The double turn would have made sense, given how en vogue it was at the time, how popular the NWO was, and hindsight showing that most of the key players end up turning within 12 months after any way.

 

Keep the slightly screwy finish, have Sting win, but then go "too far" in taking out his frustrations on Hogan post-match, putting him out, before Bret puts a halt to it.

 

The dynamic of whose side is Bret on is probably better with a face NWO, and a WCW who may not be perfect, but to begin with at least, had their hand forced by the actions of the NWO over the past few years, which ends up being a slow build toward Sting vs. Bret at Starrcade the next year.

 

That's actually a great idea, with the only caveat being how well Sting works heel.  That's the big question mark for me with the scenario of turning Sting instead of Hogan to lead the nWo.  Sting is/was one of my favorite babyfaces, but I've never seen him do great heel work.  His early runs as a heel (in the UWF/Bladerunners, pre-JCP) was average, at best.  He seemed sort of reluctant to throw himself into the heel role with the Main Event Mafia (I remember too many segments where the rest of the MEM heeled it up and Sting sort of stood off to the side and.... didn't work babyface).  From some stuff said about him over the years, I got the impression he didn't really want to work babyface (much like Bret).

 

The nWo worked as well as it did not because Hogan turned for the first time in many years, but because he threw himself into the role and ran with it,  No way to know, of course, but I'm not sure Sting would have done that.

I don't quite understand why wrestling fans are stereotyped as the creepiest and most pathetic people in the world. Yes, I have been to some indy events and met all kinds of dudes that I thought were a little strange but I've also been to a hundred WWE events where I see families and I guess what would be categorized as "normal looking" people as well. Wrestling attracts all kinds just like any form of entertainment.

 

Ever been to an NFL game? I honestly cannot tell the difference between some of the people there and people you would see at a wrestling event. The one thing I never read about is someone being stabbed in the parking lot after leaving a WWE show..

 

Some people still can't get over the idea that if you like wrestling you're getting "duped" somehow.  It's like some guys are still so proud of knowing that it's worked, and they can't have a more nuanced take on anything than "real and fake."

 

So, it's become a convenient thing to look down on.  If you like it, there's something gullibe (read: childish) about you.  It's similar to people who look down on people who watch anime (cartoons????) or comic books (like, for kids??????).

 

But, if Corporate Content Corp. makes one into a "real movie" now it's super fucking badass!!!!! IRON MAN WHOOOOOOOOO!

 

As if any wrestling company ever has worked an entire city like Loria worked Miami or Georgia Frontier worked St. Louis or Las Vegas Coporate Casino Inc. worked every sad dying town that decided a casino would bring more money into their economy instead of just siphoning what's left of their money into some Camen Islands umbrella company...or...(you can all probably extend this list to the end of time for "legit' sports)...But, hey...at least they're not like tricking you with childish tricks and blood capsules and stuff!

 

It's like the big grifters love you to be savvy to the small ones...that way you think you're real smart, doncha!

 

 

Yeah.  I went to San Diego in '98 to watch the WCW BATB PPV with Rodman and Karl Malone, and there was some asshat sports writer in the local paper whose take on wrestling fans went something like this:

 

If only you wrestling fans were as smart as I am, then you'd know that it's fake and then you wouldn't like it anymore.

 

But occasionally I read things that some wrestling fans post online and I think maybe he almost had a point.  I dunno.

I think the creepy police thing is due to the fact that we have all met wrestling fans in real life that are basically the creepiest most awful dudes. On a message board, where everyone is inherently anonymous, we naturally assume that a poster is a creeper even if what they said would be borderline normal had the conversation been face to face.

You should see my Facebook posts ... I creep the creep out my own creepin' self ...

Only if you sacrifice yourself on a cross of unprotected chair shots and elbows to the cold, unforgiving cement floor. That seemingly puts you above reproach.
What exactly is wrong with communicating with a porn star? You do realize they're people too, right? The way I see it, this is less about Foley's issues and a whole lot more about yours.
I find it strange that a full grown man is writing fan mail to a porn star. To answer Jae's question seriously, yes I'd find a full grown man sending fan mail to Anna Kendrick strange too. I get admiring someone's work, I get being a fan. I'm a fan of a lot of people (Foley would probably top my favorite wrestler list if that matters), but I wouldn't write them fan mail. I wouldn't ask the biggest celebrity in the world for an autograph if I saw him/her on the street either. Nor would I approach them, try to strike up a conversation, or give them a hearty thumbs up. So in that way it certainly is my issue.
In my secret other life, I'm a writer and musician, and I can tell you fan mail is one of the best parts of the "job" (scare quotes because I don't make a living at either.) It's much more meaningful than "you sold x copies of your book in the last three months."I wish more people sent fan mail to people whose work they enjoyed, whether it be music, literature, or pornography.
I work in the state mental health sector irl ... I've gotten "fan mail" before ... not entirely awesome ...

I remember the days when we would sit and admire pro wrestling.

 

I'm new here but I like to admire pro wrestling! I'm currently watching The Road Warriors slaughter the Midnight Express to win the NWA tag-titles. Now that was a good piece of pro wrestling.

I just got a text saying Cousin Luke has passed away.

 

 

 

Gene Lewis/Cousin Luke passes away

 

Gene Pettit, who wrestled the early part of his career as Gene Lewis and the latter part as Cousin Luke, passed away today.

No other details are available.  He was in his early 60s, as he was a teammate in college football of Paul Orndorff.

 

While living in Tampa, he was a training partner outside the ring of the late Dale Lewis, one of the best U.S. amateur heavyweights of his era who was a star in Florida at the time.

 

As Gene Lewis, he was a journeyman wrestler whose main claim to fame is that his "brother" was a wrestling star.  He had good size but didn't break out of the pack.  He did other gimmicks, such as being The Mongol of Devastation Inc. in World Class Championship Wrestling, and Molokai as part of Kevin Sullivan's group in Florida in the early 80s.

 

He came to WWF in 1985 as Hillbilly Cousin Luke, the cousin of already established Hillbilly Jim.  Luke essentially took over for Lanny Kean who was Cousin Junior, but didn't last long with the promotion due to a broken ankle.

 

He worked the rest of his career, mostly in Northeast indies, as Cousin Luke.

 

He had battled serious health problems for the past decade, including back problems, diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

Perfunctory "please pardon my mega time lagged posting habits" WJ press release.

 

Drake Younger is proof that some guys that do that style can work well outside the environment.  His move to the west coast, cutting out the deathmatches and hooking up with PWG is probably the best thing that could have happened to him.

 

Only Drake match in PWG that I saw is the one vs. Sami Calihan at "a BOLA" (that's the extent of my PWG knowledge (me and a friend basically just watched the show to count superkicks and be smug dicks)) and rather than a million light tubes, they just used a million big moves. If you're fucking powerbombed outside the ring three times, that should be it. I don't give a fuck.

 

I don't give a fuck about garbage overkill and I don't give a fuck about MOVEZ overkill. Same bullshit principle. Same "gotta keep doing more and more" slippery slope bullshit.

Sting should have gone over clean as a fucking whistle at Starrcade. It's insane that he didn't. Insane.

Blame Bret. Well, actually, no. Blame Bischoff for not putting Bret in a match, and instead thinking he would get his shining moment by restarting the match.
