2015 VIDEO GAME CATCH-ALL THREAD

I am super tempted to grab Wasteland 2 while it's $20 on the Humble store, but I have so many Western RPGs I got six hours into and didn't go back to that it feels like I'd be flushing money down the toilet.

I'm right there with you.  I love the idea of playing RPGs but I'm really not willing to invest that kind of time in video games anymore.  All of save folders have like five different saves with 5-10 hours on each because I'll stop playing for 6 months, forget where I was or what I was doing, and have to start over.

I love Starcraft but I've never bought the second game.  So, Mr Up-to-Date bought Starcraft 2 and the first expansion to help me christen my new rig.  It's more Starcraft, which sounds like damning with faint praise, but like I said, I really love this series, so...

Don't neglect to buy the Merc contracts between missions.  You absolutly need them to pass a mission at some point.

And if you dare to venture into Multiplayer, there are actual tutorials and the vs. AI maps actually prep you properly.  I mean, they'll be a cap because there are just guys that are machines, but you can at least be competitive at your level, since it teaches you the proper orders and such.

I started playing Tomb Raider again as I have the incentive to free up space on my HD.

God - I forgot how brutal some of the death scenes in this game are.

I finally got to the one that freaked Conan O'Brien out...

I'm actually hella pissed that the Tomb Raider sequel is a XB-1 exclusive. Loved the game and was looking forward to continuing.

Timed exclusive. It'll be on PS4 eventually.

I will admit that I have given up looking for the extra shit and doing the tombs.

I want to spent more time with the game because I really do like it but I don't got time for that shit.

Anyone play Project Cars yet? I will probably get an XBone later this year when Halo 5 comes out and I'll probably get Forza at the same time. Until then, I need a racing fix and I'm intrigued by Project Cars. A couple of the reviews I looked at mentioned there being a decent selection of cars, but not an actual count of those cars or if they're close to as customizable as Forza's cars. I don't care about vinyls and shit like that, but changes to the body, suspension, engine, etc. would be nice. I also couldn't find any mention of downloading tuning configurations like you could with Forza.

It's a relatively small number of cars - 80 or 90, I think - but super-hardcore on the tuning and simulation aspects.

At least that's my understanding.

X-Box One outsold the PS4 in April, which is surprising to me. Was there a price drop or bundle or big exclusive that I'm forgetting about?

People getting ready for Halo 5 in a few months.

There's still great deals for the Xbone on the reg. More so that than the PS4. Dell keeps running their absurd deal, which I may finally bite on, that gets you the Xbone, Halo MCC, KI, State of Decay and a $100 Dell gift card for $380. I hesitate to say that with the gift card, the bundle is priced less than $300, but it sure feels that way and the gift card can be used towards other games. If they do pre-orders, you could conceivably use the gift card to pre-order Halo 5 and pick up a year of Live.

About 2 weeks ago, I decided to finally give The Last of Us another try. You may recall that I detested it on the PS3 and gave up roughly a third of the way through the game. Bix has been on my case ever since about it and I eventually picked up the remastered version on the PS4 for cheap ($13) to give it another shot. And I'm now roughly halfway through, so...

Well, playing through the first third again still sucked. It was pure drudgery. "It's a stealth game!" people say. Sure. Except it's not. Oh sure, once in a great while you can use stealth but mostly you're forced into non-stealth situations. And oh, hey look, yet another attack coming from out of a room that I just cleared out. That ROCKS.

After that, however, the game HAS picked up. Some really good stealth and tense situations. Of course, you still get the "attacked from an empty room" thing a couple times. And I gave up on my play session last night because the controls all went to hell for some reason. No slow spinning around, it was moving me in huge chunks with the camera swinging all over the place. Going into the crafting menu, it would simply not respond to clicks at times. Really, really weird.

So, then, what do we have?

THE GOOD:

- The remastered graphics on PS4 are a gigantic improvement over the PS3. No more screen tearing, texture screwups or whatever. And it moves a lot faster and smoother (I'm using the "try to run at 60fps mode" instead of locking at 30)

- The modeling of Joel is incredible. Really detailed and really, really realistic.

- Molotov cocktails rule.

- The sound is well done

- Some really great moments, like Ellie finding a joke book and reading jokes to you. It's a nice contrast of something amusing and happy against the sad apocalypse you find yourself in. It shows Ellie in a nice, sweet, kinda sad moment.

THE BAD:

- For all the hype about the story, halfway through the game it's razor-thin. Escort a kid kinda like your daughter because she might hold the key to immunity. Big deal.

- The mechanics of the game are all over the place. Am a big fan of Joel simply refusing to punch or swing his melee weapon at times for no apparent reason. Or missing even though his target is well within range. And I already mentioned the stealth stuff above.

THE UGLY:

- The Last of Us commits one of my pet peeves - artificially limiting the amount of stuff you can carry for no apparent reason. Like right now, I can only carry something like 14 shotgun shells. REALLY? You can shove that much in Ellie's pockets and have room left over.

- As great as Joel's model and animation are, Ellie's aren't at that level. Instead of looking, she looks like...a video game character. Hard to describe but it's just not the same quality.

- The game is incredibly short. I'm halfway through a not-fast playthrough and I'm at 6-1/2 hours. And a LOT of that is...non-gaming. Tons of cutscenes and stuff you don't have control over. And lots (and lots and lots and lots) of just crawling around every environment to try and find another damn rag to make a molotov cocktail. To a degree, I get it - foraging for resources makes sense. But it's really, really obvious that it was done here to pad the game and keep you from playing through in 8 hours.

So where am I at on this game right now? I hate it less than before but I still think it's incredibly overrated. And I actually really enjoyed the stuff right before my last session where the controls and camera all went in the crapper. Still, if I end up running into those problems again, I'll just give up and go watch the rest of the story online. It's simply not good enough to deal with a camera careening all over the place.

Went to Pinballz (Austin's best arcade) with friends tonight. Saw Faster, Harder, More Challenging Q*Bert in the wild for the first time, played a ton of Atari Star Wars and saw just how obscene ticket games have gotten in the past few years. Pac-Man Chomp Mania is just evil.

Also played the Batman game from I think 2014, a driving title where you get your pick of a dozen different Batmobiles (I took the BatB one, unsurprisingly.)  All in all I had a lot of fun, but I wish they had more classics and took better care of the ones they do have.

After a couple of run-thrus, I'm putting aside Dragon Age until Jaws of Hakkon comes out for PS4.

Started Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep from the KH 2.5 HD remix. This is one I never had a chance to play since I didn't have a Vita. I've managed to avoid most spoilers, so all I know is that these three kids are connected somehow to the three from the main games. I'm about an hour in and I'm already sure my heart is going to get stomped into a million pieces.

There really are parts of Fallout 3 where there are no good choices. Playing through The Pitt and yeah...don't feel good about either way things can play out.

Also, I've put another 10 hours into this game over the past few weeks. Soon at 200 hours total.
