Hunger Games is huge here but Bond is bigger overseas. Like Fast. Which is a shame because Fast should be #1 everywhere.

And this proving very true. In 3 weeks domestic, Mockingjay Part 2 is already more than a hundred million ahead of Specter's five week total, but it's still trailing worldwide (where Spectre did open a bit earlier than here) but about $260 million.

  • 2 weeks later...

Better question: Can it break the all time total weekend top twelve combined record of $266 million before the other eleven movies are even counted

Down goes the first record, BTW, Deathly Hallows Pt 2's Thursday preview screening record of 43.5 destroyed by 13.5 million!

New record!

(With caveat that HP only had midnight screenings, not the large chunk of Thursday evening and night Start Wars got)

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows did 91 million and change on Friday, the standing record. Estimate for Star Wars TFA is 120.5 million. Which means even discounting the Thursday preview screenings, it did over seventy million Friday.

250 for the weekend is definitely in play, and then we look to see how it holds in the chase for Avatar.

Also new record!

The previous all time best December weekend was the first Hobbit movie at just under 85 (and best December day was also Hobbit at 37) but those records they're was never a doubt if they would fall.

Alvin and the Chipmunks barely beat out Sisters for 2nd and 3rd

14.4 million to 13.4

Alvin was on like 600 more theaters so basically the kids movie factor helped edge that into 2nd (so Sister's per theater average was like a 1K higher than Alvin)

That's interesting. Does Star Wars have that "sweet deal" with China that Universal seems to have? I can't imagine Jurassic World being a more popular worldwide property.

No idea. I'm pretty surprised too.

So, Box Office Mojo updated Star Wars' domestic number to $247 million, which puts its Worldwide to $529, beating Jurassic World by $3 million without China.

Avatar, we comin' for you!
