John from Cincinnati Posted September 3, 2021 Posted September 3, 2021 I know I’m getting my hopes up for no reason, but I’d really like to see Darby take the Plunge. 4 1

The Natural Posted September 4, 2021 Posted September 4, 2021 (edited) I'd go with CM Punk/Darby Allin as the headliner. Usually the world title match should go on last but Punk/Darby is the biggest match. It's Punk's first match in seven years and taking place in Chicago. Edited September 4, 2021 by The Natural 3

Kenny's probably going over, there's a possibility of a Hangman Page comeback pop but nothing's going to come close to the biggest single thing you can do in wrestling right now. The X factor would be that Punk's untested in the ring and might not be able to go at a main event pace. But if they don't go on last, I'd guess it's because Punk personally requested not to. This is a card with a ton of high points and I'd like to see QT/Show or maybe even Mox/Kojima slotted in as a cooldown or a sprint, respectively. Completely possible that MJF/Jericho sucks the air out of the crowd, I hope none of those three matches go back-to-back, and I do like the idea of Mox/Kojima as the opener. 2

He may therefore want to lean more on the theatrical wrestling rather than shoot-fight MMA work, but hey, stranger things have definitely happened. Darby can't go over unless they plan on turning Punk heel, or someone screws Punk (in which case it does little for Darby). Does a heel Sting move work? Probably not .. unless there's some 'innocent' mix up here and it simply sows the seeds for Darby/Sting future dissension. Tough one to call. Edited September 4, 2021 by A_K 1
Beech27 Posted September 4, 2021 Posted September 4, 2021 There’s a path to move forward from brutal MMA losses while still incorporating elements of that in your pro wrestling, and if AEW thinks most of its fans know their Nagata, Takara, Shibata, et al., maybe that’s a needle they/Punk could try to thread. But I don’t think they will, or should.
Teflon Turtle Posted September 4, 2021 Posted September 4, 2021 My vote on the "Punk's wrestling will have more MMA influence" issue is that he should keep it as subtle/minimal as possible. The fans buying tickets to see him now are not doing so to see U-Style Punk. My hopes would be that the kicks he used before look a bit more crisp, maybe throw in an armbar or two. Keep it simple, not pervasive. Just use it to clean some stuff up vs. changing his entire game. About the Nagata example... I'm not terribly familiar with his body of work that immediately followed his MMA losses, but by and large, wasn't he simply permitted to go back to being a pro wrestler and get over again on his successes there versus continuing to press on with anything MMA-centric? (By this, I mean he didn't drastically change his moveset, didn't insist on wearing MMA gloves to the ring...Anybody can see he kicks hard in there, but he wasn't like Shibata who was practically going "I will hit harder than these wimpy wrestlers because I am a REAL FIGHTER WHO FIGHTS FOR REAL")
Jiji Posted September 4, 2021 Posted September 4, 2021 Nagata started calling opponents betas, soy boys, and other insults of that ilk. It was kind of strange.

AxB Posted September 4, 2021 Posted September 4, 2021 Thunder Rosa incorporates MMA moves into her Wrestling, despite being 0-1 in MMA.
Craig H Posted September 4, 2021 Posted September 4, 2021 Heads up everyone, you can now order off Fite in the US. No need for a vpn unless you want to buy it for $40 instead of $50. I just ordered it on Fite because my past experience with BR Live sucked. 1
Matt D Posted September 4, 2021 Posted September 4, 2021 (edited) He spent years of his life training, “fighting,” and announcing. It’s a big part of who he is now. He and Danielson worked spots from recent fights into their WWE title matches as @DreamBrokenreminded us above. I think he should go the other way and be as pro wrestling and over the top as possible but it’s wild to think he’s not going to lean into the MMA stuff instead. Edited September 4, 2021 by Matt D 1

Curt McGirt Posted September 4, 2021 Posted September 4, 2021 In the chat we talked about it and it's clear he'll try to use the rear naked choke from the match tonight, and since he's not stuck in Vince Land he can use the Pepsi Plunge (and the piledriver, hahaha) and whatever indie shit he used to do again.
DreamBroken Posted September 4, 2021 Posted September 4, 2021 With the Skye Blue addition, I guess that means they are going over the traditional 21 number of participants for the Casino battle royals

I was gonna use the VPN to order that way but am glad that it's not necessary.
The Natural Posted September 4, 2021 Posted September 4, 2021 Predictions: Kenny Omega retains the AEW World Championship. Dr. Britt Baker defends the AEW Women's Championship. Miro defends the TNT Championship. This was the toughest match to call as I can see Eddie Kingston winning as well. Lucha Bros become the new AEW World Tag Team Champions. Ruby Soho or Thunder Rosa win the Casino Battle Royale. I'll go with Soho. Wouldn't be surprised if Tay Conti wins either. Chris Jericho. This was also a tough match to predict. CM Punk beats Darby Allin in Punk's first match back in 7 years. Paul Wight. Jon Moxley. Orange Cassidy/Chuck Taylor /Wheeler Yuta /Jurassic Express. 1
John from Cincinnati Posted September 4, 2021 Posted September 4, 2021 The Punk/JR stuff on the countdown was good. Punk seemed genuinely choked up talking about Eddie Guerrero. Weird to think people were questioning this guy's passion a few weeks ago. And, a high tide lifting all ships, I can see the positive influence he's having on Jim Ross. 4

Well, we know that PAC is constantly pouting and frowning. Those are probably that miserable bastard's only two expressions. And yeah, please no GIFs or pics of a smiling PAC to counter this reply, I'm sure these exist because he saw an old lady slipping and falling or something. 1 7

AxB Posted September 4, 2021 Posted September 4, 2021 It cost me £15.15. Which was $19.99 converted to GBP. 1
