JUNE 2015 WRESTLING DISCUSSION

Recommended Posts

Ok let's not get too carried away here if this was the early 90's he'd be a Dynamic Dude at best given his personality and ability.

If this was the mid-90s he'd show up unannounced in ECW as Nick Nemeth and rail against his gimmick and his role as a job boy for the top of the card.

I doubt this means anything, but apparently at tonight's house show in Vegas, Brad Maddox did some sort of CM Punk cosplay.

I saw that. I mean the outfit sort of looks similar and he apparently did a "pipebomb" (god, I hate that term) and no one in the crowd cared. I'm all for anything to get Maddox on tv. I just hope this isn't it.

WWE should just pay Eric Bischoff to do a one off appearance and introduce Brad Maddox as his nephew "Brad Bischoff." EB can make some BS excuse about how he wouldn't let Brad use the Bischoff name until he had proven himself.

I'm not sure where you go from there though, but at least it's a better start than being BM Punk.

There was a discussion in the cliches thread about the need for managers to make a comeback and Maddox would be perfect for the position.  He'd be great putting together a mid-card heel stable, or maybe just managing a team or one guy.  The guy's a natural talker and heel and is good enough in the ring to bump or work a mixed tag match when he needs to.

He was part of that Survivor Series angle where the Authority were trying to fuck with the face team. His performance in that match was off the charts, so naturally there was little follow-up to it.

Still fucking pisses me off.

The problem with Dolph, or at least one of the problems, is that he has shown a complete inability to change or grow as a performer. There are loads of people less talented, but they are at least trying to get better or do different things to get over. Dolph has essentially decided to do the same thing over and over again, and while it has gotten him good reactions, it's probably folly to think that the exact same act that made him a mainstay of the midcard would suddenly lead to him being a long term champion.

Also, this is clearly a personal bias that I've spoken about before, but Dolph's go to promo of 'I may not have the support of the bookers but I'm gonna go out and prove that I'm the best fake fighter and have the best match on the card with the full cooperation of whomever my opponent may be!' Is horrific and sums up basically everything I don't like about modern pro wrestling.

Someone correct me here, but doesn't Punk own the copyright on his gimmick and couldn't he sue them for trying to damamge/defame/hurt his brand? It would be really ironic. I mean if he owns the gimmick, I'm pretty sure they couldn't do this without his ok.

Daniel Bryan: Just Says Yes! Yes! Yes! Is out today and I’ll by buying it. The documentary is an extended version of Journey to WrestleMania. When I first watched the original version, I said it was one of the best ever documentaries by the company and should be on a Daniel Bryan DVD Box Set. Great selection of matches. Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus from Extreme Rules 2012 is Sheamus’s best one on one match, ditto for Antonio Cesaro and Ryback in the Gauntlet match from the July 2013 RAW. Daniel Bryan vs. John Cena at SummerSlam 2013 was my Match of the Year, perfect match. The WrestleMania XXX Triple Threat main event is one of the best types of that match and an underrated match from 2014.

I’d lose:

Daniel Bryan vs. Big Show. Smackdown, 6th January 2012.

Daniel Bryan vs. CM Punk. Money in the Bank, 15th July 2012.

Daniel Bryan vs. Randy Orton. RAW, 17th March 2014.

Daniel Bryan vs. Roman Reigns. FastLane, 22nd February 2015.

I’d replace with:

Daniel Bryan vs. Cody Rhodes vs. Sheamus vs. Sin Cara vs. Kane vs. Wade Barrett vs. Heath Slater vs. Justin Gabriel. Money in the Bank, 17th July 2011. Hoped this would make it as it remains the greatest Money in the Bank Ladder match.

Daniel Bryan/Kane/Ryback vs. Dean Ambrose/Seth Rollins/Roman Reigns. TLC, 16th December 2012.

Daniel Bryan vs. Randy Orton. RAW, 24th June 2013.

Daniel Bryan vs. Bray Wyatt. Royal Rumble, 26th January 2014.

I bought Daniel Bryan: Just Say Yes! Yes! Yes! on release last Monday and watched it over the last week. I forgot how honest the documentary is with Bryan’s NXT frustration, Bryan’s firing with John Cena calling that decision “a mistake/ashamed they let him go”, rare to see Cena speak out against the WWE like. The crowd’s anger at Daniel’s WrestleMania XXVIII treatment, Bryan not in the 2014 Royal Rumble match with the last entrant, Rey Mysterio getting booed like he did.

I really liked how Daniel Bryan gives sit down introductions to each match and if a match had a video package, it’s here. You occasionally get the former, rarer the latter. Bryan’s introductions revealed things I didn’t know: Bryan, Wade Barrett or Cody Rhodes were going to win the Smackdown Money in the Bank Ladder match 2011 but Bryan won as the others would be similar to Alberto Del Rio winning the RAW one. Bryan was surprised he won the World Heavyweight Championship on Big Show as he was only at the TLC 2011 PPV because he had an autograph signing at a K-Mart. Bryan said “this sucks” about WrestleMania XXVII and XXVIII both involving Sheamus. At WrestleMania XXVII, their match went down to the preshow and at WrestleMania XXVIII, the match lasted 18 seconds. Sheamus wasn’t happy about either, more so the preshow one. Daniel tells how Great Khali said “What happened brother, that’s fucking bullshit” about Bryan’s WrestleMania XXVIII.

Shame the well deserved standing ovation Daniel Bryan gets after the RAW Gauntlet match is cut off. Watching that for the first time since it happened, what a match especially Bryan vs. Cesaro. I liked how after the Bryan/Cena SummerSlam 2013 match, it returns to separate sit down interviews with Daniel saying how very few beat John clean and Cena putting Bryan over again. The last two interviews with Bryan saying he’s recovered from his injuries, what’s next for him “really wanting to wrestle Brock Lesnar” and have an hour long match are difficult with Bryan back on the shelf since April 2015.

My thoughts on the documentary and matches from my original post remain unchanged. This is one of the best documentaries and DVD’s ever by the WWE…might be the best.

Maddox wasn't trying to be Punk, he came down to the ring in a hoodie and similar looking kick pads. Twitter took off with stories of him coming down to "Cult of Personality" and it became more than what it was.

I really didn't know where else to put this so I'll do it here.

I have been contacted by a website loosely associated with a wrestling podcast to write about historic wrestling TV shows.

Cool right? Well. It's a non paid job.

I mean, I understand I'm not Dave Meltzer, but I've never taken a non paid writing job. I'm not in the business of working for free. I have and can write or edit for sites that actually do pay.

Question is, do I up and demand that I should be paid or do I just say fuck it and turn it down?

I saw a note buried on wwe.com that apparently Erick Rowan was hurt during one of the weekend house shows.

Would explain why Luke Harper worked a singles match on Superstars
