JULY 2016 WRESTLING DISCUSSION THREAD

Recommended Posts

I watched Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker in Hell in a Cell at the same named 2015 PPV. The event reminded me Alberto Del Rio beat John Cena for the WWE United States Championship ending the US Championship Open Challenge. Few people beat John Cena clean and Del Rio was added to that list.

Man, I like Alberto. That they're more concerned with screwing with his relationship with Paige than using him in a way that isn't LoN-level terrible is pretty much par for the course for modern WWE.

Isn't Del Rio still married to somebody though?  Or was just one of those weird rumors?

And the writing was on the wall for him from the start.  He could have been pretty hot coming in and did get a good reaction on his return.  But that whole MexAmerica thing was a huge failure and he just couldn't recover from that.  I wished he was just a good guy for some time, but instead ending up confusing the audience to the point they just stopped caring.

They've screwed the pooch with him in so many different ways. I mean they didn't even have to watch LU to figure out he's best as fiery babyface (just look at the Big Show Last Man Standing turn) or at the very least a rich, sleazy tweener who comes into the arena in baller rides. As a heel in WWE, he's been dead in the dirt from the jump.

Know what would be an awesome way to crown new Smackdown Live tag champions? A G-1 style tag league. Great way to have meaningful matches on TV,  have a schedule with matches we could look forward to, and something special for the their first branded network special.  One can dream.

So I went the GOUGE wrestling show at a brew pub in Fuquay Varina NC on Saturday, which was exactly like what you would expect for a free indy show in the dirt and stone parking lot of a brew pub. We and the wife sat next to a bunch of kids and we were getting into WOOing the chops, booing the heels and heckling the manager walking by. The kids were awesome (AWWW that HAD TO HURT!!!) but the greatest line of the night was when a few of the dad's came over and were asking the kids if they wanted to go inside and play cornhole or ping pong and the kids were like (paraphrasing) "Dad, do you see whats going on out here? NO." They stayed.

Tag teams haven't been given that kind of love in decades from the WWE.

The only tag team tournament that really sticks out for me was the Doc & Gordy Special where they just killed everyone on their way to the WCW Tag Team Championship... but didn't Gordy quit near the end?

ADR was involved in three great WWE matches in 2013, a LOADED year. The first LMS with Big Show on Smackdown, vs. Dolph Ziggler at Payback and against Christian at SummerSlam.

That was the NWA tag tournament that WCW did when Bill Watts was in charge in 1992. Williams and Gordy lost the NWA and WCW tag titles to Barry Windham and Dustin Rhodes before Gordy left WCW.

To be fair, after seeing how awesome and fired up Alberto El Patrón was in Lucha season one, and coming in with the clean win over Cena, I had a lot of optimism about Del Rio take 2 in the WWE. But then they stuck him with Zeb and it was all downhill from there. They could have had him as a world beater and continue the US title open challenge and make new guys look good, instead he traded the belt back and forth with Kalisto which made both men and the belt seem incredibly unimportant.

Now we have Rusev back to square one rebuilding the US title. Can you imagine how nuclear he'd be if he never lost to Cena at Wrestlemania and just kept it this whole time?

By all accounts Dos Caras is cool as fuck, this even came out on Konnan's podcast recently.

I'm 99% Alberto refused to put over my favorite wrestler in LU and he cried about his placement on Ultima Lucha and doing the job on twitter so much that he won't be back.  They're getting way better ratings this season than they did when he was on the show, but I could see the network pressuring them into hiring him back, too.
