Tabe
As much as I like Rashida Jones when I saw that she was a producer on Hot Girls Wanted, I knew it would be extremely anti-sex worker. Everything I've read about the film makes it seem so. I'm not sure that's the spin I'd put on it. I'd say it's more anti-sex industry and it seeks to de-glamorize what the workers get into. It's a bit of cold water on the "they're famous and making lots of money" idea some people seem to have. The film doesn't bash the workers. That said, it's not particularly good. nate
Watched Fed Up last night. Spoiler for length; tl;dr takeaway is: it's well done, you should check it out. It allegedly played a part in Kevin Smith going from a fat fucking prick to a less fat fucking prick. Don't hold the Kevin Smith endorsement against it; it's still an impressive doc to watch. I watched Fed Up. I have worries about my kid, because she's fairly young but is proportionate to a child developmentally 3-5 yrs older than her (both in height & weight, which the doctors have said for years, "As long as proportions remain equal, she's ok," except recently when the same doctor said, "Wow, this is becoming a problem," at which point I openly told him that I felt right then like punching him in his goddamned mouth). When this started becoming obvious (to me) at 3-4yo, I would joke that she had the "Andre the Giant syndrome" (not to make fun of her, but to deflect real worries I guess). Now, her body issues have become a concern. This documentary didn't really do anything to set my mind at ease, either. It was like saying, "You're fucked, and the system that is supposed to look out for you is corrupt so you're still fucked. And if you try to rebel against it, you'll be fucked there too. Enjoy your fatass kids America!" Everything I heard them saying that was fundamentally incorrect is shit the pediatrician has said, even to the point of recommending I take her to a nutritionist who - like that which happened to a girl in the film - told me she doesn't take kids as young as mine. We do the "eat less, exercise more" plans, I have labored over calorie charts, I've tried to cut out certain things, only to add them back when "research" shows that they're actually okay, and I've even had her dabbling with fad diets (only marginally, as we only really tried the food pyramid diet until discovering that wasn't working). And I don't know how much more the child can exercise. The internet, esp. sites you'd think would help, like the Mayo Clinic and Women's Health (for her), even Men's Health occasionally, plus Parents Magazine online and so on, that shit's no help either. And a cold search for "healthy diets for children" gives up shit that sounds good on one site, horrible the next. The only thing left is a full, near-total rejection of all sugar & an increase in fiber (like she doesn't shit like a beast enough, so can't wait for that~!). But I'm worried, like watching the one girl who said her doctor said she was becoming a "statistic." I don't want my kid being a diabetic before she's in double digits, or having kids laugh because she jiggles when she runs. I'm a dad that would cut a bitch over my kid, but this one thing's wearing me out. Anyway, it was a good doc. A bit heady on just the sheer amount of info you're given. I wrote more than I prob meant to, but I don't think I want to delete it, since it's a big part of what documentaries are supposed to do. Think I'll spoiler tag it for length. If you read this far, I appreciate it b/c my personal shit is kinda boring. But go watch Fed Up.

Johnny Sorrow
So I saw " Call Me Lucky" and it's god damned amazing. I'm a comedy dork, so I've been a fan of Barry Crimmins since 1989, and I heard him on the WTF? show that inspired this. So I knew where it was going. But it was still fucking amazing, and it's a must see.

And I'm gonna watch it at the Art or on DVD and cry my fucking eyes out. The guy sounds like the Bill Hicks I never knew, and the backstory and eventual revelation is so so strong (EDIT: FUCKING HORRIBLE). This should be the movie to make people wake up about Bobcat being a great filmmaker, and the topic it eventually results in.

Johnny Sorrow
I just saw "Drunk, Stoned, Brilliant, Dead: The Story Of The National Lampoon". It's fucking amazing. And it's funny as hell. All the shots of the articles from the glory years of the book had me laughing my ass off.
Reed
Captivated: The Trials of Pamela Smart. It doesn't really prove her innocence (although the case against her wasn't exactly the slam dunk people think) but it makes a good point of saying how the sensation and the movies and the fuss around the case meant she never got a fair trial. The life without parole sentence seems a bit harsh in retrospect too, especially when the kids involved are either free or up for parole soon. Guilty or not, I don't really see the point in keeping her in jail til she's 95. Also: she doesn't look anything like Nicole Kidman.
Cliff Hanger
ELECTRIC BOOGALOO: THE WILD, UNTOLD STORY OF CANNON FILMS finally hit DVD and VOD in the past six weeks since I checked last. I absolutely fucking loved Cannon movies in the 80s (even MotU, even Over the Top...) so I've been wanting to get hold of this for a while. If I run out of SW Rebels before I run out of 3-day weekend I'll be taking a look at it, if not there's always next weekend.

Cliff Hanger
Watched it tonight. It's great fun, but not a super deep dive. They get interviews with basically all the important Cannon utility players except Norris. I legit burst out laughing at Albert Pyun (director of CYBORG, NEMESIS and the 1991 CAPTAIN AMERICA) saying he'd never had a positive test-screening. They never even touch ROBOTECH: THE UNTOLD STORY or the disastrous attempt to make a Spider-Man movie. I feel like there's an amazing oral history yet to be made, but this is still really enjoyable. sydneybrown
I watched it last night and I thought it was excellent. Two hours that absolutely fly by. So many great anecdotes and stories. That being said, I feel like an idiot not realizing the Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 poster was a parody of The Breakfast Club.
