MOVIE COMMENT CATCH-ALL THREAD

Colin Farrell is good in the 1st remake. Just wish they would have built up his introduction like Sarandon's in the original. Hey, your neighbor Jerry is a vampire. Cool, thanks.

And David Tennant's Peter Vincent had that horrible twist.

Really, parents killed by a the vampire. Cliche much? Why would a vampire leave a survivor. Dandridge recognized him. Even if he got away, why go to Vegas and not stay low key? Stupid, Doctor.

Like I postedearlier , after watching the new reboot, the Farrell version got a couple of points added to it's score.

Another night, another Netflix movie:

Fightville - Yet another in a long line of "behind the scenes" MMA documentaries.  This one tracks guys in Louisiana, most specifically Dustin Poirier and promoter Gil Guillory.  Documentary actually is very good and pretty much all of the guys coming out looking like pretty decent guys.  I knew nothing about any of the people involved beforehand and know only what I learned watching the doc but ended up liking them all.  Some good moments, like one of the gyms using guys to pound on fighters who don't show up for their training regularly, including one time where Poirier beats up on a friend.  The friend takes his licks like a pro and understands he was simply being taught a lesson.  Good stuff.  Anyway, I recommend this one pretty highly - 8.5/10.

Just got an e-mail saying that season 9 of The Office is now on Netflix.  Looks like I'll be watching that now!

Criterion is having a 50% off flash sale at their website. It's only 24 hrs. Just in case some of you wanted to get rid of your money.

Goddammit.

I just dumped everything in my cart that I really WannaWanna...and before the sale code it comes out at $280.

Even at 50% I can't justify that.  What to keep and what to cut.  Here is my WannaWanna list.  I have 15 hourse to pick, like....three of these:

BRANDED TO KILL

TOKYO DRIFTER

TO BE OR NOT TO BE

WINGS OF DESIRE

HOUSE (Obayashi)

LE SAMOURAI

KWAIDAN

JIGUKO

KURONEKO

THE LIVING SKELETON

THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL

Are you a Blu-Ray guy? Because I'm putting off Le Samourai for what I feel will be an eventual Blu upgrade. Otherwise Le Samourai for sure.

I love Bunuel, so Exterminating Angel would be next out of you selection.

I love Seijun Suzuki so of course at least one of those two movies. I own Tokyo Drifter and it's fucking great, he really starts playing with noir tropes and does some cutting stuff knowing that you know what happened so why explain it. Branded to Kill is him in total FUCK IT mode, and it's a noir fever dream that cannot be forgotten. So if you want something more comprehendable - Tokyo Drifter, if you want to see him lose his shit and tell Nikkatsu to eat a turd - Branded to Kill.

Kuroneko is pretty damn rad. I think I liked Onibaba better, but it still features some Shindo goodness. There's one shot of a cat lady jumping to the ground that blew my face off. I would totally own it, but it's further down my "WannaWanna"

Jingoku starts off really eerie. Once shit goes down, the final act is just a torture phantasmagoria. Lots of screaming and wincing. It was more fun to see once, and I'd probably only need to watch it again for research.

Haven't seen the others.

Fuck.  I just nurpled my credit card.

Pulled the trigger on:

BRANDED TO KILL

TOKYO DRIFTER

WINGS OF DESIRE

HOUSE (Obayashi)

KWAIDAN

JIGUKO

KURONEKO

THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL

The good news.  My Halloween viewing just took a distinct turn toward old Japanese ghost movies.

I really wish they had Kind Hearts and Coronets on blu-ray. I really shouldn't be buying anything, but that would be a guaranteed pick for me. As it is, trying to talk myself out of Branded to Kill and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp.

The Colin Farrell Fright Night is awesome because Colin Farrell just steals the entire thing effortlessly.

The only thing I wanted when I saw the previews for that movie was to see McLovin die. Not that I have anything against the guy, I actually think he's a pretty decent actor, but still... you put McLovin in a monster movie I want to see bad things happen to him. Plus, yeah, Farrell carries the thing easily.

My October horror-movie watching has been shanghaied by my two daughters wanting to watch the live-action Fairly Odd-Parents mini-movie on Thursday, and taking my youngest to see Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 on Friday. Both were rather funny, although the former was pretty corny.  Latter was very well done.

