  2. Kevin Owens has a good Sharpshooter. Probably because it's taught in high school gym class in Canada.

  3. My daughter - 4 and 5 at the time, now 7 - looked up to a lot of the females wrestling for Chikara (before the fall) because they were able to hold their own against male opponents. She has 8x10 autographs hanging in her room of del Ray, Saturyne, and a few others. (And Ophidian ... loves her some Ophidian.) The message of empowerment is there.

  5. I've always hated the "If Barry had Emmitt's line," talk. Barry Sanders' offensive line wasn't terrible, and his running style undermined his offensive line's blocking assignments. Emmitt Smith did play behind one of the best offensive lines ever, but he was also really fucking good. Barry's offensive line was merely good, but his running style made them look worse than what they were. He spent a lot of time running away from they were blocking. I do want to know what he would have been like in Kubiak's zone blocking scheme. He could have been incredible in a scheme where the blocking scheme was more of an abstract concept than a concrete concept.

  8. Everytime Daniel Bryan's health gets brought up, I feel compelled to point out that they just recently gave Tommy Dreamer, a man who publicly spoke about his brain damage issues, a month-long run. Also, Dave and Bryan decided to give Jim Cornette an hour to spout about how much he hates Lucha Underground and the business, and Cornette is absolutely so full of shit. You can tell that the only thing he's literally seen of the promotion was a highlight video of the upcoming season. The only spot he could even mention was Joey Ryan doing one of his world's strongest dick spots that hasn't even happened on television yet, and the fact that the reason the spot is over is because it got more worldwide exposure and got talked about more than anything Cornette's ever done in the business. Cornette's whole idea is that the reason wrestling isn't as over as it was in the past is because people don't believe it's "real". When that hasn't been the case since he was a child.

  9. You know what you look like to me, Vince, with your good roids and your cheap shoes? You look like a rube. A well scrubbed, hustling rube with a little taste. Good nutrition's given you some length of bone, but you're not more than one generation from poor white trash, are you, "Mr." McMahon? And that accent you've tried so desperately to shed: pure Nawth Calaina. What is your father, dear? Is he a carnival barker? Does he stink of Pancake? You know how quickly the boys found you... all those tedious sticky fumblings in the back seats of cars... while you could only dream of getting out... getting anywhere... getting all the way to the NWA.

  10. The idea of Bryan on NXT is awesome. I'd love to see that. I just don't know what his role would be since Regal is the commissioner. DON'T ENGAGE.

  11. Meltzer talked about this a few weeks ago, regarding Bryan getting out of his contract on the same basis. Since he's still getting his downside and merch, Bryan would have to prove he'd still make more elsewhere. Meltzer is not a lawyer either (god I'd love to hear him on a case) but that sounds right, I guess. Wonder what NJPW would give a WWE headliner who could work their style... 12 more concussions and a wheelchair. Strong style!

  12. What's so confusing about the Bryan situation and the reason why it is so prime for conspiracy theories is that there are unquestionably people on the roster who are in terrible shape and allowed to continue. Plus, the WWE is now raiding the indies and Japan for guys who have a lot of miles on them. Yet, all of these guys get a pass and Bryan is the one guy not cleared to continue. In a way it feels like they are making an example out of him.

  13. I know I have told this story before but one night in college - half my floor went to see Schindler's List and the other half went to see Philadelphia I am shocked they didn't have campus police do wellness checks on all of us after.

  15. Oh yeah, I forgot about that Alicia quote. That was great. I try not to be too much of a jerk about this point, because it's mostly due to booking, but the best parts of this show are when the girls talk as if they're fucking Lou Thesz.

  17. Most of the Celestial Shaw Brothers releases are out of print, at least physically. But YesAsia is the best site to try. Too many shitty bootlegs on ebay and Amazon. You can find some stuff on Netflix and Hulu or to buy on iTunes. If you have a FYE in your area they have a decent selection of kung fu movies, you might find some of the SB stuff released by Dragon Dynasty or Image (Eastern Masters). Make sure you get discs with the Celestial logo on them, otherwise they're bootlegs (watch out for stuff from Ground Zero) No SB compilations AFAIK. Dragon Dynasty put out a couple of double feature sets which are decent. Shout Factory has done some of Golden Harvest movies (Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Wang Yu, Angela Mao) which are pretty solid. BTW my site is still up but I haven't updated it for a while. I might see Ip Man 3 this weekend so I'll put a review up if that happens. I haven't really had active ecommerce links up for a while though. Amazon shut down my links because of tax issues and the sites that advertised on mine have closed. But YesAsia is still up and a good place to get import discs.

