  1. A friend in Tokyo just sent me this picture. Tanahashi has his own special Zima now!! I think @D.Zand @The Naturalhave posted about it already but this is the first time I've seen it in the wild. Haven't found it in my hometown yet.

  2. More Ben Chemoul. Just look at this. The hand up to distract, the leg kicked back so he can hook the leg, the spin out for momentum. Just awesome. We've seen some torpedo spots in the corner, but I've never seen someone quite do what he does here with the angle of impact.

  3. It's a House rep, not a VP shortlister, so I don't think there'd be much vetting going on. Maybe by the opposition party, but again, House race. I also don't think most voters would find someone's father being closely related to be relevant. You can't control who your father is. This was funnier when I imagined Sweet Stan Lane stopping at a local Colorado Safeway and buying two gallons of baby oil so that he could inadvertently create the lady who owns the gun restaurant with numerous health violations. Let's not take this hilarious scenario away.

  4. My friend, we know that there's no poli on this board for a reason, so I'll just leave this here and shut up. I lived through two terms of Richard Fucking Nixon and made it through to the other side. This too will pass. We have a long way to go, and it may seem like things are worse, but that's the first step of combatting a problem, realizing that you have one. Today we're having conversations about shit that was getting swept under the carpet ten years ago. Yeah, the progress is maddeningly slow and I'm not going to live to see any kind of utopia, but I will be able to say that things are looking brighter than they did when I got here. Just for one example we no longer have grade school kids practicing hiding under their desks in case of a nuclear attack. An example of foolishness on the grand scale that would be hard to replicate.

  5. A conversation about Lauren Boebert being Stan Lane's illegitimate child dovetailing into a conversation about board members faking their own deaths can only happen on THIS (motioning around myself for no reason) message board! James

  7. Nah, it will only be perfect if paternity is determined by a wrestling match instead of a DNA test. The blow-off to this angle is going to be Stan Lane vs. .... um.... Michael Hayes in a "Who's Your Daddy"? match on PPV. It will all be a fakeout, though. At the next tv taping, Steve Keirns is going to be brought in and he'll cut a promo admitting that he's the father and he framed Lane for breaking up the Fab Ones. I'm legit curious how you fake your death on a message board? And how did the member get caught out? Did someone PM him to ask if he was really dead and get a reply back?

  8. I came here for the "Sweet" Stan Lane is Lauren Boehbert's secret father discussion. There's also a YouTube post floating around where Lauren herself writes a YouTube comment on I believe a video about professional powerboat racing that The Fabulous One hosted after his wrestling career ended. Everything about this is perfect pro wrestling. I've been really fascinated by Lauren Boehbert since she came to fame as she a historic lunatic. Of course an 80s wrestling legend being tied into this would happen. A+ booking and I absolutely need this to be true.

  13. My major fear for Usman is if he tries to run back the kickboxing style he used against Colby, as Burns actually has power unlike Covington. While Usman has a good chin and great recuperative ability, Burns could jump on something should he stun Usman. It's boring, but Usman's best and safest strategy is to grind out Burns along the cage. This is true of all of his fights of course. The vivisection guys brought up Burns' list of opponents and how none of them have been effective pressure fighters and pressure is Usman's specialty. So much points towards Usman but of course Burns is the more fluid striker and of course is dangerous on the ground so it's not as if he doesn't have avenues.

  14. My wife is in a full-out crying fight with her mother (who thinks the Earth is flat, 'nuff said) about the result of today's joke of a trial and I can't say loud enough that I'm so sick of how things are right now in this country. I'm doing my best to think about all the shit we've moved past - the hundreds of years of slow-moving progress against all odds - and trying to stay positive, but it's fucking hard. Hopefully y'all are doing well as can be despite the bullshit

