A cage is hanging above the ring.

The Smackdown opened with a recap of the main event at SummerSlam and the live crowd exploded with yes chants but booing when Randy Orton cashing was shown. They also recapped the events from Raw as well with the McMahons.

Vickie Guerrero opened the show to a shit load of heat and introduced Randy Orton. He spoke about giving us what we want. It was hard to hear he got a lot of heat. He said that he told us the truth about cashing in his briefcase at SummerSlam. He said he was surprised by what Triple H did, and that he didn't need his help to win. He asked for our support and No! chants broke out. He said he is the face of the WWE.

Daniel Byran interrupted Orton and thanked John Cena for the opportunity at SummerSlam. Bryan said it's time for the face of the WWE to change. Bryan insulted how Orton looks and said he looks pretty. He also called Orton arrogant. Bryan said he had to scratch and suffer while Orton was handed every opportunity.

Bryan challenged Orton for the title by saying I can beat you for that pointing to the title. He challenged Orton for the title tonight, but Orton said it has to wait until Night Of Champions. Orton and Bryan stood face to face and Orton held up the title. Bryan hit and kicked Orton from the ring.

Vickie was show talking and yelling about What Bryan did backstage, and Wade Barrett interrupted. A steel cage match was announced for later in the show

1. Intercontinental Champion Curtis Axel (w/Paul Heyman) beat Cody Rhodes. A pretty well wrestled match from both men, but there is a reason this match was on Smackdown. The crowd was pretty quiet for this match. The guy next to me caught me taking notes and told me to pay attention. WWE fans are crazy. A CM Punk chant broke out.

Heyman cut a promo afterward and received a ton of heat. He said he is in pain because of Punk. He moaned about Punk and trashed him, which caused a lot of heat. Heyman said Punk is lost without him. Axel said Punk doesn't deserve a title shot for his title, but he challenged him for the title for this coming Monday on Raw.

2. Dolph Ziggler beat Big E Langston (w/A.J. Lee). Ziggler won by pinfall after a Zig Zag.

3. World Hvt. Champion Alberto Del Rio defeated Christian. Del Rio defeated Christian via submission the arm bar. After the match, Del Rio said something about Latinos, which led to cheers, but he called all of us peasants and said that he wants us to follow the great Alberto Del Rio. Ricardo Rodriguiez came out and trashed Del Rio, and introduced Rob Van Dam. Christian dropkicked Del Rio off the top rope and RVD did a frog splash to end the segment.

4. Big Show and Mark Henry defeated Heath Slater, Drew McIntyre, and Jinder Mahal in a handicap match. Show and Henry won by pinfall after Show hit the WMD.

5. Darren Young defeated Antonio Cesaro.

6. Daniel Bryan defeated Wade Barrett in a cage match. A really good, competitive match with several near falls. And because of Bryan's involvement, this match would have been an awesome pay-per-view match. Afterward, Orton came out and RKO'd Bryan. The crowd booed to end the show.

Dark Match

1. Big Show, Mark Henry, and Daniel Bryan defeated The Shield. Big Show gave Stinkfaces to all three members of The Shield and the crowd laughed.

I enjoy the recapper getting yelled at by someone for taking notes.

I am positive the person who yelled at him posts on this board.

JUST SIT BACK AND TURN OFF YOUR BRAIN!!! YOUR PENCIL SCRATCHES ARE RUINING EVERYTHING!!!

I'm totally fine with Darren Young (and the PTPs) getting a push. Yes, it's because he became out and he's now a really public figure. But the WWE is a corporation. They push dudes based on how much they're willing to shill. Sometimes they're really talented like Cena or Seamus. Other times, it's The Miz. Darren became a face of the company by making a really brave statement -- he threw himself into a potential firestorm knowing how many trogladytes are in the crowd in an industry that has always cast perceived homosexuals as villains as opposed to raising his hand to attend some public appearance to enhance corporate branding. If he's good enough, who cares? He hasn't gotten that chance, though.I know people get butthurt when Cesaro loses. And he's one of my favorites -- he's been remarkably great all year and has an argument as the best WWE wrestler in 2013, a year that has been off-the-charts in-ring. But part of being great is to also get other people over. Darren's done that his whole tenure. I'm glad someone as talented as Cesaro gets to give him that shot. (Especially since Cesaro's going to get a bit push at some point.)

I actually don't mind Young beating Cesaro because I like Young and the PTP's and if they are going to put Cesaro in a tag team I'd rather him have some sort of feud/angle where the matches might get on tv more and it seems like they may be doing that with the PTP's and Real Americans.

Best Smackdown of the year?

Depends who was on the top rope.

Del Rio, amazingly, outbumped Christian. That no-hands faceplant bump to the outside was brutal. The flying armbar off the top was super swanky too.

JBL was great during the handicap tag. "Get the number of that bus!", "the day the music died", "count to 100".

What happened to bust Darren's mouth, a stiff European? I missed half the match.

Did I just catch someone with a CM Punk "Black Flag bars" white t-shirt in the crowd before Barrett came out? Fun cage match. Barrett eating those kicks on the apron and then taking the toprope powerbomb puts him in my cool book this week for sure. The running knee was less death-intensive than the Summerslam one (way more Mutoh) but it still looked great.

I'm not saying it was the best tv show of the year or even close to it, but that might have been my favorite show all year.  Yes there were matches I wish had gotten more time BUT....

- Really liked the opening segment and often don't like WWE opening segments

- I don't even like Cody and I'm middle of the road on McGuillicutty but aside from the weak finisher I thought it was a decent match.

- Dolph should only be allowed to work sprints against Big E at this point.  Guy is a great base and dude for Dolph to fly off of, his big spots look really impressive and he will take a crazy bump himself.

- Actually this was the show of psychotic bumps as Del Rio almost died five seconds into the Christian match and then Christian took his lump later.  They had another really good match.  Not at the level of the ppv, but a very good tv match.  Ricardo with RVD is so stupid that it makes me laugh so there is that too.

- Show/Henry I really like as a team.  I don't really like Henry being all smiley, but on scale I want to see them crush dudes and watching them crush 3MB was fun.  Slater brought his version of the crazy bump here.

- Cesaro v. Darren Young was damn fun for the three or four minutes it got.  I wish they would make better use of Cesaro's talents, but I have hope they are building a real angle with these teams and wouldnt' be shocked to see them get the youtube match for the next ppv which would be great.

- Another great Ryback bully segment.

- Barrett/Bryan in the Cage was good.  Not great, but good.  Glad Bryan is keeping the running knee KO finish and that powerbomb was another nutty spot.

I just thought the show was a good use of a broad cross section of talent.  I really do love Sheamus and Cena, but I think in some ways them being gone is going to open up for a lot of fun top to bottom shows like this

As soon as Daniel Bryan used that running knee on John Cena at SummerSlam, I wanted it to become Bryan's pinfall finisher to go with the Yes Lock as the submission finisher. Glad it is. What a way for it to debut at SummerSlam, taking John Cena out for a clean three.

Mark Henry is the most appropriate human being to bring the Pounce back.

YES. It looked like Erick Rowan did the POUUUUNCCCEEE on Brodus Clay a few weeks back (and legit knocked him a bit loopy). Someone needs to be doing it though, especially for when guys like Zayn and Neville get called up. Big E would also be a good choice, though he has the Vader chest block thing down great.
