To be fair (and I dunno why I am trying to be fair to fucking Jason Whitlock fwiw), SAS is the same way and that's why I am baffled why he's even addressing anything regarding Whitlock. He knows the game. I get it that part of the allure or appeal is he (SAS) will address anyone, but Whitlock has shown he will drag anyone into the dirt cause he has very little to lose. He doesn't have a real fanbase. You might as well be starting a Twitter feud with someone with 3 followers. From what I understand Stephen A., Skip, and pretty much everyone else who is a loudmouthed cartoon character of a sports commentator, are very good to the people around them. I've heard multiple black sports commentators who say that Skip Bayless gave them either valuable advice or an opportunity to be the serious voice of reason when no one else would give them that opportunity. Whitlock is apparently the exact opposite. He's the type of person who will laugh in your face, then turn around and stab you in the back. He is particularly duplicitous to his black colleagues, which is how we get here with Stephen A.

He's actually a really talented columnist, who knows how to push buttons which is most of the job. The problem is everyone else pushed buttons, and then treats people well, but he does the exact opposite. You can get really far in this world being a public asshole, but being a private asshole is a much harder existence.

But you bet you ass Pat's gonna run him out whenever Aaron wants until Disney fires him.

dogwelder
It's the NY Post, so take it with a grain of salt, but it is interesting... ESPN, NFL in advanced talks on agreement that could give league stake in TV giant Quote ESPN and the NFL are in advanced talks that could result in the league taking an equity stake in ESPN, The Post has learned. As part of a potential agreement, Disney-owned ESPN would take control of NFL Media, which includes NFL Network, and the league would receive equity in ESPN. Villanova Grad
50 minutes ago, Zimbra said: The shambling husk of Sports Illustrated appears to be laying off all of their writers. The background is that Arena Group, the company that publishes SI, is still having financial problems and is rumored to have missed payments to SI’s owner, Authentic Brands Group (Authentic bought SI in 2019). Authentic is threatening to revoke the publishing rights from Arena and probably has already begin the process. So… this really isn’t surprising. Next move will probably be up to Authentic, but it’s most likely time to shutter SI and admit that the marketplace changed and the magazine didn’t adapt. Lots of companies from that era didn’t. Brian Fowler
And for anyone who doesn't know, Authentic is the company that buys the likeness rights from the families of dead stars and sells T-shirts and such of them. SI's classic photo and cover library is probably more valuable to them than the magazine possibly could be.

SirFozzie
Seeing a lot of people chanting the "Go woke, go broke" mantra about Sports Illustrated, namely, their decisions to put a plus size woman and a woman (who is trans) on the cover of the swimsuit issue. Of course, the real lesson is that 'Be old-school and fail to change with the times means you'll die off like the dinosaurs" will go RIGHT over the CHUDlets heads at about Mach 2.1.

Athletic isn't in a position to buy anything right about now from what I'd heard. Barstool is still dealing with Portnoy's failed attempts to become a sportsbook. It's gonna be hilarious if Defector swoops in and saves SI.

Probably both are true. SI failing to adapt to the times is the larger cause, but I’m mystified that a company in their position was willing to alienate readers and advertisers like that. The real real lesson is don't get bought by VC guys who don't know or care how your industry works and will load you up with billions in debt.
Stefanie Sparkleface
There's a lot of things readers and advertisers used to not like that are perfectly commonplace nowadays. Time marches on, attitudes change. Or, what the heck, since this is DVDVR, let's use something from the Talking Heads. It's not... yesterday... anymore.
