JULY WRESTLING DISCUSSION

Recommended Posts

As far as the violence against women, I thought Stone Cold and HHH beating Lita and the Hardy Boyz with a chair was pretty bad. Also, Umaga's attack on Maria (back in 07/08?) was bad. It was even a match if i remember right. You just knew John Cena was gonna come save her. But no, let's have Cena come after Maria gets laid out. Even the crowd had a WTF reaction.

EDIT: It was a match unfortunately

I've never watched any Mid-South before but I have the 80s set and have access to the 1984 TV season. Is 1984 a good jumping in point?

I'm jealous, may I ask how you got an 80s set of that? I've been looking forward to seeing it on the Network since they bought from Watts, but I'd rather binge watch then have them portion it out to me.

Do a member search for goodhelmet, and then send him a personal message. Check out the 80s project section of the board for more info.

Hasn't it been fairly established that Cena's character is a dick? He doesn't seem to really care about saving people.

Going back to caley's question, I wonder how many people saw that Force Choke Slam BL talked about last month and decided they were done defending this stuff. Not that it's anywhere near as bad as the misogyny angles we're all posted (frankly I'm shocked Jarrett wasn't working face during his last WWF angle with Chyna), but it probably be one of those things on my list that almost made me give up.

Sure she didn't deserve it, but what I'm wondering is why the guy is taking an upskirt shot of a porn star? All he's gotta do is a tiny bit of digging and he can see a lot more than that.

Abyss would've been huge in ECW, probably champion.

As for stuff I wasn't particularly proud of, the race baiting with the Gangstas in Smokey Mountain wasn't exactly pleasant. It was feeding on my area's shittiest tendency. I didn't mind the Tammy Sytch "Hillary Clinton is my hero" stuff, 'cause people can disagree about politics.

Steph hasn't been putting Nikki up against Kane or the like, though. She's put her in handicap matches against other divas. What's Cena supposed to do, run down and AA Alicia Fox?

Cena is feuding with The Authority so he could at least mention it once in a while.

Or you know, beat up Triple H to get his wife to stop or something. At least PRETEND to care.

27 year old me finds all of the man on woman violence to be horrendous (I know I'm really going out on a limb here). But I'd be lying if I said 12/13 year old me didn't get a kick out of the Dudleyz powerbombing all the females through tables. I'm appalled when I look back on it now, but I guess I used to be a real dick.

Ditto for a lot of the Attitude Era stuff and the ECW violence. I used to think it was awesome, but I'd say that was a combination of me being younger and it all being somewhat new/different at the time.

Wasn't Maria Cena's on-screen girlfriend when he was feuding with Umaga?  Hence why he didn't come out sooner was odd

I quit once Benoit and Eddy were both dead. It was just too much with two of my all-time favorites being dead. I did rekindle my interest some in the lead up to the WrestleMania in Detroit, since I was attending that one live, but I always thought that would be a good stopping point for me. I then got back into it probably around 2010 or so. As best as I can tell, I really start remembering stuff right around the time with the Nexus angle started.

I've never been embarrassed to be a wrestling fan, but I will not deny there are moments where I have been exceedingly glad no one I knew was sitting next to me. The one that stands out in my mind the most was in ROH, when Larry Sweeney knocked out Allison Danger, pushed Bobby Dempsey on top of her and then forced Bobby to simulate rape while Sweeney screamed "suck her tits" over and over. The ROH crowd fucking lapped it up and I felt so grossly uncomfortable.

To add to the Rhino discussion, he has always been a guy Raven has gone out of his way to put over as a worker in his shoot interviews, saying that he is one of those guys like Kane where everything looks really good but doesn't actually hurt, and that he was a really safe guy to work with. I always thought that was interesting and put his piledrivers on various women in a new light for me. Keep in mind I'm not defending violence against women, it was just nice to know that he wasn't going out there and stiffing the shit out of someone's untrained wife.

Again I need to stop watching Cinema Sins

The day after that got posted one of my friends saw it and said some shit like "so at what point is this hobby no longer worth it?" But it wasn't close to as bad as the omega/9-yr-old thing.

I was at that show and I definately don't remember the "ROH crowd fucking lapping it up" as you put it. I remember mostly uncomfortable silence about the whole thing. The way you describe it, you'd think everyone was standing there with dicks in hand jerking off over it. I get it, ROH fans have never been popular on this board, but we're not all immoral dirtbags that advocate rape.

I'm honestly surprised that Vince hasn't redone Tammy's Smoky Mountain gimmick. Being a Hillary lover would get you as much heat now as it did in 1995.

Or being a feminist anti-Diva. Who'd naturally align herself with two non-Diva types and run wild on the divas.

I was also in the building that night and I have to echo your thoughts. I remember trying to figure out what was going on because the ROH acoustics were horrendous and I couldn't quite understand what Larry Sweeney was yelling about and I thought they might have been trying to recreate the HHH/Trish angle from Raw when Rock hit HHH in the back with a chair and HHH fell on top of Trish.

It wasn't until after the show that I remember a lot of people on the ROH board being pretty outraged at the whole thing when it was figured out that they were going for a risque angle to say the least.

Perhaps my section reacted differently, but I vividly recall the people surrounding me being enthused over the whole situation. Again, I was mortified. Nice Guy Eddie, I wasn't saying it in a way to try and put down ROH fans specifically. I have been to well over 50 ROH shows, most of which were during that time period. I was sharing a memory that I thought pertained to the discussion, I wasn't using the discussion as an excuse to be all like "lol ROHBots liek rape".

I haven't seen the show or that moment on tape at all. I wonder if watching it back would shed new light on my recollection.

I'm a total Spike Dudley mark but I got to ask who didn't have a good match with Spike Dudley?

The Dudleys. Repeatedly.  A bunch of meandering pointless brawls with all the same spots.

If WWE wanted to repackage Emma, they could probably use this gimmick. Just say that she's a Hillary Clinton fan who came here from Australia to attend Wellesley to follow in the footsteps of her idol. Team her with Paige as feminist heels.
