Brian Fowler
Hunger Games is huge here but Bond is bigger overseas. Like Fast. Which is a shame because Fast should be #1 everywhere. And this proving very true. In 3 weeks domestic, Mockingjay Part 2 is already more than a hundred million ahead of Specter's five week total, but it's still trailing worldwide (where Spectre did open a bit earlier than here) but about $260 million. Death From Above
The only box office question for Star Wars: Will it enter the top 10 grossing films of the year in two days or three?
Brian Fowler
Better question: Can it break the all time total weekend top twelve combined record of $266 million before the other eleven movies are even counted Down goes the first record, BTW, Deathly Hallows Pt 2's Thursday preview screening record of 43.5 destroyed by 13.5 million! odessasteps
I was shocked driving by one of the local multiplexes that the parking lot was only 1/3 to 1/2 full at 4:30 ish. I'd have expected a jam packed lot.
Brian Fowler
New record! (With caveat that HP only had midnight screenings, not the large chunk of Thursday evening and night Start Wars got) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows did 91 million and change on Friday, the standing record. Estimate for Star Wars TFA is 120.5 million. Which means even discounting the Thursday preview screenings, it did over seventy million Friday. 250 for the weekend is definitely in play, and then we look to see how it holds in the chase for Avatar. Brian Fowler
Also new record! The previous all time best December weekend was the first Hobbit movie at just under 85 (and best December day was also Hobbit at 37) but those records they're was never a doubt if they would fall. _MJ_
This might be a good weekend to go see Creed. Anyone who had doubts Star Wars winning the box office race at the start of the year....yeah. Jurassic Park did make a lot of money but...yeah. odessasteps
This might be a good weekend to go see Creed. If you could have a separate line, etc, maybe. Pity the poor folks who want to see Sisters and get stuck in the SW undertow.

Kevin Wilson
Not sure how I feel about 7 PM Thursday airings counting for Friday. I mean money is money but for records, what if the next big blockbuster starts at 5 PM, then 3 PM... if you are going to keep records there has to be something official.
Brian Fowler
Incidentally, if you separate them, it doesn't get the Friday record... But it breaks Revenge of the Sith's all-time Thursday record.
Brian Fowler
$238 million, destroying Jurassic World's record, but if estimates hold it won't get the international or worldwide records JW set earlier this year.
Niners Fan in CT
That's interesting. Does Star Wars have that "sweet deal" with China that Universal seems to have? I can't imagine Jurassic World being a more popular worldwide property.
RIPPA
Alvin and the Chipmunks barely beat out Sisters for 2nd and 3rd 14.4 million to 13.4 Alvin was on like 600 more theaters so basically the kids movie factor helped edge that into 2nd (so Sister's per theater average was like a 1K higher than Alvin)

The Z
If you can trust IMDB, Star Wars doesn't get released in China until January 9th. So maybe that has something to do with it. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2488496/releaseinfo
Brian Fowler
That would explain it pretty well. So, wait, it got within 8 million WITHOUT FUCKING CHINA?!? Jesus, all your box-office are belong to Star Wars

Kuetsar
This weekends box office reminds me of one of my favorite "Cousin Eddie" lines, from Vegas vacation: "Clark I haven't seen a beating like that since someone stuffed a banana down my pants and turned a monkey loose". . . .
