Yeah, that's one thing I don't care for, with the punch and kick being on different buttons. After all of these years, the perfect control system is light and strong strikes on separate buttons, light and strong grapples on separate buttons. In the one match I played I don't even think I used the kick button all that much. Or, stick with just one button for strikes, but use the stick direction to modify the type of strike that's thrown and light press is for light strikes and long press is for strong strikes. That's 10 different strikes you can assign to a wrestler right there.

The way No Mercy and their ilk did it, if I recall correctly (and it's been a few years so don't hold me to it) was that close strikes were punches, further away were kicks, tap for light, hold for strong, and direction modifies so you have different strikes. So up/down/left/right and no direction are five strikes each, and depending on your distance or if you tapped or held then you'd have up to 20.

So similar to what you're saying but distance caused a difference in what strike came out.

But that could be my memory clouding things again. Either way, I'd prefer that to a two button system for sure.

No clue why I’m enjoying ranked mode as much as I am, but it’s really fun. Everyone I’ve played so far wants to win, obviously, but they’re trying to have a fun and competitive match too. Except for one guy who had a CAW that looked like Bubba Dudley fucked Bubba Sparxx and he was glitching all over the place. I attacked him after the match after I made him submit.

I don’t mind RTE. It’s basic, but I’ll finish this mode several times most likely, whereas MyRise in the WWE games… never finished a single one. They’re way too long.

Ugly. LOL.

Could someone play as Penta and let me know how satisfying it is to taunt as him?

His mini-game is some straight up bullshit. I don’t see myself ever doing any of them again. Nice that they’re there I guess, and the in-game reasoning is a nice touch (it’s a BTE thing) but yeahhhh.

Penta also turned on me (Punk) in Road to Elite, then all three of Death Triangle kicked my ass at Full Gear. So I had to call in reinforcements (Danielson). But Nick Jackson says Bryan isn’t trustworthy, hmmmm.

Unless I am dumb and didn't see it, I'm not overly amused about the lack of tournament mode. I wouldn't think it would add a lot to coding, but that is how my brother and I have co-oped wrestling games forever. Set up a tag team tournament, tornado tag, and we can just play as different teams and have fun along the way without having to constantly jump out to the main screen again. Didn't see a way to even do tornado tags. Also no GM/Universe style mode. It feels very barebones mode-wise, I told my brother we should just hold off on playing it together until we see if they add any extra modes/features.

The gameplay is fun, no real complaints there, just wish there were more game mode options.

Pre-ordered. Gotta wait still I think. 😩

If you’re on PSN hit me up!

I also found an Ibushi CAW that was ridiculously easy to make. 98% spot on. I’m sure in the coming days/weeks/months, people will start to post movesets too. I don’t even know if the Kamigoye is in the game, it’d take me like 20 minutes to scroll through all the moves.

Certain things in the career mode trigger video packages too. I got one about Punk’s debut on Rampage, and the formation of Death Triangle. Very much geared towards catching “casuals” up on the lore and history of AEW, and it’s a nice trip down memory lane for longtime fans.

Do wrestlers have alternate attires?

Britt & the Bucks have buyable alt outfits. I think Cody’s outfit is for cutscenes. Broken Matt is an alt outfit that you have to set up as a preset (same for the others I mentioned, they don’t just appear on the menu when you unlock them). Some people like OC and Jericho have gold outfits for some reason.

I’ve seen clips with Omega in different gear, not sure how that’s a thing quite yet.

Sadly the modify wrestler mode only lets you add either a generic ass tshirt, or a city themed shirt, to a wrestler. No changing colors of existing gear or anything, which is pretty terrible. That same mode lets you change their moveset and entrance though, so it’s either an oversight or a really weird choice.

I think the CAW mode and no modifications to existing gear is my biggest gripe with the game honestly. RTE mode is whatever, it’s basically No Mercy so I’m fine I guess. But the two things I mentioned are pretty unforgivable in 2023. I don’t need face morphing, but I need more than 4 face models for sure.

Terrible there's little changes available to existing gear. You can't go to town making updated outfits.

One thing thats really irking me right now is that every time you hit your signature move and then taunt to go special, your opponent immediately starts standing up. That makes it really difficult to get guys in the right position for finishers that aren’t just front grapple. I guess that’s designed to give human opponents a chance to save themselves, but it’s anti-fun against the CPU.

Overall, I’m enjoying it so far. The exploding bar wire match is good fun…and the ladder match is actually pretty great? I had an absolutely gonzo 7-star match the first time I tried one as Fenix vs. Sammy.

But I did a “group suit” casino battle royal, and that kinda sucked. The team aspect of it is very weird, and the actual battle royal mechanics aren’t very fun.

I remapped my controls to something that felt a little more natural to me and I'm having a better time. Still haven't messed with any of the other modes outside of exhibition and won't really have time for that until next week, but I'm still thinking it is a nice game to pick up and play for 30 minutes or so to knock out a few matches, which is a pretty nice feeling.

The IGN review (6/10) is really disappointing as it was clearly written by someone that doesn’t “get” the intention of the AKI nostalgia. I’m assuming they didn’t play the originals.

”it’s disappointing that you can’t visually see where you stand on damage”? GTF out of here.

Watched a stream from NLegacyInc on the game and I do like that the Explosions in the NRBW match does actually look like seriously explosion and not the version that I saw in the preview that basically looked like the actual match.  Unless they have it set up so randomly the explosions will be awful.   Although the wrestlers almost immediately no sold it.  So it does have the realism of AEW 😁

The trivia part of the mini games was a lot harder than I expected although if you play it enough it does repeat.   The blood is every bit as bad (or great depending on likes) as the previews.  The thumbtacks spots are almost disturbing

The game also doesn’t do a great job of explaining how to do very basic actions. I lost the first match I played because I kept hitting the OWA too close to the ropes and couldn’t figure out how to drag Punk to the middle of the ring. The move list menu was no help.

I realized yesterday that I could cash in points that I earn for workouts on my insurance app for Nintendo gift cards, so I used them to grab Fight Forever.

Purchased the Elite version for the Switch and thought we'd be able to start playing immediately, but I guess it was a pre-order. Told little man that we'd have to wait until morning. So, of course, he's up at the crack of dawn ready to play, and I see it's not technically out unitl 9am EST. Oops. After much whining, he's on it now having a blast. First match he picked was CM Punk vs. Jade Cargill.

I'm looking forward to digging in on it this weekend. The gameplay is pretty simple, and that's a big plus for a video game idiot like me and for a six-year-old. He can actually win matches on easy, so that's more fun for everyone here.