  21. I didn't say they're bad takes. Shit, I probably agree with most of them. I'm making it clear that you are also perfectly capable of "nitpicking" and "talking stuff down." I even bolded the part of your post that I was addressing! Maybe I should have written more for you. But since your new board gimmick is feigning illiteracy, I didn't want to overwhelm you. I don't care about whether I agree or disagree with any of those takes. But you should realize that the "nitpicks" you complain about in this section of the board are beliefs as sincerely held by any of the nitpickers as your takes are by you. And you'd not respond well to anyone insinuating that any of your feelings on any of those matters is less valid or don't have a place on the board because it's "talking stuff down." You come in here and talk about fun and humour and enjoyment. And I take all that in the spirit that you want more positivity. Yet you're coming in here and slagging people off for their beliefs. You're being a massive hypocrite and spreading as much negativity as anyone. And worst of all, you're being shallow as fuck and making zero effort to address any point. If you have no interest in what's happening here, that's fine. But instead of scrolling past this thread or putting in any effort or addressing any point, you've taken the other option of just talking shit while pretending you want more positivity. It's goddamn sad. You accuse me of making a personal attack rather than wanting to have a conversation. Nah. I take aim at you because you're capable of the same "nitpicking" and "talking stuff down" you'd slag some of us off for, and I was keen to demonstrate that. You've made it clear you're not interested in engaging in the conversation because you don't want to be involved in an "essay contest." Which is fine. I'm just incredibly disappointed that you'd feel compelled to talk down people who want to have this conversation. I'll leave it there. If only because I'm worried that from your perspective four short paragraphs might look like War and Peace. I don't want to be the bitter old man pointing at people and laughing wrongheadedly at how they need a safe space. But this sure makes it tempting.

  23. Took my MIL & BIL to get their first shots today. My wife and mom have both had their first. I've gotten both shots. In just a few weeks, my family here in Spokane will all be done. The process for most of the community here is a total mess, at least for signing up. Fortunately, my mom heard Providence was having appointments today. I jumped online a couple days ago to sign up the MIL and BIL and it was extremely easy. Actually getting the shots has been very smooth and easy for everybody.

  37. Those are good gripes! That's totally valid criticism, particularly if (as it clearly is here) it's intended constructively. Those ar two ways that AEW could improve without changing what they are as a promotion, two ways for AEW to be the best AEW it can be. And, yeah, long may AEW continue! You make a lot of points, and I'd like to respond to all of them but I am short on time. So, I have picked three. 1) I appreciate that. We don't often see eye to eye but we both generally make the effort to listen to actually hear what the other is saying, I think, which is a good thing. That generally seems to be the case on these boards, which is why I come here more than any other wrestling site. 2) That's not where my logic falls apart. That's the strength of my argument. GLOW is a superb example. There are things to like about GLOW, and there are things to dislike. There are good takes to have about GLOW and there are bad takes. If someone's take on GLOW was "GLOW is OK but they'd be better if they took themselves less seriously, if the wrestlers had easily-identifiable gimmicks to set them apart from each other, and if it was brighter and more colourful" then that is obviously an insane take. But that is not what we are talking about here. What we are talking about here is, "GLOW would be better if it was more of an Americanized GAEA. The matches need to be 15 minute plus, and harrowing in their stiffness and intensity." I'd argue that is an equally bad take. I love GAEA. I'd love an English-language GAEA-style promotion. Stiffness and intensity are good! But... that ain't what GLOW is. GLOW is never, ever going to be that. Arguing that, week after week, on some hypothetical GLOW thread, is just pissing into the wind. 3) I honestly wonder where this opinion, which you have voiced more than once, comes from. I have never read anyone on here telling you to shut up. People asked HustlerofCulture to shut up, and for good reason. Maybe I've been missing it? Maybe you hear it a lot elsewhere? I do sometimes see people asking you to have better takes. I sometimes do so myself. Maybe it's psychologically easier to hear "have better takes" as "shut up?" For what it's worth, I think lot - maybe most -of your takes are, in fact, really good. Well thought out and well presented, and they seem to be received as such here as well. Only time to respond properly to one point, and I've chosen this one. It's absolutely not on you, or whomever, if you believed that AEW was going to go that route. It's not on you if you felt let down that they went in a different direction. They did, more or less, break a promise there. I'd argue, however, that it is on whomever if their opinion of AEW is still based around that broken promise over a year into their run. As I said, it's probably time to consider retiring that particular take. Let's use Seinfeld as an example this time. The original premise of Seinfeld was that it was about life as a stand up comedian. The show would start with Seinfeld doing a bit from his act, then you'd see what happened in his life that gave him the idea for that bit. People were always asking Seinfeld where he got his ideas, this show was going to answer those questions. But, it quickly went in another direction. So, if we are on a hypothetical Seinfeld board, and a guy is going on every week about how "The Chinese Restaurant" or "The Parking Garage" are not about stand up at all... is that a good take? Again, I'd argue that our hypothetical guy (or another hypothetical guy who keeps yelling about how Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer need to learn a lesson and hug it out at the end of every episode and why can't they understand that is how sitcoms work) are just pissing into the wind... those are bad takes, right? Those hypothetical guys are, I feel, missing out on the joy of some great TV comedy in favour of nursing a grudge. I am in no way trying to argue that Seinfeld or AEW can't be criticized. I'm trying to argue that some criticism is interesting, amusing, valid, constructive, conversation-generating, or whatever, and other criticism is lazy, counterproductive and/or just pissing into the wind. And, again, most of the takes here on DVDVR are the former. Pissing into the wind type takes are relatively rare, here. Can confirm! Even the bad takes here are not that bad, and usually they are backed u by some well-written arguments as well. It's great that there are diverse opinions here, and there are plenty of areas where AEW can grow and be more than "more than WWE" Agree. It's worth pointing out from time to time that AEW is way better than WWE in so many ways, but it can't be the be-all and end-all of our discussion if we want that discussion to be interesting. This is a good and nuanced take. There are upsides and downsides to so many booking decisions and it is all a precarious balancing act. Giving us more of one thing means giving us less of something else in most cases. Longer reigns are good, but by definition longer reigns means fewer champions. I like this kind of take, personally, way more than I like takes that only consider one side of the argument. Couldn't agree more. It's what I feel pro wrestling should be, at its best. I hate - I despise -corporatized LCD over-standardization in all aspects of life and I particularly despise it in pro wrestling (which I think should be one of the remaining bastions of the wild and free). I'll have more to say on this later, most likely. But yes absolutely that right there is so much of why I love AEW. Generally I disagree with "AEW owes it to me to explain everything on Dynamite" coming from people who don't have time or can't be bothered to watch Dark and BTE and so on. I certainly don't always have time to watch every minute of everything, but busy grandpas like me are not AEW's main target audience. I think it's absolutely fair for them to ask their fans to watch their YouTube shows in order to stay fully informed. I think it's mostly a good business decision. Creates a sense of being "in" on their thing if hardcore fans know more than casuals. I thin they are right to play to the hardcore base in preference to trying to court the casuals (though they try to do at least some of both on any given show). That being said,Excalibur says “Darby requested this match due to his old rivalry/friendship with Janela, check out this weeks BTE for more on their history” is a good, easy, constructive fix that they should consider implementing. Can confirm. I don't get takes that ask for AEW to be more same-old same-old. (those are also relatively rare here on DVDVR but they do exist here and elsewhere). For me,those takes are like the hypothetical person complaining that the Seinfeld gang never hug it out. They might think that they are trying to make the "product" better, but in fact they are just trying to turn something interesting into something they are more comfortable with or more like what they are used to. So very, very true! In fact, it's usually a sign that the person doing so is in fact quite wrong. ? So true. It's impossible to please everyone and the target keeps moving anyway. that's why it's best just to be true to yourself. Gotta go! I'll try to get to the rest later.

