  1. Whats out there for the footage that Larry Matysik put out there himself is 81-83 Wrestling at the Chase that was taped in the studio. The Flair/Brody Broadway and the precious little other "arena" footage from that era primarily exists from All Japan sending production crews during that time period to record matches whenever Giant Baba came over for a US tour or other American stars they were pushing like Brody had major matches, which is how we have that Broadway. Sadly not much else from those loaded arena shows proper exists beyond that on tape. I just took a look at the date for the Flair/Brody poster that was noted earlier in the thread. That show itself was actually from after Sam Muchnick retired in 82, but the cards were still loaded for a while after that. The drop off really doesn't seem to hit until second half of 83 when Matysik splits off from what the new ownership group (which I believe was a consortium of Verne Gagne, Harley Race and Bob Geigel) Matysik then tries to run his own shows (taking Brody with him) in STL for the second half of 1983, but ultimately ends up brokering the deal for the WWF to take the classic Wrestling At The Chase time slot with market-specific tapings initially at the Chase Hotel itself, which ends up being the first real "shot fired" for Vince storming into a vital NWA market, and those tapings being the debut date for Hulk Hogan, who himself had been on quite a few of the St. Louis group's cards in 83. Even into 84 and 85 there are still some loaded shows with the remaining group, with the NWA World Championship still being defended regularly, and stars from the AWA, World Class, and other remaining territories popping in with a little more Central States support, but ultimately the oversaturation of the core St. Louis group running every three weeks and the WWF running their own shows aggressively every few weeks in the early going led to the final "true" St. Louis shows as 85 transitioned into 86, and ultimately Jim Crockett came in to run his own shows as the last alternative option to the WWF for St. Louis wrestling fans.

  2. Last night was a roll coaster of emotions. Mostly of frustration. On the bright side, the weather was pleasant, the fans were great (met some fellow Canadians who made the trip down) and I had a blast with my bro in law and nephew (the tickets were their birthday presents). Unfortunately, we aren't a playoff team. Especially after laying a couple eggs against a couple of 2-10 teams. And with all the frustration felt throughout the game, their was a glimmer of hope at the end. I have a feeling, Kenny would've won last night if the game played out the same up to the 4th quarter. But all in all, I had a good time, which would've been a great time if we got the W.

  5. It’s funny how many places just called their promotions or TV shows very generic things like “all star wrestling” or “championship wrestling” or “big time wrestling.”

  6. We are WORLDS apart on Shida (big fan of hers) but I popped you a like because I was just about to make the same Rey Jr comparison with Riho in terms of the underdog intangibles, you're right on the money there IMO Quick edit: @GuerrillaMonsoonmakes an excellent point too about Riho's matches with Nyla: it's such a great visual when she's in there with a much bigger woman like her, or Stat or someone. It's almost one of those things where, you could show that to someone who's never seen wrestling in their lives, and just purely visually they could grasp the David v Goliath story

  7. St. Louis was also pretty much a one-city promotion and not a full loop territory on its own (similar to Paul Boesch with Houston Wrestling and the Tunneys with Toronto/Maple Leaf Wrestling), undercards might be filled out with some folks homesteading in the adjacent Central States territory but the upper half of the cards were almost always the wrestling version of "all-star games" with national stars every 2-3 weeks, and then taping the next few weeks of Wrestling At The Chase TV the following morning I believe. And man, if you want some other variants of "all-star game" booking, take a look at Honolulu results from 1971-1974. While there seemed to be a regular affiliation with the AWA, more often than not any American star that was on his way to and/or from Japan would also be on the bill, multiple shows where the upper half of the card features championships from all over the country being defended, such as one from 1973 where Pedro Morales defends the WWWF Heavyweight Championship and Nick Bockwinkel/Ray Stevens defend the AWA World Tag Team Championship, with Verne Gagne popping in quite a bit to defend the AWA World Championship AND Dory Funk Jr. also popping in on occasion to defend the NWA World Championship.

  9. When Sempervive and I were talking about doing a pod about mid 1980s DMV wrestling TV, I ran into that problem where all the wrestling shows are just labeled as wrestling. Luckily, we have which shows were on when memorized from being kids with sponge brains.

  12. That was pretty close to my Platonic ideal of an hour of AEW television. Thanks for throwing me a bone, AEW! It's been a while since I felt like you booked a show specifically for me and nerds like me. A Dragon main event is an ideal main event. A stiff nasty intense Dragon fight against a guy who can really go is a level above ideal. That was gorgeous. Exceeded my ridiculously high expectations. And we also got an Abadon match! And they were fighting someone with an indie/Japan background! One tiny niggle: usually I am pretty good at seeing the threads that connect two wrestlers. For example, Mercedes Martinez vs Willow Nightingale is Car vs Tree, which makes sense since sometimes cars hit trees. But Spooky Witch vs Undead Zombie? I am struggling to find any connection there. A speed/agility vs size/power match! Plus, toss in a Japanese guy! Right up my alley. And, yeah, I'm with Curt. That opening match was tremendously enjoyable. Is it possible Cassidy has grown into being the third-best seller among AEW's male wrestlers? Dragon and Mad King are in class of their own right now. Morton/Kikuchi/Yamazaki/Xavier Woods tier. But Orange was tremendous today. I LOVE how they are showing the attrition of the competitors in the C2. I think Orange paved the path there, in AEW, selling the cumulative damage of his many title defences. LOVED Daddy and Rick a Boney on commentary today! Was overjoyed that it was pretty much all wrestling and ZERO overwrought Sports Entertainment on today's show. And tonight, it's the annual year-end all-you-can-drink plus Chinese food party in Deep Osaka Namba with Cooger and about 40 of our friends! So, a pretty good day of wrestling for ole Gordlow here. An early Christmas present, if you weel.

