with the weather going on in the midwest this weekend, I thought for a moment that Hook Echo would make for a good finisher name, then I realized that it probably couldn't beat the best Tornado reference finisher name, the F5.

I never needed a license to ring announce in Ohio or Pennsylvania, but when I called my first MMA show in PA, the official asked me for a license. I thought he was kidding.

I've definitely told this story before, but Paul Roma came into my dad's bar like 5-10 years after last being on TV, and tried to big league him into drinks on the house so I've had a bad taste in my mouth ever since then

I was amused at Paul Roma wearing a T-shirt with the word “ROMA” on it for a WWF TV match in 1985. My first guess is that it was an unrelated business because I feel like I’ve seen that word in that typeface somewhere else but there’s a Roma Bakery in my area

Also Vince’s national expansion spared us from a world where Paul Roma leaves the WWF to go south and get the Mike Rotundo babyface push in Florida or JCP.

Instead he probably made more money doing WWF jobs for 7 years before finally going to WCW

Roma is pretty much the poster boy for "I should've been a superstar because I stuck needles in my ass." Like, you kinda need more of a personality than "Tom Zenk, but shorter" to make it in the business, guy...

being ugly Tom Zenk would be one way to get Tom Zenk in a feud where people would want to cheer for Tom Zenk

also, the time I confused Paul Roma for Ken Shamrock sure was a mistake

No, I get that.  Mullet-sporting Vince Torelli-era Shamrock looked remarkably like Roma.

Paul Roma's wrestling school has produced some really good wrestlers though. Richard Holliday is the biggest name so far, but the Miracle Generation (Kylon King and Dustin 'Flash' Waller) are one of the best young tag teams on the indies.

Lol that reminds me:

The city it's in almost shut Roma's school down a while ago!

He either made a mistake on the paperwork, or was trying to do some creative accounting, and so he registered it as an "adult entertainment" business. Which was fine - until they elected a new mayor, who immediately made it his mission to ban strip clubs and porno stores...

I think Roma ended up squashing it by running a charity show for free or something IIRC

I think any city with some history of Italian-American Immigrants has a Roma Bakery or two.

I mean you never know when you may be called on to be a replacement referee, judge, or even a fighter at the very last minute. I mean look at last week's UFC. I think Joe Martinez had to go to the toilet for a hot minute and someone had to step in.

If there's one thing I've learned from the announcers in this thread, it's that "always bring your license" is their version of "always bring your gear." Not joking, either - this is all super fascinating to me, the only stuff I knew a little bit about was the Kentucky stuff Nikita mentioned (but probably only because it was a hot button issue at the time with Ian)

Edit: It's kinda coming back to me now that it might have had something to do with that Mickie Knuckles incident but I gotta Google it, I may be crossing streams

Not 100% sure, but I believe the Knuckles stuff was after Ian had effectively been run out of Kentucky and was only running in Indiana.
