew were busy with the Olympics in '96 - though I'm sure it's got more to do with TK being in town to do the draft). In my mind, actively being a part of the presentation is basically our duty and role as fans - the folks onscreen play their parts of good guys, bad guys, authority figures, etc., and we should play ours and add to the overall performance. Granted, this usually applies WAY more to live crowds, but I'll be damned if I haven't been at indy shows and yelled out about the heels cheating and the ref doing a bad job and the faces triumphing - it's SO much more enjoyable that way. 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
