JULY WRESTLING DISCUSSION

Recommended Posts

He was a good brawler and the GORE GORE GORE was over as a finisher. I think his promos were always going to keep him out of a top spot.

If you can, check out Rhyno/Raven from Backlash 2001.

That Raven match is indeed awesome. Raven was busting his ass during his last WWF run.

And for ECW Rhino matches, he had some good ones with Spike Dudley, Tajiri, and (shockingly) Sandman.

I'm a total Spike Dudley mark but I got to ask who didn't have a good match with Spike Dudley?

Rhino had a decently long run in TNA where he delivered some good stuff. BFG '05 was great in making Rhino come off like a total star for at least that night. The 2006 feud with Christian had some good matches and I thought he had some good promos during that one as well. Same for the later 07-08 feuds with Styles and Storm.

That Rhyno piledriver reminded me of watching the last ECW PPV at my parents' house which featured a Missy Hyatt promo where she told Francine will you "fuck him already" about Justin Credible that also feature an innuendo about a submarine sandwich and the characterization of Francine as someone who would only sleep with a guy with a belt (Classy woman as gold-digger motif) that I remember thinking "You know, THIS might be enough embarrassing enough to make me give up wrestling for good" and I really thought about and was curious if there ever was a moment, Benoit incident aside, that made you seriously consider giving up the pro graps as a hobby.  For me it was this promo, as well as JR referring to Pat Patterson as "Poop Stain Patterson" that made me think "Do I really still need this in my life?"

When that video of Kenny Omega wrestling a little girl showed up. A bunch of my friends thought I was some sort of creep, despite me never linking it to them. Good people I'd known for years and years, who still keep me at arm's length. People standing up for it is the reason I don't post on the puro board anymore.

If I were going to do a list of the guys with the coolest body language and mannerisms, Sid would be way up there, maybe at the top. Even under that mask, he just physically emotes like this fired-up dude who's going to start dishing out powerbombs any moment.

As a nine-year old Sting mark Sid certainly was the scariest guy in the world heading into Halloween Havoc 1990. I mean if you were a kid at the time not knowing how horrible business WCW was actually doing Sting fending off this Black Scorpion freakozoid and that "Frankenstein's monster come to life" Sid Vicious was a hell of a lot cooler and more interesting than Ultimate Warrior going through the motions verus Million Dollar Man and being the Road Warriors' third wheel vs. Demolition.

HLA. Katie Vick.

HLA was pretty bad.  Katie Vick never bothered me that much, I took it as Triple H making unfair false accusations against Kane because he knew he couldn't beat Kane one-on-one and what's the one of the worst things you can accuse someone of?  It wasn't real high-class, but I've never felt it deserved the massive scorn it's had over the years.

I think I can speak for most on the board that we have suffered through so much horrible wrestling and still maintained a love for the sport that it is too late to leave now.

Hey, I'm still here, aren't I?  I never completely gave up, though I've come close a few times.

I would only find it disturbing if this were in the confines of real life and not fake pro wrestling. She agreed to take the move in a safe planned spot.  I have no excuses for the guy taking the upskirt picture, some guys have no life.

Eh, the whole situation's still pretty scummy.  Untrained porn star being given a sufficiently dangerous move for no pay-off.  Rhyno wasn't feuding with Blue Meanie.  Blue Meanie never got any revenge.  Jasmine St. Clair never got any revenge.  It was just a big guy beating up a woman for no discernible reason.  I'm not a huge fan of men beating up women in pro wrestling, anyways, but I'm willing to waive my objections a little if the situation is right (Trained wrestler, safe bump, done to motivate the face to get vengeance against evil, cowardly heel).  This whole scenario came across like angry heel piledrives a woman off the top because she's a porn star so who cares?  Even the announcers didn't do much protesting when it happened.  Joey Styles' reaction almost sounds like admiration.

To answer caley's question, the guest host era was gruesome for me. It was a weekly reminder of how culturally irrelevant wrestling is, and it made the WWE look so desperate for even the hint of a reach-around from Hollywood. At that point, I'd have sooner swallowed a gun than admit to being a wrestling fan. Which is normally the case. But especially then.

Some of those were pretty bad.  But I liked some of them (the cast of The Goods was pretty fun and you can tell Jeremy Piven was having a blast).  But it got a bit embarrassing when they were dredging up any remotely "famous/infamous" people they could.  I was going to say it wasn't bad enough to drive me away, but I think I actually did cut way back on watching around this time.

