The Box Office Thread

It's way way out ahead of Avatar at this point, but you have to remember there isn't another movie of the 21st century comparable to Avatar in box office. Not just the total money, but the way it held. It opened strong (77 million, then a record for best original property opening weekend ever. That record wasn't broken until Inside Out this summer) but not legendarily so. But it held virtually all of its first weekend take in week two. And it just kept holding for three months or so.

Avengers and Jurassic World both got way ahead of Avatar's pace (though less so, obviously, than Star Wars) but ran out of steam without getting particularly close (both are more than $100 million below.)

Star Wars has the advantage of being an end of year film (as did Avatar) which usually means lower openings and stronger holds, due both to less pressure to see it right away and less competition. Clearly, step A didn't happen.

In short, Star Wars looks like a shoe-in now, but it'll be a lot easier to tell in another week or so.

If I had to bet, I'd say it makes the record domestic, but it still needs another 320 million roughly (going into Saturday) and that's a lot of money (nearly as much as Furious 7 made domestic, for perspective) to just assume will come.

The big question is "did it burn off all the demand the first two weeks?"

Star Wars Box Office Record Porn!

Earlier this year Jurassic World set a record with 106 million dollars in its second weekend. The Force Awakens brought in 153 estimated.

Now sitting at 544 million, it has blown by Age Of Ultron to be Disney's #1 and the overall #2 film this year domestic, and needs only a bit over 100 million more to pass JW.

It is now the highest grossing Star Wars film (non-adjusted, of course) and has passed The Dark Knight for 5th all-time domestic.

It also broke JW's record for fastest to 500 million by over a week.

And it crossed the worldwide 1 billion mark in record time as well.

Yeah, last week the Sunday numbers wound up way higher than anticipated.

But this brings disappointing to a whole new level, even compared to Dark Knight Rises and Age of Ultron being "disappointing."

It's the best second weekend ever, by more than 40 million dollars.

Yes.

But apparently Star Wars has never been a big deal in China. The original trilogy never had a theatrical run there until this year, and the entire prequel trilogy made less than 20 million combined iirc.

Disney has been pushing the hell out of it in the buildup, so we'll see if that paid off in a few weeks.

Well, if they had Daniel Craig walk across Pinewood (from the Spectre set to the Star Wars set) to do his cameo, there's no reason Big Dave* couldn't have done the same thing. Drax the Destroyer in Star Wars = all the money.

On the other hand, A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far, Far Away. Guardians is set now, and the Riddick chronicles are set far future. So you'd need a time machine too.

* I'm surprised neither Bautista or Cena (he only likes 3 things in life. Nikki Bella, working out and muscle cars. He's made for Fast & Furious movies) have been in a Fast & Furious movie yet. Is it that they think Rock fulfils the Wrestling quota or something?

Star Wars barely crossed over 600 Million in the movie's 12th Day. I can't imagine a scenario it doesn't beat Avatar domestic, it is just too far ahead. It may not have the highest 5th, 6th, etc. weekend but it isn't going to matter. I went and saw it today at 9 AM and the theater was full. I am mostly curious if it somehow does 1 billion domestic, 800 million is a given at this point as far as I'm concerned.

Worldwide is another issue, Star Wars isn't as big of a deal in a lot of other countries so I don't think it will pass Avatar there. Should beat Jurassic World no problem, 2 billion is probably a good high-end goal.
