JUNE 2015 WRESTLING DISCUSSION

Recommended Posts

I was about to make a joke about how Rovert doesn't have a twitter account and never has, but then I realized that was a different banned jackass.

Oh yes, the big Anna Kendrick fan.  Oh no that was yet another banned user. I read he's doing MMA now.

What are you talking about?  He's the bee's knees AND the cat's pajamas.

AND some would say cute as a bugs nose...

Agreed.  But Bryan should be trotted out for the kids at the performance center as how not to handle injuries.  Don't drag your feet getting evaluated and treated by conventional medicine.  Don't rush back from a serious injury (granted, management probably had something to do with that one).  Don't, for God's sake, keep doing the same moves that injured you in the first place, if your neck/back/spine is still bad.  And, finally, don't keep taking bumps in the worst way possible, if you need to protect your bad neck/back/spine.  It's mind-boggling that Bryan was regularly doing the missed headbutt spot and taking german suplexes on his head/neck when he came back.

I like Bryan well enough - and Bryan Danielson was hugely entertaining on a regular basis when he worked the indys - but the way he worked matches after his comeback makes me thing he's either some sort of idiot, or wanted to get out of the business without consciously deciding to quit the business.

I think Bryan's problem is that he only knows how to wrestle one way. I don't mean style, because his knowledge of wrestling is hugely varied. I mean he only knows how to wrestle to maximize the quality of whatever match he's in, by whatever he's choosing to decide as quality at the time. Between all of us who've seen him live on Indy shows and in Japan on tapes (or live) and in all the meaningless Smackdown matches he had, can anyone ever remember him dogging it even once? Even when he's only given five minutes, is he not trying to get he most out of that five minutes?

If he was going to wrestle, he needed to find a way to cover for his physical weaknesses a la Austin the brawler. He didn't.

My mother once married a guy who claimed to be a cousin of Randy Savage. I said, "Oh, you're related to Lanny Poffo, too." He said, "No, just Randy Savage." Not surprisingly, the marriage only lasted three weeks.

I'm related to Lars and Ole but not Gene and Arn.

I'm related to CW and Ken.

Bret Hart interview for SI. Sadly, he's probably right about Bryan.

This just reminded me of how much I can't stand Bret Hart now. He comes off like such a blowhard and know it all. He nails some things, but then he comes off like an ass in the next breath. Like, the whole doom and gloom shit about only big guys getting the payday now is nonsense.

Is it nonsense? They locked Brock back up and Roman Reigns is their guy. The one indy guy they're really getting behind in Kevin Owens, while not jacked, is not a small guy. What small Daniel Bryan sized guy looks to be in the Mania Main Event picture anytime soon? What skinny CM Punk sized guy is there?

They've been pushing Neville pretty well, I don't think Ambrose and Rollins are done by any stretch of the imagination, and Finn looks like the heir apparent on NXT.

Bret was specifically talking about your Mania Main Event guys. He also doesn't consider Rollins to be a small guy because he really isn't.

Right now we're in a period where Vince is looking for the guy to take over from Cena. That prototype is still a guy like Roman Reigns.

The one guy I think might have a chance to "daniel bryan" things up is Sami Zayn because I don't really see Vince getting why people will love him so much.

Rollins is bout the same size as Punk, maybe a bit taller, and he just ended Wrestlemania by walking out with the title. I don't see any realistic way to say he's not a "small" guy in comparison to Reigns/Brock types.

The announce team really missed a trick at the Rumble by not acknowledging the crazy shape Rollins is in. He didn't look out of place next to Cena and Lesnar at all. I also thought that the match made it look like he could hurt both of them, though he did have to pick his moments. I thought it was pretty smart elevation of him as an in-ring threat, though it could have been emphasised more by some decent commentary.

I noticed that too. Seth really has jacked himself up since he was in FCW and the beginnings of The Shield. I've noticed that Dean has gotten a lot bigger too. It's kinda silly that they announce him at 225 or whatever it is. He's a pretty big dude.

Others addressed this, but there was more bullshit in Bret's article than just this. Like the Tyson Kidd's injury. By all accounts, it was a freak accident, and here's Bret, blaming the match making by pairing up Kidd and Joe on short notice, blaming Joe for a dangerous move, etc.

Or maybe shit happens or Kidd took the bump wrong. No, instead it's "Joe is reckless" and everyone else to blame because Tyson is one of the best in the business.

If it wasn't that, it was praising Reigns in one breath and then damning him in the next, comparing him to HHH where he's intense all of the time. HHH wasn't intense all of the time. If he wasn't intense than he was a sarcastic prick. If Reigns isn't intense then he's (trying) to be as smooth as silk, laid back and witty. And Bret ignores why fans took such a liking to him, which was that Reigns was an awesome shitkicker who didn't fuck around, but according to Bret, it's either Reigns was forced down fans throats (this is why his push failed) and Reigns is just a big tough guy who kicks people's asses (this is not why his push failed).

And while he has those moments of backwards thinking or just completely missing something, he's correctly praising Cody Rhodes, he's doing a good job talking about where Daniel Bryan may be (even though I think it's irresponsible to say DB is done since Bret wouldn't know personally), and he correctly states some reasons why WWE is in good hands with HHH.

Bret talks out of both sides of his mouth pretty consistently. Every interview he does he brings it back to Goldberg kicking him in the head, being reckless, and costing him millions of dollars, then tries to say he's over it and he doesn't blame Bill. Then he repeats the whole spiel 4-5 more times.
