AEW - JULY 2024

Recommended Posts

To add some details to what I said above I'd also make the C2 winner prize where you can cash it in for any title at anytime. That way you're not forced to try and make a new main eventer every year. Let a midcarder win the C2 in an upset and use it to challenge for the international title. Let the women have a C2 also.

I'd also make the prize doe winning the Owen just a trophy. There's no need for the belts. They're a nice nod to Stampede and all that. But a trophy is fine for winning. The less belts there are, the more important all the ones that exist are.

I just think if you can make the ROH belt the secondary singles title, just do it, and scrap the others. There is a lot more history and prestige to that title than the randos they just made up.  Keep the TNT as a traditional "TV title" with open challenges like they've regularly done.

AEW World Title
ROH Heavyweight
AEW Tag
AEW Trios
AEW TNT

That is all you need, especially when random titles from abroad pop up regularly.

For the ladies, just the singles & tags. No TBS and ROH and ROH TV, etc...

They can dump the TV titles when they leave WBD. 😀

Looking back, the idea of naming two titles after your TV network was really dumb.  If they don't renew with WBD, will they just rename two belts, which have a lot of history, after the new TV partner?  Again, just stupid in retrospect.  I blame Cody.  Probably got the idea from a Superman comic or something.

Maybe they can unify some of these.  Instead of Battle for the Belts, have a TV special called Too Many Belts.

While we're on stupid ideas, I know Tony is nostalgic over Clash of the Champions and that's what Balltle of the Belts is supposed to be.  But it's an antiquated idea.  Clash was awesome because at that time, TV was mostly squashes, so they'd do some star vs star matches on cable, sometimes as a go-home show for a PPV.  But now your weekly show is name guys vs name guys, so there's no point.

I thought it was a bad idea from the start, because naming titles after the network that carries your shows in one market made them seem local and bush league. (Yes, I realize the US is almost certainly AEW's most lucrative market, and I expect by a substantial margin as well. But still.)

They can always pretend the "TNT" title was named for its explosiveness and has nothing to do with the TV network. The "TBS" title is more problematic, because The Baddies Section stopped being a thing when Jade Cargill left.

The 'ROH World Title' as a secondary title feels confusing to the average viewer. Why would your secondary title be branded 'ROH'? I'm with every single person that watches AEW - I didn't want another title when they introduced the 'All-Atlantic', now 'International', and I hated the introduction of the 'Continental'. I'd rather there were less AEW belts, but it is what it is. TKhan wants to protect everybody and let everybody be a champion. 4 Mens singles title belts isn't the end of the world, I can accept that, it's the ROH belts (and that beyond awful FTW title) that have stunk up the joint and reduced the meaning of said 4 championships. Eliminating ROH belts from AEWTV is a doable fix, but unfortunately it's not going to happen until ROH gets its own TV. I have no doubt TKhan feels he's keeping the ROH name alive by having them on AEWTV. Even if we can all clearly see how damaging it is.

The solution with ROH is what it was two years ago - have it on Max, a completely separate product with maybe a bi-annual "cross over" show with AEW to try to get more eyeballs to it. They could have both the backlog and new shows on it. I assume like everyone else the reason that never happened is WBD either flat out wasn't interested or offered peanuts. So for the last two years its been this weird show with no identity that TK doesn't know what to do with. I've been fairly vocal in the past that one of the mistakes they made last year was mixing ROH too much on Dynamite, making the show too unfocused. I think that's been mostly fixed but doesn't change the fact ROH still has issues.

I'm sure TK would love the opportunity to have his weekly ROHTV on Max, but I sense that's a wee bit easier said than done. I sorta like the idea of a big crossover show, but I'm not sure it would work with ROH being essentially developmental promotion. And I think ROH should be developmental. I'm completely with you on it needing to be a separate brand. I think everybody but the man who makes the decision wants that. I sense if the Arlington shows are successful(?) that it could lead to ROH existing as (at least a more) separate entity. We'll see. I sense Mark Briscoe, coming off the wear and tear of Blood n Guts will have good reason to drop the strap to Roddy at DBD. I like that for both Roddy and Briscoe. I am sorta wishfully thinking here, but I like the idea of Roddy/Taven/Bennett then sticking more to ROH. An exclusive to ROH set of Champions is sorta the dream. It would certainly help instill some meaning to the weekly TV.