The junior varsity Invasion, Shane O'Mac's sucky punches and general upstaging of the roster, Stone Cold going away, Brock going away and Goldberg being portrayed as an impotent mongoloid inferior to Triple H's sledgehammer and that Richard Moll wannabe Kane all turned me off more than any increase in sleaziness the WWE underwent.

Rhyno.....yeah, he's pretty much Abyss; a big but not remarkably big (or particularly imposing) guy who is lost in the WWE but shines in a glorified indy (albeit with TV) like dying days ECW or TNA.

I didn't really quantify how big Abyss wasn't when I got a photograph of Abyss and Jeff Jarrett from a show I went to and Abyss wasn't really towering over Jarrett. The billed height difference is 8 inches and I didn't really see that much of a gap there

Nothing has gotten me close to giving up wrestling, but I distinctly remember having the remote in my hand ready to change the channel should anyone enter the room during a few segments.

1. The HHH funeral parlor re-enactment segment during the Katie Vick feud

2. HLA

3. Vince doing JR's "ass surgery"

4. Boogeyman eating Jillian's facial growth

Those just happened to be when I was living with my parents or a randomly assigned roommate early in college, though. Anything post-2007, I've never worried about. The really embarrassing shit in the attitude era before then (Anything involving the Godfather, Al Snow eating Pepper, kiss my ass match, etc) didn't seem so embarrassing at the time, probably because I was 12.

I got a really good one for perceived height; when Brock debuted smashing the Hardy Boyz on that random Raw I was sure he was every inch as tall as Sid. That's just how largely he loomed over the puny Hardy Boyz and also that I thought he bore an uncanny resemblance to Sid.

I've noticed, watching a lot of attitude and ECW stuff lately how much my non wrestling friends of friends are totally turned off by the extreme violence. Trying to explain a blade job to someone who only understands "1,2,3" is like pulling teeth not to just say "cause blood is cool".

And the violence against women, particularly that 95 ECW, is pretty insane looking back on it, cactus Jack caning that virgin princess right in the face is brutal.

I always thought the extreme violence against women shit in ECW and WWE was really stupid. I'm not sure what kind of people cheer that on. They'd even do it if the women were faces too.

Back in the day when ECW had the syndicated show at 1 AM Friday Night, my best friend who fluctuated between casual fan but mostly non-fan caught some match between I believe Sandman and Stevie Richards that went all over the arena and he kept incessantly mocking how silly the "violence" was.

Of course, that's not exactly the type of thing you guys are talking about but it's funny to throw out there anyways. The first ECW show I caught Dreamer piledrived Beulah. I definitely thought it was different. It certainly piqued my interest more than whatever cookie cutter stuff the big leagues were doing pre-Attitude/N.W.O.

I am posting via my phone so I am not finding the link but I remind you all that there was a Rhyno WOTD thread that has stuff in it too.

Including the clip that Dolfan posted that I am pretty sure certain board members tried to defend it because "hey - she was a porn star. She deserved it"

(And before you think it is funny... it's not)

I was as shocked as you.

I'd never heard of her either, she wore a white wedding dress and was party of a crew with Jason. She attacked was attacked pretty regularly. In one insurance Hack Myers was all bloodied up and she starts antagonizing him, slapping him, and eventually he just belts belts get, which turns her on, so she kisses him, gets blood all over her own face and he piledrives her.

The other incident has her with Tommy Cairo vs Cactus and Dreamer. They keep teasing that Dreamer is gonna cane her but Cactus talks him out of it, takes the cane and out of nowhere just cracks her hard as fuck between the eyes.my friend literally did a spit take. This is all on the network in the early 95 episodes.

What the hell? How did that happen? And who is "the virgin princess"? Mick would be about the last guy who I'd think would be ok with that.

It was Tommy Cairo's valet...name was ironic as Styles mentioned she had been passed around the locker room like a roll of tape. Btw, Tommy Cairo was horrendous, one of my least favorite characters of all time.

Considering all the stuff that came out about Jasmine St.Claire as a person after 3PW went under, the piledriver was a face move.

I remember when the Blue Meanie posted on the WC board about that whole mess, someone asked something along the lines of, "So we can stop putting her over now, right?"

Angel was her ring name. Apparently she was involved with ICP's promotion awhile back as well. (about halfway down page)

Jesus Christ. As amazing as ECW was sometimes, they also scrapped the very bottom of the barrel other times.

Geocities is no more.  Heard a dinosaur fell on it and killed it.

And, dammitt, I kinda liked Tommy Cairo in pre-Extreme ECW (that feud with Sandman, though.... ugh).
