JUNE 2015 WRESTLING DISCUSSION

Hogan's opinion would mean more to me if he hadn't spent his entire TNA run schilling a different guy as the future of professional wrestling every week. Hulk's always working. I'd like his thoughts about a guy before he's already really over and getting a monster push on the main roster.

I kinda gotta agree here, IIRC he was high on AJ just before his start in TNA and they push him to the back of the line.

That's typical TNA bullshit though. To be fair, Fourtune could have been good. Flair as JJ Dillion with Styles as Flair, Storm/Roode as Tully/Arn, and Nigel/Desmond as the 4th guy could have been a great heel stable. But they put Frankie Kazarian in the Roma spot and had Nigel as a hanger on/Jeff Jarrett circa 96. TNA's biggest problem always has been competent booking. For Fourtune to work they needed someone to be Dusty Rhodes. For what ever reason they pegged Abyss as the guy (not to be Dusty, but just the super face).

TNA has a long history of dicking guys around though. I'm just glad AJ finally saw the light and got out of there. Too bad James Storm wasn't as smart.

Speaking of Storm, I remember really wanting Storm and Harris to be signed by WWE circa 2003-2004. AMW would've been a decent midcard tag team act in WWE. At the very least, we'd get a boring series of AMW/La Resistance matches.

I would say that AMW was a missed opportunity for WWE but I haven't watched one of their matches in a while so I might be looking at them with rose tinted glasses.

I just remember that old topic on the board where I want to say Raven Mack but most likely someone else points out that Harley Race praising... I dunno, let's go ahead and guess HHH? in an article is just Harley hitting his spots in a new context. I think the skepticism about a wrestler's comments is pretty natural, but like I think couching it in "well when this worker was getting paid by someone else" is maybe missing the point.

This is important- Hogan being a worker doesn't invalidate the point he makes either. If he puts forth an idea and all you have is "well he's a worker so I won't ever buy it," then it follows you shouldn't like wrestling matches or promos, as they're putting forth ideas and asking you if you buy them or not. But that's clearly ridiculous, right? So let Hogan hit his spots and figure out if you're down for the idea or not, but don't be all like "THE SCARLET LETTER" about it.

If none of that made sense, I am mad sleep deprived.

Is there anyone who would qualify as a "home grown" TNA guy?  As in someone who didn't work much before getting started there and has spent a bulk of their career wrestling for them?  I know Roode did some job matches in WWE but I think he's been there most of his career, James Storm even moreso.  Abyss got started in NWA Wildside/Anarchy and had a cup of coffee in ROH but it seems like he's been a TNA lifer.  Anyone else?

Just put Harper with Cesaro and everyone's happy.

(...except Tyson Kidd and Rowan)

Or, shit, just have them feud.

Note: I didn't realize how much I wanted that to happen until I just wrote it.

Someone must have read that, because they actually booked that match hours later... on Main Event, where noone will see it.

I'm struggling. Chris Sabin?

Magnus is probably the best example I can think of.  Not sure about his career before TNA

Sabin was kind of big time (well big time for indies) long before he went to TNA with Ring of Honor.

Sabin wasn't a regular for ROH. I associate him more with TNA than I do ROH. I think of Petey Williams when I think homegrown TNA guys. His path to TNA is similar to Chris Sabin's, training with Scott D'Amore and getting his start in Border City.

So basically, Hulk Hogan can finally say things that are right on and cool, and still people have to find a reason to shit on it and turn it around as a negative. That's lovely. No reason to be fucking Columbo about it.

Well, to be fair, it's Hogan.  The only reason to pay attention to Hogan's comments this time is that people like Kevin Owens and want to embrace the idea that Hogan is endorsing him (Owens).  Hogan spouts so much gibberish that I tend to think he's either addled, a pathological liar, or simply says wacky things to get people talking about him in an attempt to stay relevant. Just because i agree with what Hogan said about Owens in this instance doesn't mean I attach any more credibility to it.

I'm guessing Hogan is either ( a ) trying to book himself into an angle with Owens at some point; ( b ) was simply reading something Steph and Hunter told him to say, or ( c ) is confusing Owens with someone else, probably Andre the Giant or Brutus Beefcake.

The interviewer asked him about Kevin Owens.  He's not gonna start talking about Finn Balor.

Or he was literally asked about Kevin Owens by the interviewer.  Reading is fundamental bro

I once thought Al Snow could be a solid upper midcard guy. We all make mistakes.

He could've!  He was awesome in SMW.

I really dug the Al Snow/Unabomb team in Smoky Mountain.  Honestly, I even wanted to see Glen Jacobs (Kane) on my TV when they teamed.  That was the only time I've really wanted to see Jacobs in a match.

I was just reminded that the Chris Benoit murder-suicide took place eight years ago, today. I didn't have a Twitter or Facebook, at the time, so I kept up with what was happening on the DVDVR. What a surreal night.

Was probably the weirdest and most surreal thing I've ever experienced in wrestling. Watching those Raw interviews now is just utterly bizarre because as they progress you can see the wrestlers coming to the realization "holy fuck he did it."
