  1. I can understand if no one under 35 wants to wants to watch Dark/Elevation, because I think it's for people who grew up with Wrestling Challenge and Worldwide and mid-late 90s WCW Saturday Night and Velocity. That's the tricky thing with a lot of the discourse right now. A lot of what AEW produces is for me in a lot of ways. A big chunk of it is not, and it's kind of funny because it feels like some people want more of the things I don't want and less of the things I do want. But I think we're all in agreement that they can make everything feel more important (probably by letting certain things sink in somewhat more), not be so beholden to certain formats, and book a few more weeks out in the build on some of the things in the undercard. We're all in disagreement on a lot of other things, though, which is both a good thing and a bad thing. The last year has really made it more of a "big tent" promotion, which again, has some pros and cons, and makes for a very tricky balance overall. If they improve a few straightforward things, they'd probably make enough people happier enough to smooth over quite a bit of the concerns.

  2. Let me play devil's advocate on something that is NOT a direct response to the arguments on this page but maybe adjacent or parallel or informed by them? One of my absolute favorite things about AEW in the last year (which is the entirety of the time I've been watching) are the Emi Sakura tags on Elevation. I loved watching how she interacted with her partners. I loved how they responded to her signature fun spots whether it's the tea bit or the We Will Rock you bit in the corner. They could get hard-hitting and heated. They never wore off their welcome. She was up against a variety of opponents with a variety of partners. Sometimes she had Mei or someone else seconding her. Emi will be very different teaming with Nyla or teaming with Maki or teaming with Diamante or teaming with Shafir, etc. She'll be different wrestling Ryo or Shida or Skye Blue or Anna Jay or Ruby Soho. Big energy, fun spots, funny at times, the crowd never really bored, in part because they're itching for wrestling and it's one of the first thing they see. If they put that match on Dynamite or Rampage next week, it'd crater the ratings for the segment. If they built it up for a month, maybe they'd have something but it'd come at an immediate cost when they're so focused on week to week and are nearing a contract renegotiation. Whereas, if they run them before the show, they can give some wrestlers some reps, let them learn a bit by wrestling Emi or with Emi, give the crowd something entertaining to end Elevation and get them ready for the main show, can get some eyes on the web shows in case they ever want to do anything with Emi (or Skye who benefited from this). Every little bit helps. It serves a purpose and is way less of a risk than messing with the formula. But as things are now, they can't just run it on a Dynamite without a cost. It's in investment when I think they're hesitant to invest. Sometimes, things do work. They ran the Trustbusters on Dark for a few weeks and then pushed them to Rampage (people complained). They ran 3 awesome, awesome weeks of Deeb and Martinez teaming before doing the Rampage match and the angle that followed to set up the PPV match (people complained that it was the first time they saw them and it came out of nowhere). If you list my top ten AEW things in the last twelve months, one would be Emi tags and one would be the Martinez/Deeb "Anything You Can Do" tags and feud. It's ok not to have time. I'm sure some people here would be more than happy to point out things that we think anyone should check out at the end of the year. That's part of what these communities have always been about, annotating and curating, list-making, comp-making. That said, and I've said it dozens of times now, AEW could solve some of these issues with just a few small changes. Make things matter. You're paying the people anyway. You're putting the matches on anyway. Draw connections overtly instead of covertly. Give people tools to understand what's going on and why things matter. There's already a lot there to be lifted up without any change to booking strategy. Low hanging-fruit which is more than some tweets and a sprawl at the bottom of the screen. And changing the booking strategy even 10% would probably help a ton anyway. EDIT: Also theoretically, I can retire with my full pension in ~17 years so be prepared to put me on block to avoid my massive sprawls of text within two decades?

  3. They heard about it in MARCH, talked with TK about it, and it was all good. Yet yesterday we got this headline: And all it implies. 98.3% of all online "journalism" can fuck right off. Because "FTR was moved from day 1 content to DLC 5+ months ago and everybody is cool with it" doesn't get clicks.

