Been up since 1am, it's now 06:36am so cut me some slack if I'm forgetting someone but is this already one of the most surprising/controversial comic book castings ever? I can honestly say hand on heart I was in the minority thrilled with Heath Ledger's casting as The Joker. I know there was a backlash to Michael Keaton as Batman and he proved the cynics wrong.

Kingsley as The Mandarin before the joke reveal was awesome, Tony Leung as the actual Mandarin was awesome. This could be the exact same scenario.

Stark as Doom/Doom as Stark is also the plot of a What If comic from like a decade ago. I mean it was basically Superior Spider-Man before that was a thing, but still.

Why not just do Doctor Doom?

Well to be fair, Variety and the directors themselves did say RDJ is playing Victor. Everything about Stark variants is just internet panic.

Yep, I hate it.

Serious question: what’s to hate about it?  I don’t really get why.people are objecting (instead of just being disinterested).

i’m not much of a comic book movie fan, so maybe I’m just missing something, but I’m intrigued.  I can’t think of much else they could do to get me interested in an Avengers movie.  I am somewhat nervous that it’ll be Tony Stark form another timeline or that they’ll speed to a babyface turn by the second movie just because ir’s RDJ.  That sounds less interesting to me. I want Victor Von Doom punting babies & ripping out spines from start to finish. Dr. Doom is not a hero.

That said, Brian Bendis’ Infamous Iron Man comic - which starred Doom - was rather good.  Fortunately, Doom’s redemption arc was pretty much forgotten after the series ended.

On a certain level, it’s not any better than race/gender swapping a character. At least in the latter, it’s an attempt to diversify the characters after decades of under representation. But all of them are thumbing their nose as the characters as presented, the ones people know and/or like.

Julian McMahon might still be the best casting of Doom in live action and even that wasn’t great.  At least he presumably wouldn’t be a slacker hacker like that awful awful film.

They picked the wrong Oscar winner from Oppenheimer. Cillian Murphy would have been a great Doom. I’m sure RDJ will make it work but this is an interesting choice for sure.

Not sold on RDJ as Doctor Doom. Never once considered that. I was wanting Mads back.

Him, Cillian Murphy or Michael Fassbender.

Okay, but if he's not some sort of Stark variant, then what - Victor Von Doom just happens to look exactly like Tony Stark? That would be even dumber, wouldn't it?

If they're doing justice to Doom, it shouldn't matter who's face is under the mask, because Doom shouldn't take the mask off ever.

If RDJ is playing Doom as some variant multiverse version of Tony then they are doing a disservice to Doom and the FF

I mean, Robert Downey Jr. is nearly 60. Clean-shaven, he doesn’t look a lot like the Tony Stark of Marvel movies. It took me a bit to even recognize him when he took off the Doom mask last night.  Tell him to stop dying his hair black and have him appear clean-shaven & it will be fine.  Also, if they stick somewhat closely to Doom’s comic portrayal, he’s going to wear a mask most of the time and be horribly disfigured under the mask.

People were talking about Avengers: Doomsday at Panera’s this morning when we stoped after church. From the snippets of conversation, I think it’s safe to assume they’re not comic book fans or hardcore MCU viewers.  Heck, I’m not much of a fan and I am intrigued.  Hopefully, I make it to the credits.  My wife and friends have a higher tolerance for comic book movies than I do, so I’ve spent many a Marvel or DC movie walking the mall or playing old video games in the theatre lobby while I wait for them.

If this is Doom from Fantastic Four’s universe, then it’s no different from the Human Torch and Captain America from different universes looking alike.

Unless they had Johnny from that version of the Fantastic Four interacting with characters from the MCU (and maybe they did; I'm still years behind on my MCU watching) then it seems pretty different to me.