In case anyone still, or ever, reads my posts, I did want to clarify my style of "reviewing". I try to avoid going over the top with my opinion. I'm not going to say that anyone should not see a film, because I know there's a consumer for everything out there. (One thing I learned from Japanese and German porn.) I also try to avoid spoiling, sometimes to a fault, although I will use the spoiler tag if something needs to be said (written, typed?). That is all.

here's me haul from the past couple of days:

Hell Baby (2013) Newest Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon feature starring Rob Corddry, Keegan Michael-Key, and a ton of people you will recognize from either The State, Reno 911, Parks and Rec., etc... Expecting couple moves into a haunted house and the wife gets posessed. Keegan Michael-Key nearly steals this one. If you're tuned into the humor of Garant and Lennon, this movie is for you. But, if you lack a soul, you'll probably find this movie predictable. 7/10

The Bell Witch Haunting (2013) I live in Tennessee, so I'm very familiar with the Bell Witch legend. My great grandparents rented property from descendants of John Bell. So I was very interested in seeing this when I first found out it existed. Too bad no one else involved in the production of this film has done more than a ask Jeeves search of the Bell Witch. This is a found footage movie. That's a genre that is tough to master, but when done correctly can be very entertaining. (e.g. The Blair Witch Project or Paranormal Activity films.) I was MST3King this movie 5 minutes into the start. (Quick note: I dislike when people talk during a movie, I feel you should pay attention to the dialog to try to glean as much information as possible in aiding your enjoyment and understanding during the film.) Lots of fun stuff to look for including a pool party with topless girls mid-January in Tennessee, palm trees (in Tennessee), 2 murders that are forgotten about or never mentioned, one of the worst cops in film history,  wooden acting, horrible dialog, bad continuity, and unintelligible audio at times. 3/10 for color, boobs, and boobs.

This Is the End (2013) I loved this one. Not sure whether Danny McBride, Emma Watson, or Michael Cera had the best role. The title says it all. The only thing I didn't care for was the musical number. (Not really my kind of tune.) 8/10

OK, I have a confession to make. I've watched That's my Boy and I've actually kind of liked it.

This was much better than Sandler's other recent output (not that I've watched any of those movies).

Sure, the humor is as crude as in his other movies, but this time I've actually laughed several times.

The use of Vanilla Ice was definitely the best use of an 80s celebrity, since Sam Jones in Ted.

Okay the list at IMDB backs this up...but there has to be some loophole...I mean, that means he's showing up to a different shoot on a different production at a rate of almost one a week for two years.

That shouldn't be possible.  If it's true, he deserves some kind of publicity for this.  It's like he's part of some crazy bet.

Eric Roberts appared in Sharktopus solely because the producer offered him the chance to fly himself, his family and friends out, for a month long vacation in Mexico at a luxury resort while they shot the movie. So, yeah, not really any standards.

Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 is a perfectly acceptable afternoon out with the kids.

The whole concept of the machine turning the island into the bastard love child of Jurassic Park & The Food Channel was pretty ingenious.

Irreversible - Holy cow, this was awful. That's 3-1/2 hours of my life I'll never get back. What do you mean, it's only 97 minutes long? It sure felt like 3-1/2 hours! This is a movie that's in love with itself, trying to be all artistic and stuff. This is a movie with the thinnest of plots - a rape and revenge - and uses the gimmick, a la Memento , of playing out in reverse chronological order. The gimmick is useless and serves no purpose. Many of the scenes are painfully overlong. The infamous rape scene is incredibly well done, brutal, violent, really realistic and nasty. The revenge scene is really violent but lost in a mess of "artistic" nonsense. You do get about ten minutes of incredibly gorgeous Monica Bellucci naked to end the movie but even that isn't enough to save this dog. 1/10 - one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Blue Jasmine: Blanchett is tremendous and it's a great character study of this woman who's pretty much gone off the deep end. It's actually a pretty horrifying film, especially when you realize just how batshit insane she is. It has a lot to say about mental illness and what happens when you can't weather the storm and get through the tough times. Problem is, you keep getting hints of how out of touch Allen really is. One plot point is that Jasmine doesn't have a clue about computers, but she somehow manages to get a job as receptionist. Because, you know, receptionists don't use computers.

Also, Allen's class ideas basically boil down to rich people = lazy and selfish, poor people = stupid and crass, which gets annoying after a while. Not to mention the part where the sister's apartment is, by any standards, actually a pretty nice, spacey place to live (and easily more than she could afford as a shop assistant) but everyone keeps commenting on what a dump it is. Allen spends a lot of the time bitching about the snobbishness of Jasmine here, but he demontrates his own snobbery here too many times to count. It's a good movie, but pretty clearly made by a guy who's still living in the 1980s.