  4. There are times when they really do try to get away with it too, by having someone suddenly enter the top 5 or even get a title shot based on just a streak of matches on Dark/Elevation and then everyone ends up in arms over it. That's really on AEW for not making those wins (even over enhancement talent) seem important in the grand scheme of things. There are plenty of ways to frame it. Daniel Garcia beating Westin Blake on Dark should matter. Blake is a guy who's done stuff. You can make that matter. Parker Bordeaux beating someone in less than a minute should matter. Serene Deeb pulling someone up from the mat 3 times before beating them could be made to matter. "A string of definitive wins where she was in no danger," is the sort of qualitative thing that a company that cared could make matter. Mercedes Martinez had a string on dark where she put the title up against Viva Van, Hyan, Mazzerati, and Trish Adora. You can make that string matter. "She's taking on top local talent and giving them a shot." You could talk about how a team is trying out new moves or working so well in sync in these matches, how they're getting their act together, or how someone's shaking off losses on the bigger shows by getting back in the ring. Maybe people will buy it, maybe they won't. But the company has to at least try! Just putting on the matches isn't enough. It's wrestling. Sell it!

  5. Hard agree on this (and FWIW, I'm gonna be 35 in a few months). Some of the discussion surrounding Dark/Elevation/Rampage, not so much here because this board has always skewed older/smarter, but places like Twitter and reddit, is absolutely insane. Like, near-literally the ramblings of someone who has been institutionalized against their will. I cannot imagine the joy that would have been sucked out of my childhood if back then, we were all complaining that like, Randy Savage vs Bobby Eaton from Worldwide wasn't on Nitro, and it's not fair because they gave Chono airtime and he's not even signed, and why did Sonny Onoo open the stupid door to begin with, etc.

  6. Agreed, but in the screenshot above, it's a case where Twitter pushes you a tweet that someone you follow Liked. It's a good feature, like when you follow that hot guy who you had a good interaction with, but then suddenly find out he's liking "questioning the narrative" content, and pro-incel stuff, and anti-trans stuff, and it's like.... oh nooooooope. Anyway what were we talking about...

  7. Last week was bad with the depression and I've been crying non stop today. Today I did something I've never done, tell my Dad and Sister about the suicidal thoughts. I kept it from them for years as I didn't want to upset/worry. One of the hardest conversations I've ever had. Takes a lot to open up to someone and said someone hearing something deep like that. I've spoken to others before and didn't get the reaction I was hoping for which makes you reluctant to reveal something so personal. After letting my Dad/Sister know, it was a mixture wondering whether I should have because you can't turn back time and relief. If the roles were reversed I'd be upset someone I love was in such a state but by knowing, I'd be there for them. Mental health issues, depression and grief, your thoughts and feelings in mind. As ever, please keep this to the board only and not on Facebook. Only you here, my Dad, Sister, Adam and Alyson know about the self-harm/suicidal thoughts and I want to keep it that way. Thank you, Paul xxx.

  8. The other most exciting stuff in AEW recently was Konosuke Takeshita losing giant matches on TV with no build up. The main event from last Wednesday had no build up and was really great and got over with the rubes. I think folks are overthinking it or comparing it to WWE, which is pretty meticulous. AEW is insane. I dig that about it.

  9. Well, the best match in AEW history, Bryan Danielson vs Kenny Omega was just Danielson showing up to wrestling Kenny Omega.

