GetAClue Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Time is running out on the rights deal for AEW. Will WBD renew it? What will become of AEW Television in reality?

Zakk_Sabbath Posted May 14 Posted May 14 (edited) https://m.basketnews.com/news-206165-tnt-lose-nba-media-rights-to-nbc-report-states.html Two ways to think about this one, I guess: it either frees up a lot of "cap space" for AEW, or Turner is getting out of sports entirely (Unrelated, but as upset as I am at losing the NBA on TNT crew, at least 'Roundball Rock' will likely be back in our lives for the first time since the Elite returned from suspension) Edit: a more AEW-Centric update from PWInsider: AEW-WBD UPFRONT NOTES, NEW JIM ROSS BOOK, WILLOW AND MORE Warner Bros. Discovery will be holding their upfronts presentation tomorrow in New York City. We are hearing that AEW will be mentioned as part of the presentation, which will be held at The Theater in Madison Square Garden. So no one gets ahead of themselves this year, we do not believe that the two sides have locked in a new media rights deal and do not expect there will be any sort of announcement in that regard tomorrow. So, if you are hyping yourself up for that, you should stop. No update on Eddie Kingston yet. The fear is he injured his leg or foot working for New Japan over the weekend. The AEW Figure Fighters Mobile Game will officially launch tomorrow. Jim Ross will be narrating the audiobook of his latest memoir, Business Is About to Pick Up!: 50 Years of Wrestling in 50 Unforgettable Calls. Casey Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Turner isn’t getting out of the sports business for awhile. I’m pretty sure they’re locked in with the NHL and MLB until 2028 and beyond for both. They might go after the WNBA, too. And just because they’re losing the NBA doesn’t automatically mean they’re going to loosen the purse strings and give a lot of that money to AEW. 3

A couple years ago, you would have sworn they were just going to be around forever. Now, it's over in 1 or 2 years. That's crazy. Then again, the regime before this current one dumped HBO Boxing after nearly 45 years. So nothing is safe, I guess.

Then again, the regime before this current one dumped HBO Boxing after nearly 45 years. So nothing is safe, I guess. Probably not as much as we think. The NBA has wanted full control of NBA League Pass (the current model is a joint venture between the NBA and Turner Sports, same with NBA TV) for a while, and it wouldn't surprise me if there's very little interest from WBD on maintaining a venture with the NBA that doesn't also include NBA League Pass and NBA TV. It wouldn't surprise me if Disney or NBC Universal are willing to make some pretty huge offers to bring League Pass/NBA TV under the ESPN+ or Peacock banners respectively, and that's what will cut WBD out. Disney already did this with NHL.tv so it wouldn't be entirely out of the question. Edited May 14 by Stefanie Sparkleface 3
Technico Support Posted May 14 Posted May 14 (edited) If they renew the NBA, they won't have enough money left for a good deal for AEW If they don't renew the NBA, it means they're eventually giving up on sports and they won't care enough to give AEW a good renewal deal Shrodinger's shitty contract negotiation Edited May 15 by Technico Support 1 2
EVA Posted May 14 Posted May 14 (edited) WBD has never included AEW as part of their sports package. Always talked about it in terms of their entertainment programming. I don’t think WBD is intentionally getting out of sports (though Zaslav’s tightwad tendencies might get them out of sports anyway), but even if they do, I don’t think that includes AEW. Cobra Commander Posted May 14 Posted May 14 I don't really trust WBD enough to just assume the best here, and the TV Deal is sort of the elephant in the room I guess it's a good sign that people are keeping their mouths shut about what is/isn't happening 1
Phantom Lord Posted May 14 Posted May 14 I can't see WBD letting go of AEW. I mean what are they going to put in those times slots? Run The Meg another couple of times a week? Seriously though, AEW does pretty well for them and I can't see WBD letting them go unless Tony does something stupid and over values their worth or something. 2 1
Cobra Commander Posted May 14 Posted May 14 all the first run programming on Cable probably doesn't mind that we don't get to see the ratings numbers for rerun programming

I believe Meltzer was speculating on Twitter (in response to a question) that losing the NBA frees up a weeknight for Collision on TNT, instead of Saturday nights. Running Tuesday-Wednesday, or Wednesday-Thursday would also cut down on expenses. WBD could move Collision to Fridays to go against Smackdown on USA. 1