  13. Wow did this one open on a smoker and close on one too. Angelico/Orange was a beautiful match. Facially I wish Angelico was more expressive but his moveset was a perfect match itself for Orange's style. They strung together a lot of intricate stuff with some great leg selling from Cassidy and elaborate, painful looking holds from Angelico. I probably haven't thought about this since Lucha Underground but Angelico reminds me of Vega from Street Fighter. Too bad Andrade already comes out in a mask that he takes off. Abadon looked good picking up another win (they say she's 19 out of 20 but you'd never know) though man do they scream a lot. Julia's heels are gonzo. I... didn't watch the tag match. Sorry guys. Nothing against it even though the oldsters were out, I just wasn't paying attention. But! Danny Garcia vs. Dick Danielson was such a treat. This version of Dragon is the best, always with that smug, cockeyed grin (the first time I ever saw a picture of the man he looked like that was in an ROH ad, only clean shaven, looking like the world's biggest -- or smallest -- high school jock asshole) and always with the open arms. Garcia looked like this was the match he'd been waiting his whole life for and he wrestled like it too. Fantastic selling and total stiffness from both guys, no light at all. Incredibly smart counter-wrestling. Reversals in fortune abounded. I was reminded why I wanted Garcia in the BCC so bad when it jumped off. Beyond anything else you wanted Danny to win so, so bad... and that prick with the eyepatch stole it away, again.

  14. Forget the year of the listing and what city it was, but I saw a TV Guide listing from back in the day on FB that showed upcoming airings of "Wrestling" and "Rasslin'". Curious where the latter was based.

  15. When I was young all wrestling whether in English (WWWF, Florida) or Spanish (LA, Ringside 41) was on the Spanish language stations. The TV listings for all of them was Lucha Libre.

  17. When someone (a board search shows @Zakk_Sabbath) posed the hypothetical way back in January what you would name your promotion, my assertion is that you already have had every possible combo of "World", "(E)xtreme", "Global", "US/A", "International", "Universal", "Federation", and "Championship Wrestling" you can think of. I believe Cobra Commander posted the old TV Guide listings for pro wrestling. The generic "Wrestling" always gets me. Then I remember, back when the TV Guide channel was still around, the generic "Boxing" for some regional boxing program Lou DiBella is doing out of Foxwoods and in and around the five NYC boroughs or CES Boxing out of Rhode Island and various other parts of New England is pretty much the exact same thing. And guess what? That's what best describes the content that was put out and don't expect any more than that.

  18. I was talking to one of my friends about how I think His Flacco is the best quarterback the Browns have played this season. It isn't that Flacco is good, it's just he's the only one who has played in a way that made me think, "that's above the baseline for an NFL quarterback." Everyone else looked like every capable quarterback was kidnapped by terrorists and these were the guys who were left over. So if a Steelers fan thinks, "at least Kenny doesn't look like he is a replacement from when terrorists stole all the quarterbacks," I understand.

  25. Fuck, that's disrespectful. Like Niko said, you may want to see if there's someone you can contact at the cemetery. They may want to get police involved if there was any other damage. Unfortunately, vandalism at cemetery's is far too common from what I've seen. In my news days, I did quite a few stories on incidents around here. Some were stuff like tire tracks or knocked-over tombstones, but it also went all the way to racist graffiti. It's sad, and I'm especially sorry it happened to you @The Natural. I hope that, even if they can't find who did it, they can get it cleaned up.

  28. Well this was as good an episode of Dynamite as I can remember in quite a while, I enjoyed everything except for fuck face McGhee yelling about the devil. I'd like to see MOX and ROOOSH in a Mexican Death Match where Pepe Aguilar plays like Natural Born Killas in ECW. Speaking of those two imagine a block of Bob Holly, Greg Valentine, Mox, El Toro Blanco and GUNTHER! Now that would be hard hitting action!

  35. Awesome Athena/Billie brawl to open this week after Billie squashed Dani Mo. Feels like setting up an epic Billie victory, but I do hope it doesn't come off lesser being in Athena's hometown at Final Battle. Also epic that they are officially the main event! Also awesome, Blackpool Combat Club vs. FTR & Mark Briscoe at Final Battle! I love using Johnny TV & Taya on Honor, potentially great addition for two rarely used talents. Solid match with Johnny and Dalton, made me think Johnny would've been a great pick for TV Champ or at least to put in the match for it. Their later backstage segment was hilarious, glad to see them continue a rivalry. Also dig the set up for a potential Taya/Kiera match. the Rachael/Leyla/Maria angle is amusing, almost thought Nikki Victory was gonna get a star making win for a moment. Good stuff from WorkHorsemen vs. The Infantry, 2 of my fav ROH regular teams. Nice women's tag. Sad to see the Renegades always on the losing end, but I was glad to see Adora getting a win again since she used to win more often. Both had their last wins on Honor back in July. Lee Johnson vs Josh Woods was great, absolutely shocked by the upset! Big Shotty looked excellent here. Tracy vs. Moriarty after was pretty good. Back to back wins for Butcher & Blade! Dug Daniels vs. Angelico and the post-match appearance of Orange & Danhausen. Ethan and Nese had a really good contract segment. Protein Powder to the Eyes!! Now an I Quit match at FB. Decent quick main from Kyle Fletcher and Gravity. One spot left in Survival of the Fittest for the TV title at FB.

  37. I really enjoyed Riho's matches with Nyla, and the occasional contribution to a trios match, but yeah, doesn't really do a lot for me. I wonder how much that street fight between Tay/Jay and Ruby/Willow where most of them got legit hurt shook confidence in the division. That was the last real high profile match in the division as far as I can recall. Everything else has been largely.....2005 WWE womens division level promotion since.