  10. Daddy Magic is starting off hot! Dante Martin is doing a lot more matwork and less flashy highflying. Has he been hanging out with Angelico? I'm thinking that his crossbody isn't actually a highspot anymore. Fun midgrade finisher! Julia Hart. Evil. Cool submission. Daddy Magic ALSO appreciates a good tassel- as he mentions Arie Alexander's garb. Queen Aminata and Skye Blue are tagging together. We are getting closer and closer to Queen Aminata and Toni Storm to having a Totally Butt Based Match! Nyla beats on Skye and Skye COUNTERS out of a double team and tags in Queen Aminata who gets in a wad of offense, starting with a super stiff CHOP! Marina Shafir is fucking awesome going on offense and Queen Aminata rolls with her offense really well. Vickie Guerrero is a HEAT MACHINE~! That was good even if I couldn't quite figure out what they were doing for the finish. Matt Hardy wrestles in twelve thousandth match I've seen him wrestle. I remember him wrestling in a bar in Carolina back when you had to be at least 16 to smoke. It's Katie Arquette! I'm guessing that Serena Deeb won't give her much since she is doing a Speed Beatings Of Enhancement Talent thing. Arquette gets a moment of offense but not much. Frankie Kazarian wrestles and I recall that the last time I saw him wrestle was in Championship Wrestling from Hollywood against Jordan Clearwater two weeks ago. He looks good here. Okay, Rush teaming with the Butcher is something I didn't know I needed until right now. Rush takes on the enhancement talent like Vader channelling the Nasty Boys. The Butcher beats on them EVEN WORSE! The Blade also beats the fudge out of them. Soooooo PUT THE TRIOS TITLES ON THEM! Emi Sakura and Hikaru Shida is STIFF! SWEET Backdrop Driver on to the chair by Emi. NICE Tiger Driver by Emi! SWEET Moonsault by Emi! FOR TWO! Hikaru Shida goes all Mardi Gras with her top, challenging Emi to chop her! This match is fucking awesome- an ELEVATION CLASSIC! Meteora for TWO. Nearfalls galore! Spinning crescent spinning kick for the WIN! This is fucking great. That was fucking great.

  11. I had a dream once that I was tagging with Hogan against the Road Warriors. I had to eat the pin and didn’t want to take the Doomsday Device. I told Animal and he said Hawk would be pissed, I then spent the rest of the dream running down a corridor away from Hawk and Animal who were trying to kill me. If only Hogan and politicked a victory. Stupid dreams.

  12. I'm in a bizarro universe where I don't have cable or dish, so I don't see Dynamite/Rampage and I only see Dark/Elevation. So the first Dynamite I ever saw was the one I attended in Cleveland. So I used to see Thunder Rosa, Britt Baker, Gunn Club and The Acclaimed, but they disappeared for me when they "graduated" to the TV shows. I'll be retiring in 24 years.

  13. Ryuji Yamakawa vs Tomoaki Honma from Big Japan, 2nd January 2000. As someone who is mostly familiar with Honma from New Japan (honestly, post neck injury Honma at that too), seeing that athleticism from him means I will probably never forget this absolutely silly but fun spot

