I have no idea what people see in the 70's Superman.

These young mother fuckers spoiled by Man Of Steel CGI, I swear.  KIDS TODAY DON'T KNOW SHIT BOUT NUTHIN~! :)

Most of the dislike I have seen aimed at Superman usually comes in the form of criticism of Gene Hackman's interpretation of Luthor.

I can see how the clownish portrayal of Lex Luthor can be very off-putting, but I think too many people forget too easily that his intention was to destroy a fifth of the continental US for the sake of a land grab scheme and he gives zero fucks about who dies in the process.

I think people underestimate what a big deal it was to have an expensive production with Hackman and Brando legitimize comic book movies at the time. The only contemporaries of Superman were the low-budget Marvel TV movies, and this was almost 40 years before winning an Oscar was actually a gateway to getting your own superhero franchise.

I sort of hate Christopher Reeve Superman. I always hated the "Clark Kent is the costume" thing. But we've been around this circle.

Did you see IV in the theater because I sure as fuck did

I saw IV in the theater.

I remember my non-Comic book knowing mother commenting "What the fuck was THAT?" on the way out.

Superman's 5 votes is the most for any movie so far.  FYI.

Just to clarify- it's first with 5 actual votes

One movie appeared on 6 ballots but it was 4 votes and 2 honorable mention

My mom always likes to tell the story about her and my dad going to 'Superman' in theaters.  The tagline for the film was "You'll believe a man can fly!" and my mom walked out, looked at my dad and said "Nope, I still don't believe it."  She said 'Star Wars' was much more effective in that regard that she said you actually believe what you're seeing onscreen.

Also, I've always found Superman to be kind of a boring hero.  He's like that kid you play with who when you shoot him goes "I can't be hurt by bullets", then when you stab him goes "I can't be hurt by knives", and then you blow him up and he's invincible to that, too, so eventually you just let him win so he'll shut up and you can go do something else.  That's how I've always felt about Superman, you just know every time someone's going to magically find some kryptonite to mess with him because what else are they going to do?!

Okay but the whole sequence Brando is in, is legit one of the worst things on film in the entire 1970's. If it wasn't for the Star Wars Holiday Special having an old wookie using a softcore porn VR machine, it would be internet legendary.
