2016 Summer Blockbuster Movie Pool

Watched it - came away slightly disappointed.

Bourne doesnt say much. He emotes a fair bit. He looks at things. He just doesnt say much.

Action is good, but greengrass remembered he liked shakycam shots and quick cuts.

Vincent Cassel smoulders and is decent. TLJ visibly melted during the duration of the movie.

The whole Snowden meets Steve jobs sub-plot was "there" - not really expounded upon, but just there...

Good for a rental, not a patch on the original.

There was something off about the Bourne trailer.  I didn't want to admit because Damon was back.  It felt oddly dull and seem to just check-mark off all of Bourne's tropes like a list.  The trailer was a letdown considering this was suppose to be big Damon's return.

I am not getting excited about my upward swing since Ice Age is just going to kill it.

I haven't seen a lot of talk about Ghostbusters being a commercial flop (I don't mean here, but anywhere). Are people afraid to say it in case people accuse them of being sexist? I mean it clearly didn't make near enough, globally it hasn't even met its production budget. I saw it a few days ago and it was actually better than I was expecting, surprised it didn't do better then it did between old school Ghostbuster fans and those that wanted to see a movie with female protagonists.

I think, as often happens on the Internet, both sides of that argument were so entrenched in their positions that no one was really going to be happy unless it was a smash hit or a complete bomb.  Instead, it got pretty good reviews, was #2 at the box office on its opening weekend, will lose money, but there are certainly several other movies this summer that flopped much harder.  Neither side can be like "Told you so" without being disingenuous, and (not to discourage discussion on the topic) everyone else that didn't care enough to pick a side is probably just as happy to be done with hearing about it.

I thought the film was way better than the trailers, but after watching it, I can see why it really didn't do that well. The cast was riffing off each other and in between that you had the stuff with the ghosts. If you take away the obligatory cameos and the name, it's basically four women and Thor do a long skit with some CGI thrown in. I wasn't very invested in the plot. It was a fine comedy movie, but at no point did you feel like this is a license to print money.

To elaborate on what people are posting:

If I climb all the way up just to finish in 7th I am gonna be sad

Rippa hasn't dropped in the standings since update #4, which was on June 3rd.  He's gone 22nd, 21st, 20th, 17, 13, 12, 10, 10 and now 9th place.

Well, I ain't budging off #6 for you, that's for damn sure.

EVA has been stuck at #6 (which is not a bad place to be) for the last three updates.

Holy crap, how did I go up four spots?  I figured I'd be in the cellar by now.

So the new movies in this update were the new Star Trek and Ice Age.  You left Star Trek off your box office list, left Ice Age off your RT list, and placed Star Trek well enough on your RT list (pretty high) that you barely got any extra points from it.  That means you picked up fewer points this week than most people.

I guess the lesson that DC learned from BvS was "We can make a ton of money even with bad reviews."  It's now at 34% with 44 reviews.  So if it stays in that range, it'll be right around the level of Now You See Me 2,13th or 14th on the RT rankings for the 20-movie field.

Of the 23 participants, 13 of us put Suicide Squad in the top half of our RT list, between 3rd and 7th.  Then The Z and Lacelle had it at 8th, Control had it at 9th, and EVA was the outlier, putting it at 14th.  The remaining six people left it off their RT list altogether.

I put it as fifth.

Those three weeks I was in first sure were nice.

RIP my chances.

Yeah. I've developed gallows humour with Jason Bourne and Suicide Squad of all things screwing me.