  38. Well putting aside the fact that pointing out the inequities black QBs face in the league vs. white QBs is about the coldest take one could have - Brissett played two years (20 games worth) before being giving that deal as opposed to one playoff game that was a loss and said white QB got hurt in thus continuing his streak of getting hurt in every single game he has played in the NFL. If I was gonna hot take on that specific offer it would be because Jim Irsay was a drunk

  39. Thanks for asking, @The Natural. I'm moving this convo from the DC thread... Oh man, Nat, you have no idea how good of timing you have. I literally JUST read a couple Spidey stories on my lunch break. ASM #121-122.......The Night Gwen Stacy Died. Before we get there, let me backtrack for a minute. i've been reading 1-2 comics a day. took a couple sidetracks when stories intersected with Spidey (the first dozen or so issues of Daredevil, Astonishing Tales #1&2 [KaZar/Kraven story], some Marvel Team-Up where Spidey or his villains were involved, that sort of thing). I'm really digging this journey a lot. I was surprised at how hot-tempered Pete can be early on, especially while dealing with Flash. Ditto the times he gets all jealous and emotional when he thinks he'll lose Gwen to Flash (or anybody else). Mary Jane as a side character and party girl that's always around is also something i didn't expect. The stories have mostly been solid and really do feel like they build on each other. He never beats a villain the same way twice, and that actually gets referenced as history. Fascinating read for late 60s/early 70s cape comics. THIS particular storyline has been amazing. From the way Green Goblin has been treated so far, to Harry's drug trip making it seem like he'd be the one to die, to Pete constantly getting sidetracked before he can get back to Gwen, was note perfect. The death is shocking (or would have been at the time, obviously in 2021 not so much...) and you can really feel Pete's emotions coming out. I had no idea Goblin died here, or that his death in the first Tobey Maguire movie was ripped straight off this page. And that epilogue with MJ is SO DAMN PERFECT. all the feels. Sidnote, I didn't realize it happened so soon (basically immediately!) after Stan Lee was off the book- curious if there's more to that story. If i wasn't in this for the long haul before now, i certainly would be now.
