No, he didn't  Really. You fail hard at reading comprehension.  Reread *everything*, without being amped to jump on someone for not speaking of iPhones as if they're made by Unicorns and powered by rainbows.  He's mentioning a design flaw, saying, rightfully, that it'll prevent him from buying this model, and he doesn't want to change ecosystems.  Understandbile.  While there are both versions, Androids to require a bit more setup to get it how you want it, especially if you're used to iPhones.

Phones bending is a design flaw that's horrible.  There are thinner phones that don't do that.  I have one.

...and other posters mentioned phones that bend as well.  The HTC One is an example.

The real trolls are the ones that post videos like 'Look everyone I put my brand new iPhone in a blender/liquid nitrogen/hit it with a hammer look what happened LOL.'

Not to mention that you have to re-buy all of those apps for an Android phone. I'm looking at 3 or 4 years of apps I would need to re-buy.

And at least with the antenna/grip of death issue, putting a protective band around the edge of the phone seemed to help. That was another design flaw that should have been caught during testing, but wasn't, and the it didn't get fixed until the next iterative release.

How many paid apps do you have?  Most of the popular apps are free.  The whole 'trapped in an ecosystem' argument is silly.

I find it hilarious that people get so bent out of shape over stuff like this.  I utilize the smart tablet/dumb phone system since I do not use my phone that often.  Instead of spending days whining about stuff I find a work around.

I write on my tablet, edit on either my tablet or PC, and then upload from the PC.  I have yet to find a problem that is not fixable within a few hours.

People get so bent out of shape about their smartphones/tablets/operating systems that you do sound like you are whining.

So you paid $5 for an app 3 years ago.  Guess what?  You probably got a lot more than $5 of value out of the app over that period of time.  Big deal, you have to pay an extra $5 for it to work on a different ecosystem.  Within six months you will more than likely get that $5 back.

Not really a gadget question, but I couldn't find a better thread.

Can anyone suggest a free program or website that "grabs" audio off of video sources? A google search turns up a lot, but it's hard to tell what's trustworthy.

For anyone who doesn't have a DVD drive on their laptop, do you miss it? Or have we reached the point where optical drives aren't necessary? I'm in need of a new laptop and I was contemplating getting one without an optical drive. I can't remember the last time I needed to use one but my memory is horrendous.

I have a Macbook Pro without a disc drive and don't miss it really.  The only reason I can think of using one would be to burn a data disc but USB sticks are pretty cheap and more efficient.

I don't miss it day to day.  I've had a few situations where I've needed to fire up an external drive though.

I was worried at first about not having that or an ethernet port, but it's been an issue so seldom and in such easy-to-anticipate situations I never worry about it now.

But, you know, if you're like a doctor who's constantly getting X-rays on Cd Rom or something...

What are you looking at?  My 11 inch mac air is about the most perfect computer I've ever used.

Thanks for the advice guys. You're making me feel easier about parting with the drive.

Just depends on what you use it for.  I need mine because I make blu-rays often enough that having to plug in an external drive that often would annoy me.  I don't use it for watching movies at all anymore, just making them.  But if you use one sometimes, just be sure to check the prices on them so you can add that to whatever the cost of the laptop is.

Announcement coming in a few days on the 15th in regards to the Nexus 6 and Nexus 8.  There's a lot of speculation but not sure if the release will be that day or 10/31.  The Nexus 5 released last year on 10/31 but that was also the day of the announcement so who knows.

What people are fairly certain about is that the Nexus 6 or Nexus X whatever they call it is made by Motorola and is based off of their most recent Moto X and has a 5.9" screen.  There was a benchmark test leaked recently that showed the performance being the best of any phone available.  People aren't sure about the price though.  The Nexus 4 was $299, the Nexus 5 was $349, and the Moto X currently off contract starts at $499.  I would imagine the thing will not be as cheap as previous releases and be over $400.

I'm quite certain I will be getting this phone the minute it releases.  Having a phone that's pure google is awesome and also getting the most recent updates as they come available is awesome as well.  I've been contemplating a jump to a large phone for a while as well and was looking at the Note 4.

The 6 & 9 are officially announced, and they're exactly what the leaks said.  Pricing hasn't been announced yet.

Android L is looking sexy as hell, though.

EDIT: The 6 is apparently $649 off-contract.
