PetrolCB Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 If I remember correctly, they can't use the adapted MSG set from Raw and the Royal Rumble years ago, because of the renovations done to the inside of the arena. Which is a shame. I was hoping for it back in October (mainly because I would've been on the aisle), but knew it wasn't an actual possibility.
Technico Support Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 I know they are trying to cut costs but most of the PPV sets are just RAW sets. It sucks. Only WrestleMania looks cool. I liked the Japan show and the MSG show. Exactly. When Summerslam is billed as "the Wrestlemania of the Summer" and then you tune in and it looks just like Raw, you have a problem.
Mr Harms Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 The barriers, the little screen on the ring, the generic sets, the crumbly announce table. They're all things they brought in to look a bit more pro, a bit more crisp. But in doing so, they've taken away an edge they had. Maybe I'm wrong but with it looking so polished there's a predictable feel about it, whereas back in the day I felt (speaking purely for myself here) that literally anything could happen. The announce table for example. It implodes and you just put it back together again and on to the next show. When it was a regular table and someone went through it (bret, mankind, I remember) it was a lot more surprising. Because it was a table, it had a use. Now it's a prop. 3
BurningBeard Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 I just got a bit of e-marketing off Findlay Martin who has put together an e-book of some of the bigger events in wrestling from 1994-2014. I'd be interested in picking it up but I don't have any kind of Kindle etc but I was shocked to read that Power Slam is no longer in print. That mag will always have a special place in my heart as I had no other way to keep up with results and had no knowledge of behind the scenes stuff back in the days pre-internet 1
RonL21 Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 To be fair to the WWE, when MSG went through its renovation a few years ago, they got rid of the entrance to the locker room that always faced the hard cam. The WWE was always faithful to that entrance when it was still there. Don't really see why people are complaining like it was Vince's doing.
PetrolCB Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 Not always faithful. Except for the one episode of Raw, SS'02 and RRs, they always decorated the arena like they always do. Ever since that "First Stunner to Vince" Raw, they basically ignored it. Not counting house shows.
Tromatagon Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 Lucha Underground intentionally makes everything beat up and shitty and gets praised at how much better their production is, since a sterile looking environment sucks for wrestling 2
cool arrow Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 But WWE is totes making movies, you guys.
Technico Support Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 GOD DAMMIT YOU DON'T SEE THE THREE'S COMPANY SET CHANGING EVERY WEEK 4
Go2Sleep Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 Bash at the Beach had the best sets. Halloween Havoc guy was also neat. The sets weren't so big so as to dwarf the rasslers either. I feel like that was something WCW from the mid-'90s on did significantly better than WWF. The WCW themed ppv sets ruled. Just the right level of cheese, and there would always be some kind of garbage match that would roll through and make use of the unique props while Dusty went nuts on commentary. The biggest problem problem with WWE's look is that it hasn't significantly changed since like 97, and even moreso since the mid 2000s. Outside of permissible content and the requistite personnel turnover, shows from 2002 look identical to the ones today. 2
ChesterCopperpot Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 Good article about Undertaker and the BSK here http://www.wwe.com/inside/undertaker-bone-street-krew-bsk-history 1
PetrolCB Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 Pretty much. When was the last time WWE even had a deviated set? Was it that ppv where Cena made it rain chairs for the finish, or where Seth took that nasty fall into the tables when he was in the Shield? I'm talking about the usual shows, not one-offs.
Phantom Lord Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 Not always faithful. Except for the one episode of Raw, SS'02 and RRs, they always decorated the arena like they always do. Ever since that "First Stunner to Vince" Raw, they basically ignored it. Not counting house shows. What I remember about that RAW from MSG was how huge the RAW stage and ramp was on television. It looked like it took up half the building at MSG. As for the renovated MSG, I think they could probably still use the old entrance way but the Garden has it set up now so there's a clear wall to let people look at backstage for the Knicks and Rangers walking to the lockeroom as well as a mini studio set for interviews with players.Them using the stage set up at MSG isn't bad for house shows, but it makes you miss those old simpler shows.
PetrolCB Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 I was referring to that one Raw ('09? '10? '11?) that had the Vince/Piper confrontation, that ended with Vince acting weird (surprise?) with the mics. They used the hard camera entrance for that one. *edit Sorry, thought you were talking about the one I replied with. My mistake.
Ryback Hates Bullies Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 And yes the house show set up would be great for shows. Less is always more. Perhaps, but WWE's set-up, pyro & ballyhoo is partly there as a warning to would be competitors - it's not likely to be scaled down as long as Vince is around (and I'm not sure HHH will think all that different, NXT is not afraid to throw down on entrances).
OSJ Posted November 16, 2015 Author Posted November 16, 2015 Asuka is the brightest light in womens' wrestling in the US, ever! She's technically as sound as Akira Hokuto and a million times better connecting with the fans. I know we are on the internet so hyperbole is the accepted language here, but Asuka has had a couple decent squashes and is pretty over with the smarkiest crowd in wrestling. Akira Hokuto was the best wrestler in the world in 1993, male or female, and was basically as over as Daniel Bryan was during his title quest. Asuka isn't even the best women's wrestler on the roster. I'll plead guilty to hyperbole, but she is damn entertaining.

Outside of permissible content and the requistite personnel turnover, shows from 2002 look identical to the ones today. The irony is that Triple H and Vince made great use of the Armageddon 99 set during their match. Considering they're in charge now, you'd think that they'd remember that.
Jiji Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 Asuka's execution is twice as good as any of the four horsewomen. She's silky smooth in the ring. I just watched the iron woman match and there was a lot of clunky stuff going on. I think it was Matt D ages ago when the NXT women were first starting to put on very good matches that said they're being asked to do stuff they're not quite capable or able to pull off yet. Don't take this as me saying Sasha isn't great, because she is. But Asuka is way more polished from a technical perspective.
Michael Sweetser Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 FWIW, there are a LOT of rules re: ringside distance in commission states (such as Washington, which is what I'm most familiar with) which have been written basically to WWE's current design standards. Not only won't they change it, at this point, they may not actually be able to. 2

NXT's set looks a lot like NJPW's larger sets and is awesome. Add an elevated platform aisle and it's perfect.

Michael Sweetser Posted November 17, 2015 Posted November 17, 2015 I'm envisioning Bayley in a Popemobile version of a Segway. 1
