Dolfan in NYC Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 WOJ BOMB~! He's retiring. (Though I honestly wonder if this this was a retirement in lieu of a non-renewal of his contract.) 1
RIPPA Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 Neither thing mentioned it but Wojo is class of 91 so that explains why he choose the Bonnies (and why they probably reached out to him)
Log Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 His line in his statement about the time commitment is so true. There was a brief window when I had an opportunity to become a tv sports reporter/anchor. I ended up passing on it because its a 24/7 commitment these days. If something happens, a trade or injury or coach fired on your day off, you're working. Also, it's just constant weekends. I like sports a lot, but I don't have the kind of love for them that you have to have for that job. Those guys that are constantly tweeting updates, etc. have to be spending every waking minute working.
RIPPA Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 The byline on ESPN's story about it is "Pete Thamel, Jeff Passan and Adam Schefter" 1

The people who are doing regular reporting have a demanding ass job, but there is no world where I'd ever want to be a Woj/Shams/Schefter news breaker who people expect to be first on everything. Diana Russini was on LeBatard's show talking about how much of her life is in her phone and how much it consumes her life. It sounds like a nightmare. If I could be a columnist, I'd work in sports media, but all of those other jobs are more work than money unless you're at the top of the heap. 1

SirFozzie Posted September 19, 2024 Posted September 19, 2024 20 million, in fact. ESPN is looking to see if he'd accept some kind of emeritus role. 1
Zimbra Posted September 26, 2024 Posted September 26, 2024 (edited) ESPN laid off Zach Lowe as a money-saving move. He was pretty much the last person on their NBA team who actually knew anything about basketball. E: Actually that last part is unfair to Chiney Ogwumike who actually knows her stuff. Edited September 26, 2024 by Zimbra
dogwelder Posted September 26, 2024 Posted September 26, 2024 At this point DVDVR friend Bill Barnwell is the only thing making me keep an ESPN+ account.

That's a terrible move on their part. I wonder if he'll land at The Ringer. Him and Simmons have done each other's podcasts fairly often.
RIPPA Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 Apparently ESPN is seriously considering having Jeff Passan switch sports and be Wojo’s replacement
RIPPA Posted October 2, 2024 Posted October 2, 2024 Technically this could be in the baseball thread but I am putting it here In court today - Diamond Sports Group announced they would only carry Atlanta Braves games next year That means the following 11 teams are boned Cincinnati Reds, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels, Miami Marlins, St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays (these teams had contracts through the 2025 season) Cleveland Guardians, Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers all had deals with Diamond that just expired MLB said Diamond completely "sandbagged" (MLB's term) them and they haven't had time to prepare a response https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/41569980/diamond-sports-group-carry-11-mlb-teams-2025
Contentious C Posted October 3, 2024 Posted October 3, 2024 When did Bob Ryan get replaced with a draugr from Skyrim?
Zimbra Posted October 7, 2024 Posted October 7, 2024 ESPN is hiring Shams away from Athletic to replace Woj. This will be a sea change in ESPN's NBA coverage, going from a guy who uncritically repeats whatever GMs tell him to a guy who uncritically repeats whatever agents tell him.

Makes you wonder what the point of it all is
Dolfan in NYC Posted October 10, 2024 Posted October 10, 2024 Cam Newton is being hired by ESPN as part of the First Take crew. He'll join next week when they do their HBCU-focused road show.

I can see it being annoying if it's so bad that it become distracting. But, isn't the gripe with Costas from people this year that he's boring?
odessasteps Posted October 11, 2024 Posted October 11, 2024 I will skip games if I can’t stand the commentary or maybe seek out the radio call. 1
odessasteps Posted October 12, 2024 Posted October 12, 2024 Costas and Kubek were great as NBC’s #2 announce team in the 80s. Better than Vin/Gargiola. 1
RIPPA Posted October 14, 2024 Posted October 14, 2024 Not media per se but this works the best in this thread And that doesn't include the Nets who have a preseason game at home tonight too. The only pro sports teams not playing today from the NYC area are the Giants and the Knicks 1
RIPPA Posted October 15, 2024 Posted October 15, 2024 Update - Every tri-state team who played (including the Nets) won EXCEPT the Jets