  14. AEW is definitely more for me than for you at the moment. I'm perfectly fine with interesting characters having good matches. Not even particularly the "five star epic" matches. And not the go-go-go athletic spectacles or the plunder matches - which are less my bag, personally. I'm just straight up delighted to get stuff like Dustin vs Claudio, Emi & Maki vs Shida & Skye, and Lethal vs Dax week in and week out. There was a seven-week period around Forbidden Door, when I was marking out like a madman every single show. That's enough for me. I don't ask for more. The good matches and fun characters are my personal steak, my personal cake, and the belts and storylines and build and so on are - to me - part of the sizzle and the icing. But. I think I hear you. It's not unreasonable for the build and story to be somebody's steak and cake. So, w/r/t All Out 2022 in particular: I think it's reasonable to say that about half of the announced matches have some long-term build and story behind them. Is that enough? Jungle Boy vs Christian being the big one. Teacher vs Student, Mentor vs Mentee, with a story that's been simmering for ages. Hobbs vs Starks. Classic partner break-up.story. Bad guys in this case, with the manner of break-up garnering sympathy for the smaller partner. Two classic stories. Athena vs Jade has the whole "baddies" story behind it. It is likely they were heading for Stat vs Jade but injuries forced a change of plans. I'd argue they've done a fine job in pivoting to Athena here. But then again, the stories aren't my main bag and I just want to see these two wrestlers fight. Is there enough here for you to hang your hat on? Speaking of injuries changing plans: Interim titles are just fine by me. AEW had to pivot here, but I think there is plenty of story to go around between DMD, Hayter, Storm, and Shida. It doesn't take any imagination to get to "why are they fighting" and eventually "why are these story beats happening in this match?" The groundwork has been done to make for a compelling match beyond just the ring work. I figure they are going to tell quite a story in there. There's arguably some story behind Mox vs Lethal, but MCMG coming in is pretty much pure "lets watch good fighters fight." Danielson has a story, which is he wants to fight everyone. Good enough for me, probably not for you. Sports Entertainment vs Pro Wrestling works as background, but I'll give the "not enough build" crowd this one. Swerve in our Glory and The Acclaimed are all interesting characters but this particular title fight doesn't have much build. If, as seems likely, we get Dark Order with Hangman vs Kenny and the Bucks as the trios final, there is an absolute ton of story and background there. There has been a fair bit of build toward House of Black vs Miro, Darby, and Sting. We might get that on PPV. And if we do, people will definitely complain about having three trios matches on one show. I will not be among those people. Give me more trios matches! Casino Ladder Match is more about the spectacle. It has a built-in answer to "why are these people fighting?" but I don't think that's what you are talking about, S w/o S. Big thing is the title match. We'll likely find out on Wednesday (Thursday for me) whether it's all story (Mox vs Punk) or just "Let's let two great fighters fight" (Mox vs, for example, Ospreay or someone like that) or ??? (Mox joins the Casino Battle Royal, and/or the winner gets a same-day shot at the title. But, yeah, about half the matches have some compelling backstory in my opinion. I legitimately planned to say, "Ideally, of course, every match would be built to like at WrestleMania III." But then I looked at the WMIII Wikipedia page. I mean, obviously Hogan vs Andre, Savage vs Steamboat, Piper vs Adonis, and Harts & Danny Davis vs Bulldogs and Tito all had memorable backstories. And Race vs JYD had the loser must bow stip. But even that show had some matches that were "just" matches. Anyway, I am looking forward to learning what the title match will be. And the trios final. And if both of them have backstory, I will be happy. Icing is good. Sizzle is nice. And for some folks, that's the cake. That's the steak. Which makes me more interested in what happens next, looking at it that way. EDIT: w/r/t Dragon vs Wizard, if we count what happened years ago on the other channel, there is a ton of backstory there as well.

  15. - As awesome as Dante is a a high-flyer, I like this more strike-oriented offense and new finisher. He deserves a bigger push but not sure how given the current roster and belt situation. - Julia’s finisher looked nasty last week. This week was more of a gentle stretch you would do for a friend. She is working the gimmick hard, I’ll give her that. - Marina almost killed Skye Blue twice, but she also made Aminata’s offense look great so it’s a wash this week. Not sure why you have Skye, who should be getting some kind of push one of these days, eating the pin. I think Skye is better than Anna JAS and/or Hart, but I suppose the enhancement talent needs to be good to make the stars look good. - I realize I didn’t really miss Matt Hardy. Weird match, although RSP basically running a Hardy tribute match was clever. Private Party needs a refresh or an excursion or ROH to start, they’ve been stuck in purgatory for the entire year I’ve been watching. - Serena Deeb is another who could really use ROH become a full-time thing. Having her work Dark/Elevation is good for the younger talent, and at least Arquette got some token offense. - You guessed it, Frankie Kazarian is back to wrestle a very proficient, perfectly fine match. He and Dante should have a program (and train together), and Dante should steal that springboard leg drop. - Rush, Butcher, and Blade is a pretty fun concept. Violence ensues. Dante should study and work a program with Rush, teach young Dante some dickish athletic moves. - Excited for the main. If Akki isn’t going to hold our YouTube queen’s train then why is he there. Ohhh, “Regina di Wave” as in queen of Wave, not someone named Regina D. Wade. They maybe need to not focus on Shida’s corner punches. EMI~! hits a moonsault!!! Holy shit! Shida auditions for BCC! Kind of nice to see them have one of those 6 minutes sprints that packs in 12 minutes of action, but 15 minutes packed into 10-12 would have been better. Crowd did get into the hot finish.

