FOOTY - Spring 2016

German Cup Semis:

Bayern beats Werder Bremen at home, 2-0. Werder did a good job apparently (didn´t see this match unfortunately). Mueller scored twice with set pieces, the second goal by pen after Vidal dive.

Hertha BSC Berlin, as always, lost out on the chance of a home cup final, falling to Borussia Dortmund in a 0-3 defeat. Goals coming from Castro, Reus and Mhkithariyan. All of those goals were well worked, Castro´s even topped of with a beautiful finish.

This means the third Bayern vs Dortmund final in the last three years. One of each teams was part of the final since 2012. Additionally, it´s the fourth time each clubs meet in the final of the German cup. Out of the three finals played so far, Bayern won 2008 and 2014 (2-1; 2-0 both a.e.t.), Dortmund won 2012 in their double-season by 5-2. Adding to all this, the two clubs met in every cup competition since 2012. Since that year, both teams met in every competition. 2013 Dortmund got eliminated in a close 0-1 defeat in Munich, 2015 Bayern fell in a crazy penalty shootout where two penalties scored from Dortmund were enough to advance to the final. Those two are arguably the best clubs in Germany over the last 5 years, so it is a great finale with a big rivalry behind it. What more can you ask for?

20 years ago from yesterday Nicola Carricula wrote his name into Metro infamy when at our very first home game he knocked in an own goal in the dying seconds of the match to send us to defeat.

Frankfurt just beat Mainz 2-1 in their home game. This assures relegation for last place Hannover (22 points), who were practically done anyway. The amount of possible candidates to go down has been reduced to Augsburg on 36 points, Darmstadt (35), Hoffenheim (34), Stuttgart  (33), Bremen  (31) and Frankfurt  (30).

Others aren't quite safe yet, but those six seem most likely to battle it out for four safe spots since they are at best less than two wins ahead than 16th place with still three games left. 17th will go down and 16th will have to play 2. Bundesliga's third place in the playoff.

The matchday 32. will see an  unorthodox Monday evening game between Bremen and Stuttgart which is crucial for both teams. The game was moved for security measures. Matchday 34 will have Bremen vs. Stuttgart. Interesting stuff, everything could be pretty much settled next week or we could get an incredibly tense finish.

At the top it's Bayern (81 pts)....... Dortmund  (74).........................Leverkusen (54) ... the rest of the top seven  (48 - 45). Koeln and Ingolstadt are ahead of last year's second place Wolfsburg who continue their abysmal form. Not that I mind...

Call of the day must go to guy on 606 who thinks because Claudio and the Swansea manager are friends that they laid down and threw the game. You know, because they are friends and ITALIAN, where that sort of thing happens.

The Italian job if you will...

So...first non-Manchester, non-Chelsea and non-Arsenal team since Rovers in 95 or something like that?

Since 2013.

First time in decades that five different managers have won the league in five straight years. Mancini, Ferguson, Pellegrini, Mourinho, Ranieri (or Pochettino LOL).

Leicester vs Man U next weekend. Both teams have a left back with the same name as their teams nickname. Rojo (Red Devils) and Fuchs (Foxes).

Finally Justice for the 96. I hope this can give a sense of closure to those most affected by it. But the 96 won't be forgotten and neither will the circumstances for their deaths.

Atletico and Real with decent results, but such that won´t decide the semis.
I was only able to watch Atletico vs Bayern. The Spaniards came out swinging and the early goal was great, albeit Bayern´s defending was less than stellar. Second half was mostly Bayern,  up until Atletico almost scored from a great counter. Bayern had quite some trouble creating real chances, most of their scoring opportunities came from long range shots and cross-header plays. Guardiola has done a good job making Bayern great at the passing game, but ultimately, they have lots of trouble switching gears. The epitome of this is Xabi Alonso, who just seems brilliant...as long as there´s isn´t anyone putting him under pressure and stepping on his toes from time to time. The decision to bench Mueller and Ribery - assuming they were both fit to play - is questionable at least. Especially Mueller is a guy perfect to counteract the very physical playing style of Atletico. Bayern will need a change up to score next week, no matter how and what.

Guest Edwin

Surprised more people aren't talking about this:

You will not see a better goal than that this week.

Truly amazing.

Saúl has been a great replacement for Thiago since his leg injury earlier this season.

No Del Bosque leaves him and Koke out of the Spanish selection.
