WRESTLER OF THE DAY: HULK HOGAN

RIPPA

Recommended Posts

Love this thread, full of greatness. Hulkamania forever.

Real American always the best. Loved the Bonnie Tyler Ravishing instrumental theme as well, also featured on Hogan's Rock N Wrestling.

Awesome Hulkster motorcycle entrance vs Flair, especially to Real American now. Hulkamania '02 was so great, loved that run.

Unfortunately the full match is no longer on youtube but this was always a favorite moment of mine, super fun match in an exciting era of SD. Fitting it was the 4th too.

I can't believe I totally forgot about the Goldberg match as a high profile Hogan job.

I can't wait to hear Johnny review that Hogan/Atlas match on Titans of Wrestling at some point.

Does Hogan go to the AWA shortly after that match with Atlas?

Yes, which is why Hulk lost, since he was on the way out.  Even in 1981 the guy didn't do jobs (except for Andre, of course).

I looked, but couldn't find one I want everyone to see: a weird alternate-camera version of the Mania III match. It's on the "History of the WWE" 3-dvd set. It includes a copy of Hogan/Andre, filmed by a hard cam from the opposite side of the ring. It never cuts away from this one shot, and there's no commentary. So it's kinda the closest approximation to seeing what the match must've been like for the fans there live. In some ways, it's actually better than the traditional version.

Anyway. More runnin' wild:

The legendary match where Hogan "shoot" knocks out Inoki for the IWGP world heavyweight championship. This reminds me: Inoki really does his best stuff as an underdog babyface, doesn't he? Yeah, he's a huge man by Japanese standards, but 1.his offense is frequently, well, not-so-good and 2.he can take SUCH a GREAT beating, that at times he damn near puts Kobashi to shame in the "bump bump bump oh god i'm dead NO I'M NOT, I'M FIRING UP, MUTHAFUCKA~!" department. Also: Hogan throws the single greatest clothesline of his life, inspiring a hilarious "...did I really just see that shit?!" double-take from the referee.

Hogan vs Terry Funk. Because it's HULK HOGAN VERSUS TERRY FUNK, that's why! I'm a huge mark for how Hulk counters Terry's drop-down here, you don't see that spot nearly enough. It's got an uncharacteristic reeking-of-Memphis finish, too.

The closest we'll (probably) ever get to Hogan vs. Stone Cold, as Austin & Rock take on the original NWO. Sadly, they share MAYBE thirty seconds of time in the ring together( it feels like Razor Ramon worked like 80% of the match for his team). But it's still funny to hear the mini-roar from the hardcores in the audience when Hogan tags in on Austin . As a Hogan showcase it ain't much in terms of workrate, but as a tease for the Mania match (he just KEEPS avoiding the Rock over and over again) it's pretty sweet.

Random thought #1: I never noticed before how physically similar Rock and Scott Hall are, in terms of body proportions and movements and offense and bumping style. R.T.#2: holy SHIT look at how energetic that opening is. Why can't we have nice things anymore?!

Fancam of a house show match. Why? Who cares? Because it was literally the very last recorded match ever held under the WWF name. This was days before the Raw where they adopted "WWE". It's bizarre and ironic but perfectly appropriate that the Hulkster should be the one to turn out the lights and lock the doors, as he and Rock take on Jericho and Angle to give a properly epic send-off for the Fed.

and finally, our main event of the evening:

Hulk Hogan versus Stan Hansen. Hogan's best match ever, period.

Yeah - that is why I didn't post the clip. It was a through back to the days when Bix would send Dean and Schneider tapes (oh yeah - the Bixlevision jokes will never not be funny to me).

Anyway - this happened 18 years ago today. We are all fucking old

And speaking of bad VQ - every version posted sucks

I remember watching this on the replay late at night and always thought I dreamed it.

That post-Nash period is kind of surreal in hindsight what with an honest to goodness heel Sting.  Too bad Russo came in shortly and rebooted everything for another NWO reunion.

Sting was shockingly creepy as a heel, too. I remember one throwaway vignette they did, where Hogan got out of his limo and was immediately mobbed by a bunch of grade-school-aged Hulkamaniacs. (I'd make a joke about his ego, but considering that the Hulkster is second only to John Cena in terms of doing charity work for children, we'll let this one slide.) While he's doing the usual showboating stuff with his fans, Sting creepily sneaks into the crowd, all ducked down and hunched over and walking like Gollum. In a high-pitched voice, he's droning stuff like "Hulk, can I get your autograph?!" And then he lays Hogan out with the world's tiniest baseball bat and sends all the kids screaming and running. Awesome.

Even later that night, it still continued. Hogan did one of those "maybe I'm not at a hundred percent, brother, but all my Hulkamaniacs came out tonight to see me fight someone and blah blah blah" type promos. Cut to Sting, in a dark room, sitting at a table. He's staring directly into the camera and slowly, almost gently tapping the bat on the table. Tap. Tap. Tap. "Looks like I didn't get the job done earlier tonight." Tap. Tap. Tap. "I'll have to DO SOMETHING about that." Tap. Tap. Tap. Creeeeepy~!

Who was booking in that few-week period after Nash and before Russo, anyway? Was it just the usual-suspects WCW committee of Sullivan, Dusty, and whomever else?

Shit, a few years back, me, Matt, and Vic were going to do a big Hulk Hogan project along the lines of their Demolition project.  It feel apart pretty quickly because of real life and shit, but I think I still have the write ups to a dozen or 15 matches on my computer somewhere.

Early WWF title reign Hogan was awesome.

Oh yeah. Hogan in 1984-85 was pretty damn great before he figured out the Hogan-by-numbers equation.

First time I saw a match end with a leg drop out of nowhere, my jaw hit the floor.

And he was so damn quick and fast for his size back in the day.  I didn't get in until around 1990, so I'd only seen a small handful of that stuff.  I felt like I owed him an apology for my teens/early 20's of hating his work.

As long as I live I'll never forget watching Hogan vs Bret on Nitro and seeing Hogan bust out his rolling cross arm bar during the match and hearing my dad say "holy shit Hogan can wrestle". We were both blown away, jaws on the floor. Amazing.

Personally, A.probably the Muta match, he uses pretty much every single trick he can remember in that one (although there's probably something in his earlier pre-Hulkamania years which beats it); and B.either of the 1990 matches with Warrior or Hansen.