  19. There is a great essay to be written by someone other than me about how The Force Awakens and Creed are both stealth remakes while also being decades later sequels to two of the biggest, most populist films of the seventies, and what that means. But Christ was Creed great. Can't wait for the blu-ray so I can see it again.

  21. Somber time of year for me. January 30th would have been my mom's 62th birthday; she passed away on February 11th of 2006 from lung cancer, so it's been almost ten years. I lived with her at the time(so, yeah, I lived the gimmick, LOL) and had to learn really quickly how to survive on my own with my meager radio station board operator salary. I still live in the same house with the dogs that she got about a year before she passed away (they're both 11 years old now). While I've made it this far, life is still a rocky road as I had issues even before her passing. She was never into the whole wrestling thing, but I took her to WCW Slamboree in 1999 since it was on Mother's Day and in St. Louis. She indulged me as it related to my comedy aspirations since my cousins and I would do amateur-ish recreations of our favorite SNL skits. While I'm still working on the whole life thing and I've got plenty of flaws, I hope she's proud of me.

  25. I respect his opinion here, and it is consistent with his criticisms of the evolution of the sport in the last few decades. And I sympathize with his viewpoint - I miss the days when pro-wrestling had that patina of legitimacy, when you could look out in a crowd at a sold-out wrestling show and see nothing but blue collar adults, not sniggering teenagers in on the joke and little kids waving merchandise around. I miss real heat, angry crowds thinking they are witnessing heinous crimes against humanity committed by men of unparalleled evil, repelled my men of unquestioned gumption - and both groups perfectly happy to smack you without a second thought if you questioned the legitimacy of their occupation. But I know those days ain't coming back. You can't put this toothpaste back in the tube. The sport is not a sport, it is a show, and that ain't changing, ever. I don't like it, but I acknowledge it. And so, if we are going to have to live in the modern era, I find Lucha Underground's approach to be the best take on the post-kayfabe world yet. I love the vignettes, which even Corny acknowledges as exquisitely done. And actually I echo his distaste for some aspects of the lucha style, as I have always objected to the overly scripted spots and complicated transitions that require too much waiting around, these things ruin my suspension of disbelief. I accept this as the price I pay for getting to witness the evolution of the "sport" I've watched since I was a kid. LU is the only wrestling I watch, and in its absence I wouldn't watch anything except old events featuring way too many dead wrestlers. I think that's a net win for pro-wrestling.

  30. Stumbled across a couple cool clips of people talking about Cena. Here is Sami Callihan talking about Cena hanging out at the performance center: https://streamable.com/n4t9 Del Rio goes so far as to say Cena is the only person he has ever allowed to call spots for him:

  33. Back on form this week, so it's time for another edition of How To Be A Horrible Person by the Total Divas! You might think I'd lead off with the big kerfuffle between Nattie and TJ, but really, one of them freaking out and the other being completely uncommunicative is really just a lesson in how to be Nattie and TJ. Nattie does, however, make the list for thinking that she needs to take TJ's mind off of wrestling, and doing so by bringing a bunch of wrestlers over. Everyone in that BRC/New Day match TJ was watching was at the party other than Xavier. Nattie also makes the list for telling her sister "not to send mixed signals" to Big E. She was rubbing his thigh. That signal ain't mixed, honey. Paige: "I was thinking that I would apologize to you if I know that you have been working hard, so I apologize to you." I had to play that back to see if that was an actual apology. Nikki gets runner-up horribleness for bitching about Brie not thinking about her while basically giving not the tiniest bit of a fuck about Brie's reasons for not wanting to do the commercial. The horrible winner though, comes out of our Eva/Mandy storyline. Is it Mandy for latching onto a friendly offer and being ready to dump her like a bad habit by the end of the first episode? Is it Eva Marie for having the political nous of a bowl of yogurt when given a gift horse in the form of Mandy who can draw heat away from her and then deciding to try and hook her wagon to that particular horse? Is it Alicia for holding onto a pointless grudge? Is it Rosa for being as deadly boring on this show as she is in wrestling? No! It's Mark Carano or whoever it was at WWE who watched the whole Eva Marie thing play out and thought, "Let's do that again!"

  35. I'm trying to think of ways they could screw up Nakamura. Dude is pretty much an untouchable combo of charisma and in ring ability. The reason I think he'll translate to WWE really well is his selling. From what I've seen Nak has great body language and facial expressions.
