The Washington Commanders Can Fuck Right Off

The link doesn't really do justice to what the story is about which is how Jon Gruden's emails took down Snyder

Quote

On Monday, Oct. 11, The New York Times published a story revealing new emails in which Gruden wrote that Goodell was "clueless" and "anti-football" and described him in anti-gay and misogynistic terms. That evening, Gruden resigned, pushed by Davis. Gruden would soon file a lawsuit against the NFL and Goodell that accused the commissioner of "directly leaking" his emails to harm his reputation and force him out, something league officials have repeatedly denied.

What angered Davis more than anything, he later said, was being surprised by the emails months after Goodell, Pash and other owners, including Snyder, knew about them. It seemed to Davis as if he and the Raiders were collateral damage in what he saw as Goodell's yearslong effort to protect Dan Snyder, of all owners, at all costs.

"F--- the NFL," Davis later told Gruden. "And f--- Dan Snyder."

Oh BTW

Quote

When Snyder's lawyers -- famed defense attorney Joe Tacopina, assisted by Reed Smith partners Siev and James McCarroll -- began to show a series of slides, those in the room were stunned, according to sources. What was presented was not a defense against any of Wilkinson's findings made against Snyder; it was a series of screenshots of potentially embarrassing emails and texts from several top league executives, including Goodell's top lieutenant, Pash. The rationale, according to a source with firsthand knowledge, was to argue the hypocrisy of league officials judging Snyder. The tactics were so ruthless that some attorneys felt uncomfortable. Although none of the content was sexist, anti-gay or graphic, the signal was clear: If Goodell didn't do what Snyder wanted in terms of handling the Wilkinson report and punishment, these emails and texts would be leaked.

It became known in league circles as the "Blackmail PowerPoint."

Making lawyers uncomfortable with how low you will go is impressive.

Making big time "we work for billionaires" corporate lawyers uncomfortable with how low you will go is down right staggering.

From all accounts of hearing from this,  really Roger Goddell is the one who should be terrified of this "Blackmail Power Point" .  It should how easily manipulated he really was.   I mean we pretty much knew that but this is concrete evidence.

Gruden is a piece of shit, but I hope he takes the shield and Goodell to the fucking cleaners, and especially makes it to discovery.

Allegedly Gruden doesn't give a fuck about money and doesn't want a settlement, just wants discovery and Goodell and Snyder testifying under oath.

Of course, if the NFL loses it appeal to force this into their arbitration system, they'll probably try to find a price high enough that money will suddenly matter to Gruden.

So the owners will approve Josh Harris some time this afternoon

And in the most NFL move ever - Attorney Mary Jo White just happens to be there to brief the owners on all her findings about Dan Snyder

Thank you for playing, Mr. Snyder. Enjoy these lovely parting gifts.

Wait, how do they fine him if he's no longer part of the NFL?

Also, I doubt losing one percent of the money he's getting really hurts that dickweed at all.

I guess it would be the equivalent of your boss asking you to finish a major project and then firing you 10 mins after you sent it.  The firing was probably decided weeks ago but doesnt stop them from getting shit done for you

It seems very much like the fine needed to be paid before they would approve the sale

But all involved - Snyder and the NFL - are pieces of shit

The new ownership group sure seems to be hinting that they indeed will be changing the team name (probably at the end of season)

The various folks have been asked directly about it and none of them have ruled it out

Now of course - local folks are then jumping 10 steps to far in thinking that because everyone likes Josh Harris, the NFL will let him bring back the Redskins name (the thought process being he would be able to work out some sort of permission deal with.... someone... to use the name. Like Florida State does with the Seminole tribe)

But... But... Seminoles and Chippewas are actual real native American tribes that have given Florida State and Central Michigan their blessing. They aren't racial slurs nor generic terms. Who the hell would even be in the position to give permission?

Anyway, Guardians is a terrible name and I don't blame them if they do want to change it, but there's no chance in hell they go back to the old name. The NFL would never allow it after finally getting it changed, sponsors would again start to flee, etc.

But the main reason people want to change the name besides it stinks of Richie Rich.  What makes that different from "Washington Football Team" ?   Did Goddell give them the name?

If by some luck the Commanders make it to division playoffs, are we really going to believe that fans will be "it doesn't count because it is Dan's name"?   Just dumb

you know, if they'd changed the name back in the 70s/80s when all the universities were, they could've squatted on something actually cool.

they could've been the Panthers.  Carolina didn't come into the league until 95.  Or poached "Bullets" when the basketball team abandoned it.  Or even "Senators" before baseball came back to DC.

Renaming themselves some variant of "Hogs" during the golden age of the Jim Lachey/Joe Jacoby Hogs would've been rad as hell.

In that respect they kinda deserve to be stuck with something as rank with the stench of being vomited up from a focus group like "Commanders"

The genericness of "Football Team" at least makes them stand out as unique in [American] football.  It runs contrary to the direction every other team rebranding goes. Makes 'em sound different.  Old, like a team that's been around for a century.  Which they are.  Lets them lean into that European soccer club territory.  Washington Football Team, Washington Football Club, even has a kinda cool abbreviation if they went with DC FC or FC DC or something like that.