  18. And while having the rotating crews and the loosey-goosey announcing teams can be fun, a lot of what you're talking about does get lost when the announcers are more focused on making jokes or singing. Having Tony Schiavone doing some in-ring interviews on Dark/DE has helped. Side note: I was so bummed that Emi wasn't at the Austin show in March.

  19. Oh, I'm retired so I got nothing but time to watch all the wrestling on earth. If you have limited access to wrestling, I can understand wanting more of a set-up for what you are watching. We are averaging 26 good straight up in the ring good wrestling matches on free TV a week currently. The best match last week was Kevin Owens showing up and having a Steiner vs Sasaki remake on RAW. I could see someone not liking it because there was no build up. I don't care about that because I am trying to get in as much in ring wrestling as I can process. If there was a big build up to it, I would have fast forwarded over it to get to the match. Yeah, I don;t really give a shit about setting up most wrestling but I'm trying to watch 20 hours of wrestling a week and I don't have time for 20 minutes of Edge talking me into the building to see him take out Finn Balor. I just want to see the match. AEW and WWE and IMPACT- and to a lesser extent NWA and MLW- have so many people who can flat out go in the ring, that you can throw two people or two tagteams in the ring it will be a four star match. THAT'S WHAT I'm HERE FOR! WORKRATE, DADDY!

  20. Nope. I choose my words carefully. In my opinion, protégé has an entirely too positive nuance. The somewhat unwieldy "mentee" seems more suitable in describing Jungle Boy's relationship to Christian. Since you seem to prefer terms borrowed from the French, in my opinion in this case "mentee" is le mot juste. ? Like it or not, mentee is an American English word. No less an authority than the Columbia Journalism Review has my back on that point. The English language, much like pro wrestling, is always growing and changing. It's good to keep a flexible mind about those things,I believe.

  33. I enjoyed Jungle Boy's indy stuff and he's had a great connection with the audience, but he's really plateaued in the ring. His promo skills almost seem to be getting worse the bigger his role gets. He's a great case for someone who would probably do well in ROH when and if they get it doing its own thing again. Send him there to see if he can learn how to talk, or at least figure out a niche for himself. Sammy is a weird case because he had that natural face charisma that comes with being a high flying underdog but quickly started to develop that obnoxious young prick personality. His face/heel booking being all over the place didn't really help either. They just need to figure out what direction they're going with him and stick with it for a while, then book him in programs with people he's going to get booed against accordingly.

  35. Well. This is awesome. I get the best of pro wrestling hate from Smelly, and the best of pro wrestling love from Porky. So great. First, the hatred: If I remember correctly, the Parking Lot Brawl was the end of the oh-so-great Regal vs Finlay feud. I was in Europe at the time and didn't get to watch it until years later when I got the unofficial DVD set - which was one of the greatest things ever! This match is amazing. More awesomeness in seven minutes than in many a three-hour wrestling show. Think of how influential it is! Doing something like this live (as opposed to Piper vs Golddust which, while also pretty awesome, was "cinematic" in terms of being pre-taped and edited together). This match obviously influenced Besties vs Santana and Ortiz, and the whole Zona 23 aesthetic... But also maybe the bumper coming off that pickup truck influenced Shad Khan's entire business model, leading to his son being able to create AEW! The window-smashing and pile-driving are awesome, obviously. The whole way they use this unique environment is just great. And it builds to a satisfying finish, rather than just being a violent clusterfuck, which is pretty amazing. But really, in 1996 how many American and Canadian wrestling fans had ever seen a feud as hate-filled and violent as Regal vs Finlay? Even years later that DVD set held up beautifully. This match might be the biggest highlight. Which is really saying something. And here the other side of the coin. Eddie Guerrero showing his love for pro wrestling by working in smaller promotions and putting people over. Another of the Greatest Things that pro wrestling history is so rich with. I had read about the tournament, but this is the first match I have seen from it. It starts out with pure "scientific, technical" pro wrestling. Then it gets a bit heated as they go on. You can kind of tell they don't have experience working together. Frankly, there are a couple of rough moments. But that kind of makes it better. They are chaining complex holds and reversals together at a very high level of difficulty. The rough spots make it easy to believe they are "doing the dance" in there. Oh boy did I enjoy these two matches. Two total extremes, very different kinds of fights that both, succinctly, capture the greatness of pro wrestling! Thanks, lads! And thanks, Matt, for putting this together!