I'm not sure I'd openly call ROH my "developmental" territory, but I'd sure book it like the last year or so of WWECW. Put the title on a veteran, rotate young and veteran challengers, and pair off vets and young guys you have plans for in tv feuds. Mark Briscoe's got Rod Strong as his next challenger. After him, have Takeshita come over and work heel against Briscoe and win the title. Run the rematch back, then bring in another veteran babyface to work Takeshita. Build up to Eddie/Takeshita, then start a new cycle. Same with tag teams. Bring in the Von Erichs to work Taven & Bennett, and so on.

To me, Blood & Guts 2024 is the least interesting out of all the Blood & Guts matches. Acclaimed stick out like a sore thumb and I don't like Jack Perry or the Young Bucks. I'm naively hoping it'll be the first not to go on top of the cage but I know that's not happening. See Darby Allin falling off it.

Sad but true. I like the match type but I like it a lot better when it feels more like a blood feud and the match is the "feud ender." This isn't a feud ender and has wrestlers in it that barely fit together, its just a vehicle to set up All In. I am sure it will be a fun match but it doesn't feel necessary.

This definitely feels like they were booking stuff and then said “oh shit we’re supposed to run Blood and Guts”.

I think plans changed or weren't properly in place to begin with surrounding the Elite/Khan angle. I suspect from the lack of tag title defenses that a Buck may have been injured along the way. I like the fanfare BnG generates, so I don't mean this as any sort of disrespect, but I find Wargames/BloodNGuts a bit/lot overrated. The Double Ring is clunky and the action gets A-D-D once enough team members are in. The whole concept is so tired with the absolute need for the heels to always win the coin toss. That said, the three previoius matches were fun, and exceeded my obvious low (or fairly reasonable) expectations. Tho, the first one had that rotten finish and the third had the even worse... Ibushi. I can certainly understand the criticisms going into this fourth installment, but this type of match with the talent of Mark Briscoe, Darby Allen, Swerve, Hangman, Okada and the Young Bucks is not likely to disappoint. Jack too. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Jack Perry v Luchasaurus Cage match kinda awesome? And the Bucks v Penta/Fenix in the Cage was particularly gnarly and awesome.

I assume this is the right place to post about this. Last night I got an email from Ticketmaster for the AEW Grandslam show at Arthur Ashe and I was looking at the availible seats and man I do not know why they are even bothering to run a show there. It looks like only the lower sections are on sale and everything up top will be closed off. I know it's a prestiege event for them, but judging by the ticket map...this will be the lowest attended show yet for them.

Isn't it pretty common for AEW events to start 'on sale' with the camera focused areas and open up as it goes along? Indeed it'll be interesting to see how Grand Salami does this year. Here's hoping the upward momentum carries them forth to a good card and good size house.

Right. They've been just having tv sides open at first. Nothing worse than having everything open in 20k seater then trying to get people to move from the seats they bought to clump together for camera side. Once they get within 500 or a 1000 of the section being sold out they open uo more aections.

I heard AEW is on HBOMax does it have full PPVs on it?

Say what now?  I just checked the app and there’s no AEW.

AEW appearing on Max with no fanfare on a day where the whole world is experiencing technical difficulties would be amazing.

EDIT: it’s apparently in some international markets but no US yet.

Oh I hope they do add PPVs because I've never ordered an AEW PPV and only a few Dynamites in full so I'd ssubscribe just watch all the PPVs and recommended matches like I did with WWE network and watch everything on demand.

I wonder if it's similar to WWE Network where it's available in other countries but on a different app here. It would suck if so but with the legalities of the world wouldn't surprise me.
