I thought X-Men would make more money in its first 7 Days.  A bit concerning for me with Transformers and How to Train Your Dragon 2 still out there.

Damn at Neighbors making over 120 million already.  There always seems to be at least one adult, usually R-rated movie that does really well each summer (21 Jump Street, The Other Guys, Pineapple Express, This is The End or The Heat, etc.)

Despite the so-so reviews, Maleficent's box office appears to be tracking well this opening weekend.  Well, according to those box office sites.  A Million Ways To Die in The West is definitely not going to make as much as MacFarlane's Ted.

As of this posting

Maleficent - 47% (97 Reviews - 46/51)

Million Ways West - 33% (98 Reviews - 32/66)

Edge of Tomorrow - 94% (31 Reviews - 29/2)

Need Edge of Tommorow to drop in the RT list and not make money. I had it #15 in that list. Didn't do any research this time around. Only films I did know about, comic book movies.

All You Need Is Kill is a brilliant novella even though the whole time travel thing is a shopworn sci-fi trope.

If Doug Liman can manage to get that story across in Edge of Tomorrow without Tom Cruise's ego getting in the way, it should be a kick ass movie.

Sorry, bro.

Funny thing. Despite the terrible reviews, Malificent got an "A" cinemascore.

The RT blurb pretty much says it's not all bad - great Angelina performance, great special effects, but then the rest of the movie (like the plot) sucks.  I guess those first two things were what people paid to see.

Edge of Tomorrow is still holding on to its strong Rotten Tomato score at 89 percent.  I think it will go down a couple more percentage points, but it's still going to hurt a few people's lists.  I doubt many people put it high on their RT ranking list.  Tom Cruise saves

BRACKET BUSTER...(you know what I mean)...

22 Jump Street as the #1 best reviewed movie of the summer!? That's some big balls right there.

Disagree. I think it's a pretty safe move.

Well received first film (85%). Directors/writers (Lord & Miller) who seemingly can't do any wrong.

IMO, it's only barely ballsy cause HTTYD2 is still available.

Other than that, I think it's a great top choice at four weeks into the pool (thus limiting Lacelle's choices).

22 Jump Street is at 91% so far with 10 fresh and 1 rotten. Well done.

I GOT SOME REALLY GOOD NEWS AND SOME BAD NEWS

Good News: No one has to watch the shitbomb that will be Jupiter Ascending until February 2015 because post production wasn't complete.

Bad News: Edge of Tomorrow isn't tracking so well at the box office. Heading for a $30 million weekend against an almost $180 million budget.

Cruise is still a big draw overseas though isn't he?

At this point I don't really get why most tracking sites treat domestic box office as the be all end all, though it makes tracking this game much simpler since every region tends to have a different release date.

Getting crushed by Maleficent so far only drawing $20 million in 37 markets.

BTW, WB just hired Drew Crevello (one of the execs behind the X-Men franchise). So they potentially won't be cranking out movies like those mentioned above. It'll just be DCU and Melissa McCartney being an uncouth, antisocial fat person every summer.

Yeah, I just read about Jupiter Ascending getting pushed back into February 2015.  Whoa.  Lacelle's list is saved!

I'm glad we only do the U.S. market for the box office list too.  It's probably not fair for some of yall, but shit would be bananas if we had to try to factor in movie taste for each world region.

Aaargh that means I'm gonna have to do all kinds of spreadsheet nonsense to tally people's points once we get to mid-July.  Thanks for the heads up though.