  38. I was pretty out of the loop on wrestling around this time but I remember watching this match and when I got the newest WWE 2K game I used Neville to win all the belts. Why did he never get a main event push in WWE? I would have assumed it was due to his size but he's just as big as Rollins was stature-wise. Out of all the "new" guys around that time (new to me at least) I thought Neville, Rusev, and Cesaro were the absolute coolest, and Ambrose was the best out of Shield. Sad they never got their due in WWE but I'm glad I get to see them get a little more respect nowadays.

  39. Just my take on it, but I think it has less to do with the product / lack of a main event / cooling off than it does with them just absolutely burning the Chicago market to the ground. They had what 16k for a PPV there just 2 months ago? Now they are running 3 live events in a week there? Plus they've had at least one other live TV there this year. It's too much in too short of a period. The PPVs always deliver, but who knows what you're getting for a live Rampage ya know. 4 events in 2 months all with very high ticket prices, Forbidden Door especially, is just a bad call. I get the desire to have destination PPVs that are in the same city annually. But Forbidden Door being in The United Center should have caused a pivot. They should have went with Toronto for this weekend.

  41. Personally, I don’t think things in AEW are as dire as some folks here make them out to be. I do, however, think things have gone down some as far as the booking. We’re still getting amazing matches week in and week out, but the stories aren’t there like they used to be. That said, I think TK’s true test as to whether or not he’s a great booker will be how he handles the next few months.

  43. it was really cool. i've seen a fair amount of rap shows before. Warren G opened. it was solid and i enjoyed it, but nothing to really write home about. Ice Cube rocked. he interacted with the crowd well. told quick stories (sorta like skits i guess?) to set up his next song. WC was his backup/hypeman, so i was hoping for a Westside Connection song, but alas he didn't play one. Played a good mix of stuff, early solo, recent stuff, collabs, NWA. Ice Cube is awesome. much respect. Snoop came out and the crowd went insane. [side note, the people in front of me were talking to venue security (i guess it was a friend of theirs or something) and he was saying that they were explicitly told by management not to call out people for smoking, because it was an unwinnable fight. i've seen some shows at this venue where the security were big dicks about smoking, so this was funny to hear.] Snoop rapped everything. he didn't do what so many performers do, with starting to sing a line and then holding out the mic for the crowd to sing. He just kept going, and he was clear and sounded good the whole time. the set was like an hour or more and he was moving around a lot, and never seemed to run out of breath. That might be what impressed me the most. His stage set was pretty simple but had a few ladies pole dancing for almost the entirety. his set list was really interesting, as he didn't generally perform entire songs, but would do his verse, or the main verse of a song, and of course the chorus, and kinda just kept going to the next song. i haven't seen a performer pull off a set like this, but it worked really well here. Maybe because so much of his music is based around features? Snoop's set was absolutely amazing and the entire crowd ate up everything he was doing. edit: while i'm at it, may as well talk about the Zombies show. it was fun. like i mentioned in the original post, the venue is so cool. seeing a legitimate Hall of Fame band play there (they usually get up-and-coming or indie bands mainly) really felt special. They sounded good, played tight, and the lead singer/songwriter told some really fun and interesting stories in between songs. It was super hot that day and i got overheated so stayed out of the barn for most of the set.
