Realized we never created one of these for this year.   Anyway....  the industry continues on it's glide path for re-inventing cable TV:

CBS and NBC are merging to co-own Star Trek? Fine. Just remaster Deep Space 9 in HD and I'll be happy.

Fuck this isn't even re-inventing cable. It's literally the original version of Hulu.

HBO is delaying the release of Last Week Tonight clips on Youtube until now Thursday after the show airs

The news was broken by John Oliver who apologized for not being able to share the show clip on Monday like he normally does

The goal is to drive people to sign up for MAX

Quote

An HBO rep confirmed that going forward, clips from “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” will not be shared on YouTube until four days after the premiere on HBO and Max.

“When ‘Last Week Tonight With John Oliver’ premiered on HBO, the convenience of watching on Max did not exist so YouTube allowed flexible viewing for the main story as well as promotional exposure,” the HBO spokesperson said in a statement emailed to Variety. “We are now delaying that availability and hope those fans choose to watch the entire show on Max.”

Walmart is buying Vizio

Obviously Walmart was already a big seller of Vizio TVs but they are making this move to improve their ad game

Quote

Walmart and its Sam’s Club warehouse chain have long been major sellers of Vizio devices. But in buying the company, Walmart touted the potential to boost its ad business through Vizio’s SmartCast Operating System, which allows users to stream free ad-supported content on their TVs.

As it pushes for higher profits, the retail titan has tried to expand its media business Walmart Connect, which comes with bigger profit margins than selling groceries or clothing. The segment’s advertising sales grew 22% in the fourth quarter.

“We believe VIZIO’s customer-centric operating system provides great viewing experiences at attractive price points. We also believe it enables a profitable advertising business that is rapidly scaling,” said Seth Dallaire, executive vice president and chief revenue officer of Walmart U.S., in a statement.

The move comes as Walmart tries to compete with Amazon’s growing ad segment.

Walmart’s control of the Vizio platform will give companies that advertise with the retailer a greater reach. In a news release, Walmart said Vizio’s SmartCast system has 18 million active accounts.

The retailer also said it could offer “innovative television and in-home entertainment and media experiences” after it acquires the TV maker.

Sony will take over the manufacturing, distribution, and marketing of Disney physical media (DVDs, Blu-ray discs, etc...) (this is just for US and Canada)

Disney will still own and control the digital rights

Tangentially - the Disney Movie Club will be shutting down. May 20 is the last day to place orders. July 20 is when the service will be shut down

Hoping it allows Sony to release stuff from the "vault".

Some intern is going to misspell "Sony" into the wrong computer and "Song of the South" is going to finally get its re-release.

About ten years ago I worked a job where one part was delivering Vizio TVs that were replacements for models that had come defective from the factory.  It seems that they've definitely improved their QC.

Per the New York Times and Bloomberg - Sony is considering making an offer to buy Paramount

Skydance Media already has an offer out to buy Paramount but apparently that was met with a "lukewarm" reception

So they'll merge it with their streaming platform that I didn't even know existed until I got a PS5?

I think I'm now on the other side of fuck David Zaslav and now I'm like "fuck it bro if they're going to keep giving you money - go get it. Just leave TCM alone and we're cool."

The only reason they had to go from a company that makes and distributes movies, to a company that deletes movies for the tax write off, is the Fantastic Beasts franchise died on it's arse. JK Rowling's lack of talent killed the company. She's the Vince Russo of Warner Bros.
